It is an easy test. But you need to help your multi meter adding a battery or DC Voltage source, and setting your tester for DC Volts test.

This is by far the best video in demonstrating how to test the diode, first with diagrams, and then showing the test with great pace and simplicity! No around-the-bush stuff, just straight to the point. I wish I had seen this at the beginning - searched, read, and watched (some videos) spending 2 hours but nobody made sense until I came across this video. Just excellent!!.... many thanks!

Very clear instruction with demo and schematic, including the important fact, left out in most other YouTude explanations) that the meter voltage is battery (9.31v + or -) minus voltage drop across the diode (near 4 or 5 v) equals near 5.0v. Thank you so much, keep it up!

Muchas gracias. No sabía acerca de la caída de voltaje en el diodo, por lo que mis 5 voltios me hicieron pensar que el diodo estaba defectuoso. Aparentemente no lo es. Gracias a ti, ahora comprobaré otras cosas. Thank you very much. I did not know about the voltage drop across the diode so my 5 volts had me thinking that the diode was bad. Apparently, it is not. i like the video, it helps me understand a lot.i have one thing to ask ,normally most of the time as i observed most of the magnetrons are supplied with a 3 to 4V Ac and up to 10 A current flowing through the filament. what will happen if the supplied voltage to the filament is increased or decreased? what makes the microwave output power high or low ?is is the filament voltage variation or the high voltage side variation ?
@g0fvt
@g0fvt 4 года назад
The emission of an old magnetron might increase with a bit more filament voltage but it does not take much overvoltage to hugely reduce the life.

Yes. A diode is a diode. Nothing more or less. High resistance in one direction & low in the opposite = Good Diode. Low resistance in both directions = Bad diode. (short circuit) High resistance in both directions = Bad Diode. (Open circuit) ( It's basically a halfwave rectifier.)

nice bob, you know it's kind of funny when electricians merely want to explain a test of sorts, they begin with circuit board language and formulas that if the common non electrician doesn't understand. so the style that 99.99% of testing descriptions and examples you guys give, are basically for someone who understands electricity or components enough they're not interested or benefit none from it. when a question arises especially on "wiring" something, a motor or a simple circuit both come the show of how much you've learned throughout your studies and algebraic formulas. sometimes you gotta speak like you would if you didn't know about it.

@@bob.kalpon1398 Your test is exactly correct based on my microwaves repair instruction and for the reason you state. You're right on the money as far as the diode testing procedure is concerned my friend. My included microwave repair testing/specs has in addition to the 9v battery test, testing the resistance of the diode itself. No other repair video or instructions I've found anywhere details a resistance test of the diode itself EXCEPT mine from what I can tell and a lot of folks don't have meters that go that high, it's extremely sensitive for a cheap Chinese model, but works well. :) LOL So, I thought I'd see if you has seen that. My Kenmore Elite model 721.66462500 expanded servicing instructions I just happened to find online. Page 23 detail my diode testing procedure: www.appliancefactoryparts.com/content/pdfs/142308-2.pdf It's ashamed YT doesn't allow small file or picture attachments, pretty stupid actually, it would be very helpful in dialogs such as this. I think YT (Google) is missing the boat on this one. If they were smart they would add that capability to keep people from logging off Google product to search forums that allow file attachments in conversations. I guess Google's maturing and turning into another "old boy" company.

@@ThePreyMantas The 40MOhm test is just to ensure we got infinite resistance. It means if 20 Mega Ohms was the maximum scale, then 20 Meg is the infinite... The reason why I said we can get confused is because we can get readings from hands, table, even inductance around. The main idea should be to find out if there was current linkage, but that test must be more specific. (I am glad I passed your test! ...I made a newest video about the microwave diode tes and it is between my las videos uploads).

@@bob.kalpon1398 Hi Bob, That's what I figured and I noticed it was so sensitive that even getting hands in close proximity of the probe tips cause minute variations. When I first got the meter (mainly for capacitance and uF measurement) I was concerned because it was unbelievable inexpensive I thought maybe it wasn't going to be keeper tool, but I was wrong and it turns out it has much lower measuring ability than my Fluke! As you could see in my service manual, there are somethings that are vague and some things that can be confusing for the uninitiated like myself. I'm a nuts and bolts guy (Journeyman Machinist/Programmer by trade) so I'm great with computers, programming and making trick high quality, very tight tolerance, complex machined parts. Electronics... Ahhhh, not so much. I'm just starting to get into it (out of necessity as you can see), so I suspect I'll pick it up if I stick to looking at schematics and using the hell out of Google. +davecc0000 That is a good question. When we try to test devices, this diode, another devices, like leds, "mosfets transistors"... We don't want to explore the highest voltages. We want to go for the lowest or minimum voltage we can use to perform the test. Remember some devices are low current, or low reverse voltage case sensibility. I can heat exactly the same food or liquid in the same cup or dish at same coldness and one time the microwave will stay an high untill the end of the cycle the next time around the magnetometer cycles on and off on high... The next time it's OK and so on... It's friggin driving me up the wall as its impossible to heat frozen foods as the instructions will say heat on high yutta yutta minuets... And I can't do that!!! It's not a setting either... I specifically set it on 100 percent power.. And it friggin cycles on high.. I'm ready to through it off a cliff!!
