This video will help you test and replace an ice maker in a Maytag or Whirlpool Gold French door refrigerator part number W10882923.
In this peticular case the ice maker was defective. The motor just kept running and running and running like the energizer bunny. This means the ice maker is bad and needs to be replaced. Below will be a link to the ice maker if you need one as well.
Here are some tips below to help you in the troubleshooting process. Good luck!
Tip #1 To get voltage to this ice maker the unit has to be in diagnostics and on test #25. This is the ice maker test other wise you won’t be able to test the ice maker for operation.
#2 A few things about testing this ice maker. To get it running you need a jumper wire to jump between the “T” and the “H”. This makes the ice maker think it’s ready to harvest and should start the motor. If you are getting voltage between the “L” and the “N” and it still won’t move. Change the ice maker. If it goes all the way around and won’t fill with water, but you can hear it try to fill, you will be looking at a fill problem. Either the water valve has failed, filter is clogged, frozen water line etc.
#3 To install this ice maker you need to replace the harness as well if it hasn’t been updated already. In the box or come with two different ones. Match up the one you take out and install the correct one. You will know if you have the right one if everything matches the old one and you have no left over connectors after installation.

Thank You! Excellant tutorial. You saved me several hours of frustration and cursing. This video made this so much easier. For others troubleshooting their own problems. My ice maker stopped making ice. I removed it, and it had ice in the maker, but was not harvesting. I melted the old ice and reinstalled. It would not fill with water. I put it in diagnostic mode 25 and jumped H and T and it would cycle, but never call for water. Checked the fill valve with my multimeter and I had 185 ohms on 1 and 256 ohms on the other. My internet search said I should have about 500 ohms but I felt like it was the ice maker not calling for water, so I replaced that. Installed new ice maker per these instructions and problem solved.

Ok so I just replaced my ice maker and currently have the same issue you described. I jumped the T and H and the unit fills and cycles. Issue is that the water just sits in the mold and freezes. What am I missing here.

This video is AWESOME! Made the job a breeze. thanks much! For other folks diagnosing: My icemaker wasn't getting water but the regular water dispenser on the door was fine. It was getting 110V to the icemaker unit using service mode "25" command, but it would only go into cycle test w/ bail arm actually moving 1 of the 4 times I tried it. Additionally, the valve for the icemaker tested about 180 ohms resistance so I assumed that was good enough. I replaced the icemaker itself and, BOOM, we have ice now. Thanks again.

@@BeardedApplianceRepair seriously. It was a part supplier, repairclinic.com. Their how to video skips the replacement of the wire harness completely. Because Of that and because I didn’t think I needed to replace the harness I contacted them thinking the replacement wasn’t a match. I nearly sent the thing back to them.

Excellent video and I couldn’t of done it without you but there’s a couple of really big issues that I would like to address that will make installation much much easier for any other DYIer watching this video. Firstly, you do not have to disconnect the auger motor and attempt to use a nut driver long enough to reach the grounding screw. You can simply disconnect the solenoid from the two screws in the back using a Phillips head screwdriver. There are two tabs you push in after removal and the entire piece comes out with the grounding screw attached. Second, when reinstalling the ice machine there is a small door on top of the refrigerator that is the access point for the water for your icemaker. Simply remove the door and push the hose up from the inside where it protrudes down until it’s flush. This allows the icemaker to slide in with ease and you simply push down on the hose on the top of the refrigerator and replace the door after you’re done. I beg of you to add these steps because it made a huge difference in my installation.

Question since this icemaker had a test mode. What was the purpose of testing it for voltage? Or were you trying to see if it was a voltage drop under the load? But great video got one I gotta look at in about a hour.

Enjoyed the video. Learned a lot. I'm having trouble with water building up under the fill tray and freezing. The ice tray also builds up a layer of ice and the ice maker will not dispense ice. I can't seem to find out where the water is coming from. When I had the ice maker out I put water in the tray and there were no leaks. I would appreciate any input you have to this problem. Thanks

Ours is one year old. I drink water daily from the door dispenser. Today I went for ice through the door, which I usually don't do. Lots of sediment in the bottom of my glass as the ice melted. I just took out the ice bin and emptied it. We shall see after a fresh batch of ice is made. We replace the filter as suggested.

