Having a cable tester is a must have if you're a serious pedal user. You need a reliable way to make sure your cables are passing signal in all the right ways quickly and definitively.
The downside to cable testers is that the cable typically has to be removed from your pedalboard entirely before you can test it.
I wonder if there is a tool out there that can allow easy testing of cables without removing them from your pedalboard?

I’m still a bit confused though. The numbers are supposed to be zero correct? I noticed the multimeter beeps even with numbers showing so I don’t know if that’s a bad thing or not. The sleep and tip don’t beep though.

@@kristenrocksfrags8584 it beeps for low resistance generally but not JUST zero... so ya, even with some numbers you can still get beeps / continuity.

That's useful - but how do we test the quality of the cable connection? i.e. resistance level - this determines weak vs strong connections, right? When learning to solder I've made cables with only one or two strands of tip or ring signal connected and they still pass this multi beep test - but I know the connection is weak. How do we get more granularity on the quality of connection? Thanks

hoesntly.. you could use resistance to test this, but even with a few strands connected, you'll get a good reading. The best way if you're concerned about this, test with resistance and then also give the connections a visual inspection.

ha. Fair. This is assuming your cables are tied to your board (zip ties / anchors etc). with a multi-meter you don't need to unclip / cut those zip ties to test. With a traditional cable tester you typically would (undoing a lot of hard work / time)

Look in the manual for a continuity settings. Most multimeters have them.

Maybe I missed something, but where is the difference to a Cable-Tester? I thought the Cabletester will also make the Beep and for both Methods I need to unplug all cables!

Great question. A cable tester will give you the same results, but if you can't get the ends of the cables to both come to the cable tester (within a couple inches of eachother) you can't use it. The main thing Im saying with a multimeter is it's way easier to test cables on your board when they are either tied in, or more likely extend across your board to connect two pedals. But you're right, if the cable is only going a short distance, the cable tester is just as easy to use (unless the cable is too short, then you need a multimeter again).
