Tony - if you burned your rectifier most likely your stator went bad too. The best way is to check each components individually. This video is sad. Great info with horrible video filming. Like post below, we can not see what wires are being hooked up.

So if I burned my rectifier will that cause my stator to melt? And if I reverse battery connections on accident like I did to burn my rectifier out in the first place, do I have to replace my power pack too? I have a 1989 XR4 that seems to load up when it gets hot. Runs great when cold. I also have black sticky crud below my stator.
