BMW fan clutch test. In this video we test the fan clutch or viscous coupling in a BMW #e39 sedan. The newspaper test as it is known, is where we test the functionality of the fan clutch at operating temperature (hot engine) to see if the clutch is engaging as it should. If working correctly, the newspaper forced into the fan blades should shred due to the strength of the fan and clutch. If the fan can easily be stopped with little force, the fan clutch is no longer engaging properly and the clutch must be replaced. This coupling cools down and releases the fan engagement while the car is moving/driving at speed; once parked, idling, in traffic it will engage again once it gets hot to allow for adequate airflow through the radiator to keep the engine cool. This is a crucial cooling system component to prevent the car from overheating. #saveabmw #bmwdiy

Hi BIMMER, can help me with my car. I have bmw e90 2005 petrol and its comsuming oil and i can see vaccum on the oil cap. I am getting blue smoke only when I come to a stop and start and then nothing even if i rev hard or multiple time after stopping

The bi-metallic strip on the front of it is very sensitive to heat small changes in heat make big changes in the size of it since it’s made of 2 metals with very different properties. When you drive the car warms up the radiator gets hot and the heat from the radiator warms up the bi-metallic strip it expands. Engaging a pin that opens a pass way for the fluid inside the fan clutch to move into the engaged position. When temperature drops the bi-metallic strip shrinks and does the opposite. Disengaging it.

Thank you so much for making this video, god bless i own a 98 e36 and it looks like my fan clutch is not working like its suppose to. Easy to stop with newspapaer and the car is overheating its overheating faster when the ac is on. I also have a done of oil leaks. No mechanic is serious about fixing it or finding the oil leaks 😮

Thanks a million,this video is so helpful,my E39 just cuts off in middle of the road,especially on very hot days when I'm driving at a slow speed,j then drove inn ag one of the machanics in town,he simply stopped the propeller with his fingers whilst the engen was running and told me to replace my viscous.so my question is,could this has damaged anyrhing else on my vehicle? because i kept on driving it with this problem without knowing what was going on,the vehicle runs very well after all. is my water pump and cylinder head still ok? Was this making any noise? Have a 3.0i that has a weird sequel around 2500rpm that goes away when you play with the throttle. Only happens when it's warm.

As a general question, wouldn't the fan clutch only really lock up when the temperature of the engine bay was high enough? I would also argue that the fan clutch locking up all the time is the worse way to go because then if you rev >3000 rpm it could explode the plastic fan and send shrapnel all over your engine bay, destroying your WP, t-stat, radiator, as well as your hood. If the fan clutch stopped locking up I believe the pusher fan in front of the condenser should be sufficient to keep the car cool in anything but extreme temperatures (the south or Arizona area).

LogicIsDumb yeah it should definitely be locked up idling at operating temps (ambient temp here 80*) so it should lock up and shred that newspaper! I’m not sure any failure is good, but locked at least it won’t overheat the engine and rip the head bolts out of the aluminum blocked M54! Thankfully in all my BMW driving years I’ve never experienced a fan explosion as you described but have def heard of it lol, that would suck

@@BIMMERZEITT I only ask because in my current car with a new fanclutch if ambients are low enough or it just got up to temp I can stop the fan fairly easily, but once its 90+ degrees or in traffic it locks up and I can hear it. Definitely agree with you on the newspaper trick, I tested it with my fingers on a hot day and lost quite a bit of skin off the end of them, lesson learned the hard way.

Not likely at all unless you fail to realize any of the several indications of an overheating bimmer. You're car will make it another day for sure, get the fan replaced and carry on in life.

I was reading a thread somewhere and the mechanic said he just always uses his hand. lol. I was like...so the options are, 1) the fan clutch is bad and you confirmed....orrrrrr....2) The fan clutch is good and you're down a hand.

