I just came across your channel after doing a repair on my IMA-4406. The reason for the repair was because I had noticed that when I tried to play an AM Radio in my house, or the Nutone, all I would get was a loud buzzing noise on the radio on the AM band. The FM wasn't as bad, but it was still not a clear FM signal. I also noticed that if I was to drive into my garage in a car with an AM station playing, that just as soon as I entered the garage I would get the same static noise I would hear on the Nutone. I didn't hear it driving away from the house. I could hear my Nutone transformers buzzing behind the wall, and it seemed they were getting louder. That was what I thought was the problem. In order to troubleshoot the radio buzzing problem, I shut off the power to the circuit that ran the Nutone. This fixed the buzzing noise on all of the radios in the house and the cars no longer had the same noise in the garage. Initially, I considered replacing the transformers, but they tested fine. I then decided to look at the Nutone Master Station a bit closer. Upon removing the unit from the wall, I noticed a voltage regulator had gotten quite hot, on what appeared to be the power supply section of the Master System. So hot that it was now standing at about a 45 degree angle to the circuit board, but it still had discolored the board where I think it used to be laying almost flat over, based on the discoloration of the board. It looks like it got so hot that it had also lifted the pads and traces on the soldered side a little bit. Being somewhat versed in electronics repair at the component level, I decided to check the rest of the components on that power supply circuit board. I found that most of the smaller E-Caps had failed, or were failing. I replaced all of the caps with quality replacements along with the voltage regulator. This completely solved the buzzing problem I had with the AM radio stations both inside and out in the garage. I also installed a TO-220 heatsink on the voltage regulator, which considerably reduced the heat from the regulator. The repair led me to another problem though and that was the remote stations now not working correctly. I found every single cap (100/6.3) on the remote wire board had high ESR, but within tolerance uF ratings, so I replaced those as well. Problem solved. I now have a functioning Nutone IMA-4406. I guess the point of my comment is to reinforce what you are saying about the transformers being replaced unnecessarily. Now, out of curiosity, I am off to watch some of your other videos that deal with the unit I have. 🙂

Changed out my friend's doorbell transformer today. It did the trick. I don't understand the above rant. They DO go bad at times, but it's always wise to check them with a multimeter before switching it out. It's true the good ol' American transformers from decades ago seldom went bad, but here on the West Coast we are using cheap Chinese parts and let's face it--- they don't last.

Hi Roger: You entirely missed the point of the Video. The Video describes a situation where a homeowner has a 25+ year old Intercom System that has started having a constant loud and pronounced background Hum or Buzz on all of the Stations. The homeowner calls a "professional" (electrician or contractor) who immediately assumes it must be the Transformer. This assumption is made incorrectly (because this "professional" has no qualifications to work on an intercom system) the Transformer is replaced - the problem continues - the "professional" say's "there's nothing else I can do" charges the homeowner and leaves. Nothing has been repaired, the homeowner's wallet is around $100.00 lighter and he is right back to where he started. - That's the point of the Video. This is a common occurrence, I actually spoke with a homeowner on Friday, February 25th 2022 who had a problem with his IMA4406 Intercom. The electrician didn't have the correct NuTone Transformers (18 volts AC @ 78 watts) so he installed 2) 24 Volt AC Transformers Rated @ 20 watts (35% higher voltage with 1/4 of the needed watts). The IMA4406 would not turn on - he said there was nothing else he could do - charge the homeowner $125.00 - left the incorrect Transformers in place - took the NuTone Transformers with him and left. Transformers are very often a casualty of the device they are powering. If the device has a major failure, it will overload the Transformer and ultimately cause it to fail. You correctly diagnosed that your friends doorbell Transformer had failed - I would guess that when you measured the Transformer - if it measured good (correct voltage) you would have moved on to other parts of the chime system. This remedial troubleshooting is what it takes to find the true source of any problem. - Chris

Very sound advice! Ok, my doorbell stopped working. Tested transformer and not voltage. Put in a new transformer - and immediately the chime started buzzing. A tug a war ensued between the chime and the new transformer. The chime got burned out and the new transformer (got a 30VA one!) was left standing. I am pretty sure the old transformer died because a short was developing in the chime. The old transformer didn't just die under normal operation. It was killed by the chime.

