How to test a transistor using a digital Multimeter

Easy way to test a transistor using a digital Multimeter. In summary, to determine what type of transistor is by swapping positive and negative probes until you get 2 forward bias voltage reading for example 1 positive probe on one pin and another two pin is on negative probe then it is an NPN transistor.
To determine the which pin is collector, emitter and base:
Emitter = forward bias voltage is higher than collector pin
Collector = lower forward bias voltage compared to emitter pin
Base = reference probe for both two junctions in forward bias

The center pin is not always base. Japanese transitors base is usually the first pin. Friendly suggestion is to refer transitors datasheet for pin layout.

I have transistors with low voltage readings in the .473V -.486V range, can I assume these transistors are bad? Should I get readings .6V and up? The transistors I have are 2SB600 and 2SD555 from an amplifier that has very LOUD static.

They all read one side. Does it all depend on transistor type . ? These are PNP transistors have

in your first transistor testing you are using a 2SC5568 or a 2N5568 transistor, so its a NPN not PNP like you say on the video at 6:40... According to what the datasheet of a C5568 says..

So does this mean that the Base to Emitter junction has a higher resistance value than the Base to Collector junction? If this is true then can we use an Ohm Meter?
@shawalsi4450
@shawalsi4450 7 лет назад
Base to emitter junction has higher resistance because of heavier doping of the emitter semiconductor layer and it will also work on ohm meter.
@bensonlamadrid612

Hi, nice tutorial. Could you explain hfe value is and if it makes any difference if you match this value when building something?
@shawalsi4450
@shawalsi4450 7 лет назад
hfe is a gain or amplification value for transistor, it can be found on the datasheet. For example, if Base current is supplied with 4mA and the transistor has a gain value of 10 then the collector current will be flowing at 40mA. The gain will depend on your transistor and circuit, its typically used for signal amplifier, audio amplifier and more.

my meter just reads 0.L no matter what combo i try. do i need a lower voltage multimeter?
@ihavecojones
@ihavecojones 4 года назад
First check that your probes make good contact ( press the probes into the multimeter tight, and check with continuity if it beeps). Secondly, check that you are are in diode test mode. to do that turn the knob (if it has a knob like most multimeters do) to the diode/continuity tester. Some have a "mode" button that you have to press to cycle between the modes ( diode check/continuity test). If all is good but you still get OL that means that the transistor is open circuit faulty . To check if a transistor is good you must do 6 checks 3 checks in the direct biased way, 3 checks in the reverse biased way. because sometimes the transistor can become closed circuited faulty, but measuring the correct forward biased voltage drop.

Does this test work with an unknown Infrared receiver with 3 legs? I tested each pin in 2 ways: Left to Center, Left to Right , Center to Right. with the red test lead in the Left hand & black in the Right it reads: 130, 0, 0 with the black test lead in the Left hand & red in the Right it reads: 130, 812, 677 The Only Markings on it are: It says 3D on the Flat back opposite the Hemisphere front Bulge lens. Do you ting I got a pretty good chance of using this for an IR remote control camera shutter trigger? Also I have Zero plans on ordering anything over the internet and radio Shack skipped Town so I AM Stuck salvaging electronic parts from peoples Trash or GoodWill. So whadaya think, AM I gonna Win or what;^D Seriously tho I'd appreciate your feedback cause I would like to get about 20 foot range on a wireless remote for My Camera and those 2 pin IR photo-transistors only seem to get about 12inches in which case I would be better off runnin' 50 feet of Telephone Line. Oh and check this madness out. I went to turn My Desk to Computer on this week and somebody sole the Power chord. Now it take a real Special kinda person to Break into My Home and not steal the Computer but are Hell Bent to steal the Power Chord to it. They didn't get My Telephone Wire tho, pretty happy about that ;^D

Better to identify the IR receiver based on the device shape and check the datasheet online. You can try use super bright IR led to increase the distance.

With a low end multimeter like this, you simply cant tell whether a result of 0.661V is actually higher than 0.660V. It's within the multimeter's spec to say that the 0.060 could have an actual higher voltage than the 0.061 result.