Many thanks for the clear, no nonsense instructions! I also was on the fence about it being the water valve solenoid or the ice maker. I ran the exact diagnostics you described and sure enough the ice maker wasn't calling for water. New ice maker is filling normally! I'm not sure if it's related but at the same time the ice maker failed my fridge began running warm. My freezer works fine though. So my ice maker started acting up. It makes ice but it doesn't harvest the ice. I manually have to harvest it by using a jumper wire on the H and T and that starts the motor and I'm able to harvest the ice and then fills with water and start the cycle again but after the ice freezes, it doesn't continue on to harvest the ice. I should probably just replace the entire unit but just curious what you think the issue is because it's obviously not completely broken. Thanks.

I have one of the same ice machines but the ice when they fall to the tray they stick together, it will be due to a lot of water pressure or there will be some configuration so that this does not happen. Because the ice sticks together because they no longer come out and they get stuck ..

Hello quick question about my fridge. I have a whirlpool model WRX735SDBM02. Ice maker stopped working. I checked to see if ice stocked or arm froze and both were fine. I found a video where it shows how to jump start which I did. The ice maker teeth started slowly moving so did the arm. Once it finished rotating water kicked on and filled the ice tray. After few hours we had some ice and then stopped again. If I do the same steps it will produce more ice but why is it not doing on its own? I also replaced water filter. Is there anything else I can try? Thank you!

Unfortunately no, that’s only on Frigidaire ice makers to my knowledge. For those I make sure the customer changes the water filter. Still have a problem? than it could be in the plumbing before the fridge or water valve on the fridge. You can do a water pressure test and see what kind of pressure is coming in. I believe they need somewhere around 60psi. The installation manual may have the exact specs needed

I have a French door-type Maytag refrigerator, the problem is that it starts making ice normally after about 15 days the ice begins to make balls together, that is, all the ice sticks on the tray and the ice no longer packs, because they are stuck I went in yes, by removing the ice manually, it returns to produce normal ice but after 15 days it does the same again .. I already changed the new ice maker, only the pure ice maker and the problem persists .. the question is why it is happening That or what suggestion could you give me exactly? It has that same ice maker model !!

Hi...May I ask for a little direction? I have this exact ice maker. I have probably 3 separate issues with my ice maker. My biggest issue is that after my first problem many years ago, the ice bin filled too full and it was stuck closed. I broke the plastic holding clips for the ice maker/bin housing while trying to get it open. Can that be replaced? Also, the "switch" or whatever that pauses ice making when it's full, is still an issue. I usually just open it and turn it off until it gets low. Then thirdly, and finally, the cubes do not separate, as in, they fall in full 4-5 piece clumps. I feel confident that if I replaced the ice maker it would fix problem 2 and 3, but the broken plastic clips in the housing, I can't seem to identify in parts diagrams. Can you help? Thank you.( My fridge is 16 years old now and I know it's probably more reliable than whats in the stores now. Thats why we've lived with it for so long. Having said that, if I can't repair this issue and the time comes that i need to replace my fridge, what do you find to be most reliable? )

Thank you for the Video. I have the same ice maker but mine is over filling and flooding the ice maker and into the refrigerator. It happened twice about 2 weeks apart. The water side has been fine. But when this happened the valve clicks on to fill the ice maker and doesn"t shut off . Thank God I was home both times. Do you think it is the ice maker or the dual water valve feeding the ice maker?
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 5 лет назад
Martin McDonough if I had to guess I would say it was the water valve. Could be water pressure too. Have you change the filter lately? When you say it clicks is it a rapid click? Kinda like a machine gun sound. If so I would say water valve for sure. I would change the filter too though. How you know if it the ice maker is you have to check voltage at the valve when it’s clicking. If you see power cut in and out you’re looking at the ice maker. All this is if it’s a rapid click. To be safe you can get all three lol. Good luck!

I have a Maytag with a similar ice maker. If I remove the ice maker, is there a way to jumper the refrigerator side of the wire harness to get the water to flow out of the tube that fills the ice maker? The refrigerator is inside an RV and this would be extremely helpful for winterizing.
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 3 года назад
I would just disconnect the tube. Gravity will get the water out of it. It’s only held in there by a vacuum in the tube. If you have ever had a drink with a straw and you hold the top on the straw over the hole and lift it out the drink will stay in the straw. Than when you let go the drink falls out. That essentially what your doing there when you disconnect the waterline from the valve.

There should be a way to turn it on. On some models there is a button in the display that turns on and off the ice maker. Others you will have to go into options to turn it on. If those don’t work or can’t figure it out I would find your use and care manual and it should mention how to do it in there. If you need the manual you can look up “Maytag manuals” on google to get the website where you can pull up the manual by model number.