I used my hand to stop it to show my brother it was broken but to be fair it was rotating at like 15 rpm. But yeah just use paper just in case it's moving so fast it looks like it's stopped 😆

I've tested the fan spinning many times. I've always just used my hand. No glove. I guess if I was scared I would wear a glove. You just let the ends of the fan blades rub against fingertips of your right hand against driver's side of fan. Don't stick your hand INTO the fan per se. At idle speed it's not a big deal. If you're going to rev the engine and test it, I would wear a glove then

10 years ago when I removed the mechanical fan, I installed an engine temperature gauge. The the temperature sensor is installed in the engine coolant outlet hose. also I installed two LEDs. A yellow one on then the A/C fan is running on low speed , and a red one on when the A/C fan is running on high speed. This is why I know these things. If someone removes their mechanical fan and they don't install an engine temperature gauge their engine likely gets very hot and they don't know it. The BMW engine temperature gauge on my 1998 Z3's dash does not indicate the engine temperature swings that I can see with the gauge I installed. Someone said BMW designed this gauge like this because the temperature swings disturbed some of their customers. If the engine temperature is extremely high the BMW engine temperature gauges moves full right. My fan clutch is working but it seems to me allow the engine to get too hot before it engages but maybe that is how it's designed.. I tested it today (88F ambient) climbing a steep mountain road with the A/C off and with the electric A/C fan fuse remover. It engaged when the engine coolant exiting the engine was around 210F (engine temperature) and disengaged around 195 F. Cruising on relatively level HW ( no steep hills) the engine temperature is maintained around 199F with or without A/C and the electric A/C fan. According to my Bentley service manual page ELE-40 the electric A/C fan should start on high speed around 99C = 210F at the radiator coolant exit. It seems if this is how it actually is the engine temperature would be extremely high prior to the electric A/C fan shifting to high speed. For those that don't know there is only one A/C fan motor and it has two windings. Hi and Lo speed. Only one winding is energized at a time. Both motor windings are not energized for high speed. I'm thinking the mechanical fan is partly engaged maintaining 199F while cruising and driving in town but it doesn't fully engage until around 210F going up a steep mountain road. Also the electric A/C fan alone (no mechanical fan) could not prevent the engine from over heating when going up the mountain road so I think maybe the fan clutch is partly engaged prior to the engine reaching 210F. unfortunately I forgot the engine temperatures I was seeing while going up the mountain road with both fans operating. . C Around 10 years ago I did the fan delete and installed a radiator exit temperature sensor that starts the fan at 190 F. When my engine overheated twice going up the mountain road I decided to put a new BMW OEM fan on the car so now I wish I had put the stock sensor back on the radiator. I would rather have my electric fan backing up the mechanical fan rather than the mechanical fan backing up the electric fan which is what I have now. I think the mechanical fan will never engage if the high speed electric fan is running unless I'm going up a steep mountain road with the A/C on. . I think I need to do something about this. Without the mechanical fan on a relatively level HW I didn't need the electric fan running even with the A/C on. Going up a steep mountain road is very different. Zork said " I've done some testing. Viscous fan off. [ I think he means no mechanical fan installed. I think he did the fan delete crap/error I did ] Aux fan works (new) and new 80/88c fan switch [ not stock] fitted. I've got my OBD reader plugged in and taking love readings. The middle of the gauge on the dash covers around 90-120celsius. It moves right toward the next mark (but not at the red) when temps get close to 130c. [ my BMW dash gauge is not like his ] The temp seems to sit around 120c when moving (light throttle, ambient temp of around 18c). After a run I stop and leave the car running and after a few minutes the temp climbs to 130c (and gauge moved to the next white line). The aux fan kicks in when OBD shows around 132c [ 270f, IMO at or near engine destruction ]. It runs for around 45seconds only and the switches off and shortly thereafter the temp drops back closer to 120c (and this cycle repeats). " Likely Zork was testing on a relatively level HW, not on a steep mountain road.

the newspaper does not immediately stop the fan but it eventually does after about 10-15 seconds, does this mean a good or bad clutch? the fan has obvious oil dampening when the engine is cold, it does not spin freely

got a e46 with 250k miles, fan doesn't turn on at all, even if the AC is on. high speeds the car runs and drives fine, but at low speeds it will slowly start to overheat. clutch fan the verdict?

your E46 has two fans. one is the electrical auxiliary fan behind the front bumper, and it also has a mechanical fan clutch behind the radiator. it is possible both of them have failed.