Installed a new doorbell and a new multi-level volt transformer, which lasted about a year. It slowly started to fail, then stopped working completely. It showed no voltage on the low end. So I bought a new transformer and wired it exactly as I had it before (I took pics before disassembling the first one) hooked up the new one, and nothing. I measured the voltage on the low end and got nothing. Measured the incoming and had the standard 120v. Ohms were measuring out of parameters on the device, too. Took it back and got a replacement measured the ohms to see if it was good (it was), hooked it up to the incoming power and measured the low end volts and it was showing the appropriate voltage (8/16/24) as per each set up. I had disconnected the door bell and those wires werent touching anything then I hooked up the low end service wires and within a few seconds double checked the voltage and this time it was zilch I disconnected the service wires and the dang tranformer was no longer with the living. I tried checking the service wires for a short and looked at the bell assembly to see if anything looked amise but... should I jist buy a new door bell, wires and transformer at this point?

Hi zander: Based on your description of the events, the Transformer failed only after the low-voltage wires for the Chime were connected. You didn't mention if the Trasnformer became Hot to the touch after connecting the low-voltage wires to it (a classic sign of a overload transfomer). Even if it didn't get Hot - some Transfomers have Fuses in them and an overload will blow the Fuse, causing the secondary side (low-volatge side) to go dead. You also didn't mention if your have any othe types of devices connected to the Chime System, like a WIFI Door Camera (which are common now and often overlooked as a source of problems) Your "Chime System" is made up of 4 basic parts: 1. The Low-Voltage Transformer 2. The Chime 3. The Pushbutton 4. The Wiring that connects everything together Typically, the Chime and the Transfomer will be a casuilty of problems with the Pushbutton and Wiring - A sticking (or very old) Pushbutton will allowing the Chime to stay slightly energized, which causes them to overheat and fail (either electrically or mechanically or both). Of course bad wiring will result in eiher a non-working system (broken wires) or a shorted system (shorted wires) Not knowing more details about your Chime System, makes it difficult to know what's actually going on - but taking a step-by-step approach to troubleshooting will be th ebest approach. A. The Trasnfomer will be new, so that a simple step to complete - install the new Transformer (really should be a 16 Volt AC transformer rated at 30 Watts) measure the voltage without any wires connected - leave it that way for 2 days to verify that it remains wokring B. Remove the Chime and "benchtest" simply by making sure the plungers move freely - then connect it directly to the transformer (on a short piece of test wire) touching 1 terminal with the test wire to act as the "switch" C. Replace the Pushbutton (get something that looks nice) D. Since all of the Wiring will be completely disconnected at this point - throughly and accurately test the wiring for "breaks" and "shorts" - repair or replace any wiring problems When reassembling your Chime System, build it back 1 piece at a time - testing each piece (measuing voltage ~ testing the pushbutton etc.) as you go, to ensure that everything is correct Chris

@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks. The transformer didn't have time to warm up before going dead, so maybe a fuse inside however, I'm not able to open this model without doing some major damage to the casing. I had it set up on the 16v configuration. The chime is digital, but yes, I'll disconnect that and try the steps you mentioned! 👍

If there is no power to the video doorbell and there was a buzzing sound from the chime? Could it actually be the transformer? And meaning no power in the sense the doorbell no longer lights up an rings. I also only had a 16 volt 10 VA an thinking of upgrading to a higher voltage transformer that can support a video doorbell.
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi browngal00: I am unclear on what you're trying to do exactly (not enough detail from you about your project) but I'm guessing that you're trying to install a WIFI Door Camera in place of your original Doorbell Pushbutton - There are lost of details that must be considered when doing this type of installation, which I can't possibly cover in a RU-vid Comment - What I can tell you is (with a fair amount of certainty) your Transformer is not the problem - If the Doorbell worked before you started - you've got something done wrong. You can always call me to discuss all of this - Chris 925-743-8236

With all the times ive heard of people replacing the transformer when the issue is with the device itself i get how you feel, Crhis. When i come across a unit buzzing i immediately assume filter capacitors, an issue with the power supply, or something else. The only time i see it likely being the transformer is if there is no power at all, after checking for incoming voltage of course