Make sure it has power at “L” and “N”. If it does you need an ice maker. If not you will have to check power from the board to the harness at the ice maker. Do not jump L and N. That will cause a short and potential damage to your fridge.

F C my bad I was thinking of another video. Thought the comment was on that one. Try the filter if you haven’t already. Clogged filter can cause the mold not to fill up completely and can cause ice making issues. Make sure it getting cold enough. Ice box fan can fail I believe there is a test for it in diagnostics. Tech sheet should be under the top right hung cap. If it’s not there check behind the kick plate. Mess with the door switches a little bit too. If you see one of them fail the ice maker won’t cycle like it should. Only will cycle if the door is closed. That’s what I would look for, only other thing would be a bad board or ice maker(even if it’s brand new. Can’t really test if it’s a bad board either. Just have to try it and see what happens. Good luck!

Question...so i replaced the same unit with the same replacement unit as shown in this video and while it does make ice, it does so very slowly. 48+ hours and it's only made a few batches of ice. What i noticed watching this video is that i did not put that thermal fuse in the metal clip or swap out the bail arm to the new one....would this cause the slow ice production?
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 5 лет назад
I wouldn’t think so no. All you need for it to make ice is for it to be cold and have the right amount of water. If it’s not cold enough it will take more time for it to freeze the ice. If your not getting the mold to fill up all the way it will slowly produce ice as well. So check temps and water pressure. If you haven’t changed the filter recently give that a shot.

Does the water fill up the whole mold? If it doesn’t I would continue to try and figure out the pressure problem. Trying a new filter if you haven’t already. Second would be water pressure from the wall. I believe you want at least 60 psi there. If the mold is filling up like it should than you may have a cooling problem. Could be a fan failure, defrost issue, Freon leak or restriction. Pray it’s not a leak or restriction. One thing you could do is clean your condenser. If it has lint or pet hair on it could restrict air flow across the condenser which can effect the cooling of your fridge. Good luck!

Chris Szulc ice makers have a thermostat that tells it that it is ready to make ice. When the ice maker fills with water the temp goes from day 0 degrees(freezer temp) to 70 (water temp) when it get down to 5-10 degrees is says hey this is now ice let’s drop it and make some more. On the first try it was probably sensing it from room temp to the 5-10 degree for harvest. The second trip maybe it got enough water back to that thermostat to bring the thermostat temp up so when it got back down to 5-10 degrees is made it the second time. You either have a cooling problem where it’s not getting cold enough to made it consistently or water pressure problem where water is not reaching the thermostat to tell itself “hey we’re starting another round”. I hope this makes sense to you. Degrees may vary on the type of ice maker you have. It may work at 15 degrees instead of 5-10. If I had to put money on it I would say you have a water pressure problem.

Chris Szulc I would get a pressure gauge on your supply and see what it reads. If it read close to 60psi you can rule that out. From there you can trace the water through the system and see where the pressure drops. This tool should have everything that you need. When your saying about testing L and N and not getting voltage its a circuit card where would that be located? My problem is i cant get ice made and also cant get it to refill with water when testing in 25? If i buy the ice maker link you have located will that fix my problem?
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 5 лет назад
If your not getting voltage between l and n during test 25 you may be looking at the main board. They should be on the back wall of the unit. 4 screws than you take the panel off and it’s right there. If you are getting voltage it could be your water valve or ice maker. If you have voltage and jump the v and l it sends power down to the valve. If it fills than you ice maker will be the culprit. If it fails you will be looking at the water valve. I would make sure you have good pressure at the wall by running the water dispenser. If you have good water flow than I would say it would be your water valve. Randomly we find broken wires and such but in rare occasions. Still a possible problem though. Good luck!

Shawn Louey if you replaced the water valve behind that panel in the fridge I would say you fixed it. Hopefully you're still fielding comments. I had an issue where the icemaker wasn't receiving water. I tested it by jumping V and L. It was calling for water, but not receiving it. I bought the replacement double inlet valve, installed it, tested it by jumping V and L and it seemed fine. Put the false panels back in the fridge cabinet and tested it again by jumping lifting the arm. Nothing. Tried jumping V and L. Nothing. Then I noticed the fan wasn't blowing from the icemaker, even with the door switches taped shut. Everything seemed to be working fine for about 30 seconds, but now it seems like I'm just not getting power. I checked continuity on the purple wire with the fuse, but everything seems normal. Anything I might have missed, like a bother fuse somewhere? It's just so odd that the icemaker seemed to be working fine until I replaced the valve, and decided to take a shit immediately afterwards
