Test for AC Compressor Clutch Function. Knowing when your AC compressor is running or not is critical to diagnosing the AC system, but also for charging the system. Reading the low side pressure must be done when the compressor is running. In this video, you'll learn to do both.

I like how you demonstrated this by comparing the test on a broken compressor vs a brand new compressor. Showed how it should work (new) and how a broken one does not work. That power probe really does the easy job for testing the fault.

Last summer my mustangs ac stoped working so I just used speaker wire with a nail taped to it to put 12volts to the compressor clutch, pretty hacked but it worked ( ended up being a bad constant control relay module so I had to pay like $100 for a new one instead of just buying a relay)

Not to mention that new compressors come oil up already. I had the same problem with my first car the fan clutch went out and the shop I took it to told me. It's a lot easier to replace the whole compressor than have something else go bad later down the road. So I did even though it cost almost about 1k. But we'll worth it.
@teravolt6113
@teravolt6113 6 лет назад
Not necessarily a new compressor is the way to go. I've had the Harrison CVC compressor in my car stop working about 6 years ago, after 8 years with the car down the road. The clutch coil died because the original coils come with a thermal fuse that just like in home appliances opens up without a reason from time to time (heat cycling or vibrations perhaps) since the coil didn't have any oxidation or burn marks at all and the fuse didn't look like it melted or burned up (i asked to have the failed coil given to me so that i could examine it). Paid about 400 bucks to have it serviced (the compressor had to come off due to cramped space preventing clutch assembly access from the front), and not the 1000 bucks for a brand new compressor. A year later it ceased working again and this time the servicing was on warranty. That last coil has been working for 5 years, don't know whether it comes with a thermal fuse or not, the thermal fuse probably is on the coil to allow the compressor to immediately disengage as soon as it starts locking up and making the clutch slip, but preventing compressor lockup is simply a matter of having your AC properly serviced once every 3 years so that gas and compressor lubricant oil levels are regularly checked and, if necessary, restored to proper levels, and fixing any leaks. But, for these compressors, a new clutch pulley assembly, including the coil, is about 150 american bucks or less, and a new clutch coil is even cheaper.

Hey Brian - Great video. My '97 Mazda MX5 (ok, Miata) had, in addition to the AC relay and the high & low side switches, a thermal protection switch (a thermocouple maybe?) that would cut power to the clutch if the switch sensed overheating. Basically, the power feed would go into this switch, and then a line from the switch to the clutch. Often, these switches would fail prematurely, even if the compressor & clutch were still working. Some Miata guys would simply bypass the switch to get the compressor working. Do you (or does anyone) know if the Honda compressor also has such a thermal protection switch? Thx

Someone had mentioned this to me last year when my AC stopped working on our record day here in WA when it reached 108° theorizing it might be that it overheated the "switch" that you are referring to! Makes me wonder!

My clutch comes on for a bit then stops. (2011 For Ranger)Or doesn't come on at all. When it comes on it blows real cold. I unplugged the wires, tapped on it and when I cranked up the truck, then it came on. Shows a lot of oxidized dust. I'm pretty sure you helped me confirm the problem. Thanks.. Nice ski footage!

thanks for the video it is helpful. I have a unique issue. I have replaced the condenser, L/P switch due to damage. Replaced all relays, just because they are cheap enough. Evacuated, vacuumed the system and recharged using a RobinAire service cart. Turn on the car with A/C system on full, the clutch engages, cooling fans turn on. The system cools the car 5-8 seconds. Cooling fans stop and clutch disengages. This happens every time I start the car. I am at my witts end, if you could offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

You dont need any of that to test the ac clutch. Thanks to RY the Car Guy for this info, look him up on youtube for visual on how to do the self test. For Nissan Xterra (and according to comments on his video, nissan pathfinders too, maybe other vehicles- worth a try lol) Put your wippers up. Put the key in and turn to on position, don't start the vehicle. With in 20 secs of turning the key to the on position press the little button on the drivers side door frame (the one that tells your vehicle the door is open/closed). Turn the key to off then back to on and you should hear a quick horn beep. Thats good and means the self test will run. Will test in this order rear defogger Wippers (this is why you should put them up. So not to run on dry windshield) Lights, parking/side, license plate frame, head low and high. Ac clutch (you will hear the clicks if its working) Electric fan. It runs through the tests 3 times. Or you can end the test by turning the key off. If you dont hear the clicks after the headlight test and before the fan turns on then your ac clutch isn't working. Check fuses/relays and if fine then need to replace the ac clutch.

I wondered about this., Just a lead from the battery positive to the correct pin and hey presto a clicking sound. However, I imagine that the system has to have sufficient Freon in it or it will not work.This is designed to prevent the Compressor burning out. My Compressor is not working and there is zero Freon in the system so........ Centre pin I think he said but not easy to check with a Multimeter as the power pin will only energise via the Thermal protection switch. This is just my take on this and I have no A/C experience, please note!

Brian, Where is the clutch what does it do? What is the line you keep touching and how do I get it? How do I know if the compressor needs to be replaced at all or if its the relay or some fuse? Where do I troubleshoot, in other words what are the first starting steps to know if I even have to get to the compressor or relay or arm whatever piece you were not pointing out. Okay power probe sales but I could also just use a piece of wire to the 12vt batter right?

Hello there. I have the coupe version to this car. My car makes a weird whining noise. Not squeak. Not grind. A whine. Sounds like power steering but was told its not. Its ac compressor. My ac works fine. Car buzzes/whines when ac compressor is off. When i turn ac on, noise goes away! Used to stay away, but only stays away when clutch engages. Ac compressor shuts off and car starts to whine again? Any idea what it could be? Bearing? Pulley? Belt? Car is noisy until ac compressor is turned on. So i turn it on everytime im driving to get rid of whine. Goes in and out whether or driving or idle. Mechanic says its compressor but the compressor helps get rid of noise so i dont understand how that could be my issue? Any thoughts?