Hi Mo Surz: There's no way for me to know what happened, becasue to know, it requires more information. Step 1 is to measure the Transformer and see what voltage it is suppling - this should be done with the camera disconnected. To determine if the Transformer was large enough to power the camera - you need to read the ratings on the Transformer and compare the to the requirements of the camera. - Chris

I changed my mind of replacing the transformer after viewing your video. The door bell is from 1980s and the outer white button part just got worn out and only the small part of white 'button" left, but the door bell still rings. However, it starts having buzzing sound. Sometime the buzzing seems to stop. Do I have to turn off the circuit break before I touch the transformer? The transformer is installed with a hanging wire on the garage wall. I am thinking of replacing the door bell with a wireless doorbell so I don't have to deal with the transformer. However, I still have to cut off the electricity power up the transformer. Any idea what caused the buzzing? Will it cause any harm if I unscrew the transformer without turning off the circuit break? Can I just cut off the wires that connect to the transformer? any advice would be highly appreciated.

Hi steve: Well, maybe. . . If you're measuring the Transformer with the device it's powering (chime - intercom?) disconnected - and you're measuring AC Volts (not DC) and the Transformer is not Hot - the it may be a bad Transformer - Or, it could be that the power (120 volts AC) to the Transformer is missing (tripped circuit breaker - tripped GFI - loose wire) - Chris

Hi Chris, thank you for this video. I have a question. I previously had a Skybell video doorbell (had it for only 4 years) which I had connected to my original Nutone Chimebox which came with the 14-year-old house. It all worked well until the skybell started to misbehave even though it still dinged the chimebox when pressed. It would sometimes ring continuously after its pressed. So, I decided to change the bell and got a lorex 2k wired video doorbell. Since connecting the new doorbell, the chime box has been humming with the 'pin' sort of vibrating constantly. When doorbell button is pressed, it does not hit the plate. I added the chime kit that came with the Lorex and there was no sound or humming either - seemed dead and so I took it out leaving only the original set up. The original chimebox transformer is specified as 16VAC which falls within recommended voltage for the doorbell. I was beginning to wonder if it was the transformer that failed the Skybell and is now failing the lorex but your video is suggesting otherwise...?
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi Worship Mail: Checking the Transformer is fairly easy to do - Before changing anything with this installation, perform a "heat-test" on the Transformer. Simply touch the metal part of the Transformer with your fingers to see how "hot" it is. It will be 1 of 3 possible temperatures - Stone Cold - Slightly Warm to the Touch - Burning Hot. Stone Cold means it isn't being powered, it's basically shut-off (check the 120 volt power to the transformer) - Slightly Warm to the Touch is the normal and expected condition of a properly working Transformer (nothing should need to be done) - Burning Hot means that the Transformer is being overload, usually by the device it's powering. If it remains in the condition for a long period of time, it can become damaged and it may loose its ability to cool itself down. (disconnect the low-voltage wires, wait 2 hours to see if it cools down on its own. If it does cool down, look at the devices it's powering and check the low-voltage wiring for problems. If it does not cool down, replace the transformer (you still have to look for the source of the problem) You state that your Transformer is rated at 16 Volts - have you measured the output to verify it's correct? Transformers have a second rating - Watts (also called VA) A Transformer with too few Watts will not be able to power a device that requires more Watts and it will be easily overload (makes it hot). What is the Watts (VA) rating of your Transformer? What Watts rating does the Camera require? Remember the doorbell will also use some Watts. I would double the Watts of whatever the Camera requires (more Watts is always better. . . ) The vibrating of your Chime means that it's partially turned on (being powered) this is bad. It will cause the coil to over heat and become damaged. Since the Camera is in control of the doorbell - that's probably where the source of the problem is. Many of these Cameras have adjustment setting in their Apps - check to see if it set correctly Chris

My transformer has been buzzing pretty darn loud for the last 25 years or so. Doorbell still works, but I am about ready to get rid of the buzzing... @northsideservicecompany3567

Hi Mili: Your situation is somewhat different, becasue your Transformer is the source of the noise - unlike people who have failed Intercom Equipment, which is the source of their noise. Transformer can have "loose plates" which make up the frame of the Transformer. This is the cause of the noise you hear. I agree with you, I don't like having the Transformer attached to the circuit breaker panel. If you're going to replace the Transformer yourself - at a minimum switch off the main breakers to the house - Chris

