How to tell when a gas mask or respirator filter is going to stop working/expire while in use.
If a filter stops working in use it could have very serious consequences for the wearer. There are two ways a filter can stop working while in use.
Firstly the particulate filter could become clogged with particles such as dust or sand or chemical powder, when this happens the wearer will find it hard to breathe through the filter due to the filter paper being clogged up.
Secondly the activated carbon layer could be saturated and not able to adsorb anymore chemical vapour, at this stage the wearer will begin to smell odours from outside the mask, the filter must be changed immediately as dangerous chemical vapours will now be getting past the filter.

Very informative video mate, you should be one of the best gasmask channels going soon I reckon, by the looks of it you'll have over 25,000+ subs by March 2018 if you keep going at this rate, Its been nice to see you and the channel grow like this, you deserve it with the work you put in, nice to know its paying off.

Cheers, yeah since leaving my job I find it really enjoyable to just make quite a few videos throughout the week and just do work around the house as well as volunteering etc. I wouldn't mind finding another job but I'm a bit picky as everywhere I've looked at seems to mess you about a bit, for example jobs advertised as part time but they expect you to be available 5 days a week. Some of my videos have been appearing on the RU-vid front page recently for recommended videos, which has given me a massive boost in views and subs, but that will probably die down within a week I should imagine. I'm doing extra videos on Saturday and Sunday now at 1PM, so I want to try and use those slots to do air rifle, crossbow videos again.

Would it be a good idea to put some kind of harmless scent, like a drop of banana oil (or maybe a longer-lasting essential oil), on a rain sock over the filter? That wouldn't put out enough vapor to shorten the filter's life much (in the scheme of things) and would give you immediate, guaranteed warning if the charcoal is getting used up instead of having to take a wild guess.

So the particulate filter just gets clogged? is it possible that things could venture through the particulate filter rather? I'm thinking about this in relevance to corona, should I simply swap the filter when it's clogged?

I know you get harrassed about asbestos questions.... but im a prepper, and in my plan, i have a 3 day walk out of danger zone...... do you think only 3 days of travel would make a big difference for my health? Or should i be able to live for awhile still afterwards?

As in you'd breathe through an asbestos filter for 3 days? It would do far less damage to you than inhaling irradiated particles etc.

Wouldn't it make much more sense to just go for asbestos free filters? I mean if you use it for prepping you would want filters that are in date so they will most likely protect your life and most filters that contain asbestos are much likely to be old thus propably expired and you take a risk that might cost you your life. But the choice is up to you I guess.

+Willi W. Yeah, this mindset makes no sense to me but you see it really often. "I'm a serious prepper, I've meticulously planned out every element of my survival plan in the event of a major catastrophe... hey, would it really be thaaaaat bad to use old, out of date, potentially dangerous mask filters instead of just buying readily available new ones that are in date and safe?"

Any idea what rating the s10 filers are? Also, can a cap seal only filter last 10 year easily and do vacuum sealed ones have a pretty much guaranteed lifetime?

S10 filters should be A2B2E1K1-P3 at a minimum, foil wrapped filters are normally 10-15 years expiration dates.

Yeah filters are still fine once expired for show, they may even still work, the old dangerous filters are the ones that contained asbestos etc.

The rubber could break down over time yes. I have an S10 made in 1988 and the rubber is still in great condition and very pliable. I only recently obtained the mask, but my guess is that it did not see much use from its former owner(s).

If you use a filter on the mask just for fun and then seal it wil it still work

This is a bit old, but more or less, yes. If you aren't using it for a life saving situation, feel free to use an older open filter. The charcoal part that stops chemicals and "smells" will usually expire after a few months onced open, but hey, if the environment it's left in doesn't have much in it for it to absorb, it could last a while longer, but if you're using it for a health/safety reason, you'll probably want a fairly fresh filter cause, as some have pointed out, the charcoal part that stops the really bad stuff you don't know is bad until you notice you're smell the bad stuff. The particle part works until you can't breath through it, so if you're just using it for dust, you'll know when it isn't working anymore.

@Predator depends on what the situation is. What you're filtering out and how much of it there is are going to decide how long the filter will go. Some chemicals will eat up how the charcoal works and if there's so much of it, you may only have like 20 minutes if you're unlucky

@Predator but as he's said in other videos, maybe a few hours, but don't use gas masks to go INTO bad situations, they are for getting out. Since I'm assuming you're asking about for Corona, probably a few hundred hours of breathing since you won't be breathing in tons of dust so the particle portion of the filter will last a long time.

@Predator yeah, the particle portion that would be used for viruses, dust and such is a different part than what stops chemicals and gases. The part for gases kind of will go bad over time as it slowly absorbs things from the environment it is in if it isn't sealed. The particle part slowly clogs with dirt when in use. Even if it isn't sealed, it should work until you use it enough to catch enough dirt or other particulates in the filter to no longer be able to breath through it.
