In this video we will explain how to test alternator diode on BMW e46, e91, e90, e92, e93 and how a bad alternator diode can affect your BMW and cause battery drain. The alternator diode is very important for the normal operation of the charging system. If the alternator diode is bad this will cause battery drain when you do not drive your car. We we will explain how to test alternator diode on 2006 BMW 325i but it should cover the whole generation BMW E90 E91 E92 E93 and even generation E46.

I have a question that wasn't covered here? I'm curious to know how many amps the stock 210 alternator on the 328i N20 is putting out at idle. I'm considering buying a meter to test it but they are pretty expensive, so I figured I would ask you first. Thanks

Can't you just install a new voltage regulator if the alternator has one? Vs. swapping the whole alternator?

Great Video , Do you think a faulty isb cable can damage the altenator diodes and rectifier? My situation : I just had a fully charged battery drain over night , I had a new one installed this morning. Drove the car around for two hours, battery volts were at 14.3 all day ( had the scanner connected while driving ) , 12.8 at idle with the key in the on position , motor off. I took the car in to a local shop and the said the Diode has a failed reading , they had a more " expensive " scanner. I think driving with a faulty ibs cable could have damaged the altenator , it's a brand new Bosch altenator 150 amps , my car is 155.. That's what FCP Euro sent me , the tech over the phone said a 5 amp difference won't be anything serious. Another person also mentioned that.. Tonight I have the ibs cable disconnected , so hopefully I get no over night drain. Please let me know what you think , thanks ~

Hi.. on bmw e46, the test on the cluster gives me 12.8 to 13v, not more. On the other hand, using a multimeter alternator itself gives me 14v, but the Jumpstart post gives me 12.8 as well as the battery. What could be the problem? Please help. 🙏

What happens if you don’t disconnect the red wire? Will it still read? Just tested on my E90 and getting nothing.

I am having alt/battery problems. I did this test and got .359, my alternator says its putting out 13.5v but my battery was drained of all CCA

hi mate I have 2007 e90 320i with an n46 engine the problems I'm having is when I start the car the enging light use to blink few times go away then back blink few times then stay now on all the time and then service light comes on when driving al the time blinkers don't work windows don't operate no horn headlights stays on and the engine check light stays on all the time and sometimes extra warning lights come on like ASB HANDBRAKE sometime just sometimes the service light goes away and the blinkers work windows work still no horn and the engine light stays on the battery was replaced by the previous owner so not sure if it has been registering I've checked online and someone suggested maybe the voltage regulator is not good so I checked with my meter when the car is not on it shows 13.1 when the car is running it shows 14 ,4 is there another way to find out what i should be looking for i really like your page and regulary watch all the info you provide so decided to ask you plz help

Register your battery to the Module and check the IBS and make sure your grounds are well and another thing to check is since ABS comes on CHECK abs sensors/ speed sensors
