Hello everyone! I would like to share with you useful video: HOW TO TEST OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. Everything You Need To Know. I looked a few videos on RU-vid, couldn't find the right one. Then dissuaded to make my own one.
I tried my best to cover briefly enough everything you need to know: how do oil pressure switch (sensor) works, types of the sensors and how to test the sensor with a multi-meter.
If it will help someone - my goal was accomplished.

Thanks for taking the time to help us with this diagnostic... One question that I can't get past is durability of these sensors. I have had Toyotas, Hondas, ford f150 and many more vehicles with more than 150,000 miles with no failure ever of the oil sensor. I have a jeep wrangler that failed after 19,000 miles and this is a common problem for other low mileage FCA vehicles. These sensors seem to be pretty bullet proof except new FCA vehicles. What can possibly make FCA sensors so weak????
@PistonShack
@PistonShack 4 года назад
Hi JL T, FCT aka Fuel control actuators is electronically controlled solenoid valve controlled by ECM. Valve regulates entering fuel pressure at the high pressure side of the pump. I don't know much about them but solenoids intend to fail way more often than super simple old school membrane oil pressure switches. Plus it could be the manufacture poor design or low quality components used for the solenoid, like wire coils, seal, actuators ect. I don't know if it helped you much. Thanks for watching and subscribing to our channel. Cheers)

Thank a lot for the info. What do people mean when they say ground you oil pressure switch ? Is that just to test the sensor it self ? I have a 1.9 TDI Jetta 03. My engine was rebuilt and now it's throwing the oil warning. It only does it like 10-15 minutes after fully warmed up and smokes a bit more at that time and not while warming up.
@PistonShack
@PistonShack 2 года назад
Hey Argjent! Ground the switch, means Turn it ON or OFF, depends from the circuit design. I would check actual oil pressure then test the sensor. Seems like you have poorly rebuild engine, main bearings gaps out of specs probably but check oil pressure at idle and 1500-2500 rpm. Cheers!

My Van does not start. I took out the sensor and i mesure it, it has closed circuit, i tried to blow it with my mouth but id did not change. If if the oil is full and with or without started engine is the sensor going to change state from closed to open? I think probably not and my starting problem should be somewhere else not the switch.

Hi Gator! Ford oil switch should be normally closed type. But you can easily check it out. Unplug the connector from the sensor. Set multi-meter to Omhs. Place positive probe to the connector negative against the switch body. With engine off, switch contacts should be closed, multi-miter should read "zero"

Great video, thx! Can you tell me if a pressure oil sensor like this can be used with a oil pressure gauge instead of just a red light in the dash?
@PistonShack
@PistonShack 3 года назад
Hi Davib. Yes, absolutely! You can buy aftermarket oil pressure gauge kit and install on your vehicle using with you factory oil alert indicator. You need to connect the signal wire to the sending unit and to the gauge itself in basic words explained. What vehicle do you have, bzw? Let me know how everything is going! Cheers)
@flinch622
@flinch622 3 года назад
No. These are open or closed switches in this video, and there is no linear output to drive a gauge [or computer input] with. A proper sending unit may be two or three wire, not one. Two wire is generally not seen in automotive, but marine - as a 4-20mA signal for engine monitoring. In the case of this switch being tested, I would plumb to a regulated air line to see what the actual pressure switching point is - an "idiot" light design may be anywhere from 4 to 15 psi on proper setpoint, depending on vehicle and contact opens on rising pressure to remove return path for the indicator light. Conversely, a safety shutdown [usually tied into a relay somewhere] is going to open on falling pressure [15psi is a pretty good generic number, but will vary between engines - some need higher setpoints, some can get away with lower]. I am not a fan of 4psi designs - I want an indicator on at a bare minimum of 10psi. 4psi usually means my engine has already died and is spinning down and... I need a light for that? No, I don't think so.

Is it possible for an oil pressure sensor to become stuck on not giving me a low oil pressure warning while at the same time leaking oil due to a blown seal in the switch. therefore causing an oil leak to go unnoticed then causing the engine to run dry of oil and seize?
@PistonShack
@PistonShack 4 года назад
Hi, Ronnie. Technically, yes. Oil pressure switch failure could lead to potential catastrophic engine failure if oil pressure dropped below 5 psi. Reasons you mention could be one of them. I use Teflon tape to seal switch threats to prevent any leaks. Cheers.
@ronnieromero7604
@ronnieromero7604 4 года назад
It's truly horrifying knowing that your oil pressure sensor could blow a seal, leak oil and give no warning while on a long highway trip and eventually blow your motor. Is there no fail safe to prevent this from happening?

ECU test oil pressure switch every time you start the car. Low oil indicator should come on for a second then turn off. If light doesn't light up indicates issue with switch, bulb or circuit.
