If your doorbell isn't working you may need to replace your transformer. Here's how to test it with a multi-meter so you can be sure it is the problem and not your doorbell, button or wiring.

Just wanted to say thank you for the video. After watching it I checked my setup for my Ubiquiti doorbell camera and saw what it wasn't putting out enough power. I swapped one wire and now it's working like a champ.

Thanks for the video Steve! Very informative and helpful. Always good to see what we should expect to see along with your explanations. Thanks!

@SteveBrainard - Thank you!... I installed a WIRED RING DOORBELL, but was unable to program it, due to low voltage. Until I saw your "replacement transformer" with the 3 discrete possibilities, I had no idea such a set-up was possible. I did a bit of wire "re-arranging"; the doorbell stopped flashing, and started circling (as designed). I'm grateful for the clear explanation. Thanks again!

Did you wire the new transformer for 24 volt output for the Ring to work, as Steve mentioned? I tried to install a Ring doorbell in an older home but never saw the white circle. I’m thinking I may need to upgrade the transformer to 24v.

@@MPD-ih6sm - Hi!... Yes, I simply changed the position of one wire, to the "higher" number, and it's now working fine. (I DID purchase another transformer, but the tightwad within me thought, "Heck, let me at least TRY the different wire placement..." and VOILA!... it worked!... Good luck on yours!

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ru-vid.comUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

Question: How can I determine if any current/how much current is flowing to our doorbell? Not sure how to read multi-meter.

On step down side got 0.1 ohms... that still hooked to power so idk if it should still be 2.8???

When I test the ohms on my transformer I get 89.9 ohms on the 120 volt side. It started making the speaker for my doorbell hum.

On the bright side your narration is very clear and pleasing to the ear. But I had to watch another video to get what I needed. It’s likely people who know “what we’d expect to see in ohms,” or about the secondary side, yadda, yadda, yah wouldn’t need this type of advice in the first place. I’m left wondering if the goal was to impress with your knowledge of electrical current or to help DIY’ers check if their transformers are producing enough volts .

I have adt doorbell cameras on my side and front door. The led lights won't come on nor does my doorbell work anymore. Could this be the reason?

How to check amps for the same transformer ?

My doorbell/address light transformer showed a voltage of 18.6 from the secondary lines. It should be at 16 volts. Should I replace a new transformer?
@richardl6751
@richardl6751 Год назад
The 18.6 volts is probably the unloaded voltage. If you can, have someone press and hold the button for a few seconds while measuring the voltage, it will likely decrease.

It says measure in AC and AC volt has two choices; 750 and 200. I have the same meter as you. But you tested a choice on the bottom. Which one is right?

You aren't testing voltage. There's no power to it on the table. You are testing ohms of resistance. If it reads 1, that means there is no continuity... the circuit is dead.

120v input is ok. Check transformer no output voltage. Replaced new one check all resistance is fine. Still no volt out. Would you give me an ideal please

Did you ever figure this out by any chance?
@MPD-ih6sm

Did you check the secondary side while it was still connected to the doorbell? If so, try disconnecting the transformer output and recheck for voltage. Could be a short in the wiring to the doorbell that’s shorting the output of the transformer.

Can I use a 24v transformer on a 16v doorbell chime?
@richardl6751
@richardl6751 Год назад
Maybe not a good idea, there would be extra current flow due to the higher voltage.

My building is 60 years old and has loose insulation blown in, how do I find my transformer to check it ?

Your building is old and should be razed. Pour gasoline into the loose insulation and strike a match to it. 🔥