Would the temperature gauge needle move beyond the middle point towards the right if it overheats with a failed fan clutch? Do you get any message on the dashboard of the fan clutch fails?

yep it does move full right when the engine is extremely hot. I don't know what the engine temperature is when that happens.

Mine on my e39 is locked up. While I'm in there your think I should replace the water pump or no? It's not overheating.

If it is old, you can do the water pump, thermostat and serpentine belts (both main and ac - 2 belts total) along with fan clutch. You can also do the upper/lower radiator hoses too, "while you're in there" haha. It adds up.

It will only lock when the compound inside the clutch (viscous coupling) gets hot enough. Take it for a good drive and let it get up to operating temp. You shouldn’t be able to stop it typically with it idling in the driveway after a spirited drive. Not all fan clutches created equal. Aftermarket is hit or miss, I’ve seen defective ones a lot. Best bet is genuine BMW oem or Sachs. Then again, after 2020 there is little made to a high standard in Germany anymore. Sad times!

So I just tested my fan clutch, 2001 E39. Cold start - fan spins fast with engine, cant be stopped with piece of cardboard. So i think ok, clutch seized on. Then 30 secs later car drops off cold start fast idle, and fan relaxes - able to stop it with fingers - Huh? I guess I'll do newspaper test when full hot, but what's with starts locked, then releases?

I think at cold start the fluid in the clutch is viscous enough to drive the fan, then as it heats up it releases

Ok so to wrap up your test, in addition to how yours reacted when inserted the news paper on it, it resulted in a bad fan clutch off yours then?

thomas backer correct Thomas, the clutch in this green e39 in the video was bad and worn out. Another way to test would be to start the car (cold, temp needle all the way cold) and see if it shreds the newspaper. If it does, it is bad. The clutch is likely stuck on in the engaged position.

Péter Kovács fan clutch is designed to engage and disengage. If it is engaged 100% of the time cold and hot, it is bad. Replace it!

I disagree, both are worse ways. 1st way- your fan will just grenade and break into pieces and pierce your radiator or hoses then overheat as viscous fan are only designed to spin at 1800-2500 rpm. 2nd way is of course same thing-overheat.

Think another test is that one can spin the fan easily with the engine off but it wont spin if the fan clutch is working. My e30 fan spins all the time the engine is running or is that supposed to happen. It shreds the paper though.

Does it shred the paper with a stone-cold engine? If so, it might be stuck on. You'll notice that fan-clutch engaged sound all the time, would be an indication the clutch is bad. How old is the fan clutch?

@@BIMMERZEITT Many thanks for reply. The original fan clutch failed the paper test and the car used heat up slightly in traffic so I changed this back in 2008. The 'new' fan clutch will shred paper with a cold engine but the car has since never heated up in traffic and I assumed it was working correctly and this is the way they operated. It was also a lot louder than the original clutch which was just spinning at engine speed.

MsCelicagt4 interesting, what brand is the clutch from 2008? It sounds like it may be defective. The loud “fan engaged” noise you hear normally should only be present when hot and pulling off from a stop light or parking. As you journey down the road the car cools down and the clutch disengages (free wheeling) to save fuel economy etc.

@@BIMMERZEITT I will have to tell you tomorrow as its 2.50 at night here in Ireland. I dont think it was a BMW one though as I would have the invoice in my foot thick dossier. I will have to study my fan clutch now to see what it does. I know you did a great tutorial on cleaning the gauges on an e30 but my fuel gauge shows full all the time so can you take that case on as well. Back tomorrow--thanks for help.

@BIMMER ZEIT Checked there and no manufacturer name evident at least from the angles I'm checking but would be a recognised make I would imagine. On start up from cold, I noticed that the fan clutch can be slowed down with the paper--I will check operating temperature performance later. I just remember it being much more vigorous in its spinning at the time than the clutch it replaced.