In your video you said the only time the transformer should be changed is if it doesn't have the volt/power to operate the new system installed (Ring doorbell for example). Is this correct? That is what I'm facing right now. Everything is hooked up and it now has a buzzing noise and my Ring (doorbell system) will not connect and apparently its because my transformer box is too weak.
@northsideservicecompany3567
@@MzMary801 I am going to make some assumptions about what you're tryin got install - I think you're trying to install a Ring Camera and have it also activate your original Doorbell inside your house. I am also going to assume that the 'buzzing' is coming for the doorbell inside the house. You should not guess about your Transformer being to small - you need to check it (by reading the information that should be on it - ie. 16 volts 10VA (as an example)) to see if it's to small, when compared to what Ring say's it should be) You should stay with a 16 Volt Transformer becasue that's what your Doorbell will need I think that the buzzing from the Doorbell is being cause by not to small of a Transformer, but because the Camera is not installed / connected correctly - Chris

@northsideservicecompany3567 2 года назад
Hi MT: Simply - It depends - If you have to stand right next to the Transformer, with your ear 1" way to hear the buzz, then it's probably ok. If someone walks into the room and says "What's that buzzing noise!!!" then no. Also, is the Transformer hot - like very hot - like to hot to touch for more than 10 seconds - If it is - it may be overloaded by the device it is powering - because the device is failing dramatically. Transformers buzz because the metal laminations that make up the core - expand with heat - allowing the electromagnetic field to create the buzz - It is not dangerous (unless it's extremely hot) just annoying - Chris

@northsideservicecompany3567 2 года назад
Hi Aman: I made this Video because to many times people pay someone for a service call - all they do is replace the Transformer - which is not the actual problem with their Intercom System - Then the Service Person shrugs it off, say's there's nothing more they can do - gets paid (for doing nothing) and leaves. I'm not sure how replacing a Transformer with a new one - with 1/3 the capacity would ever be a good idea - Chris

Hi david: Different NuTone Systems use different Voltage Transformers . There are 20 volt CT transformers - 30 volt transformers, 20 volt transformers - 12 volt transformers - 16 volt transformers - 24 volt transformers - 18 volt transformers - along with a few special multi-tap transformers. Perhaps what you learned was "Oh yeah its probly not a transformer problem" - Chris

NuTone, is it a Scovill?
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi rickysnit: Scoville Industries purchased NuTone in 1968 and owned them until the late 1980's. Many products made during that time were labeled with both the NuTone and Scoville names. Regardless of the name, they are all NuTone products - Chris

thanks friend you saved me money I have a 1936 house but the electricity box had a buzzing sound, I changed the beaker of the doorbell and the sound the same the doorbell sounds good and the button also that I thought what happened the transformer emits vibration and that's what It happens that the electrical box has the sound because my transformer is under the electrical box.

@@carlosyoskar It depends - Disconnect the Low-Voltage Wires from the Transformer - wait for 2 hours and then see if the Transformer is still buzzing. If it isn't buzzing - you may have a Chime / Chime Wiring problem. If it is still buzzing - it's just a noisy Transformer - I find the buzzing annoying, I would replace it - Chris

@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi tiraw: You missed the point of the Video - It's all about when Transformers are replaced as a "guess" for what's wrong - That "guess" is incorrect - The problem remains - the Service Person shrugs the shoulders and walks away - Chris
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi t-raw: In my experience, transformers used in Security Systems (plug-in, wall-wart style) usually have Fused Outputs. The Fuses are mostly not replaceable and when the Transformer is overloaded, the Fuse blows. This is not the case in 99% of all NuTone Transformers used with Intercom Systems. And, again - the point of the Video is all about not guessing the Transformers is the source of every problem, especially with 40+ year old Intercom systems - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 no home security usually just takes over the existing system/transformer. They usually require more amps than a standard doorbell so sometimes the transformer goes out or it doesn’t supply enough power for the camera to work optimally, so the transformer must be replaced

So why does mine hum the min I hook up power to the transformer no wires hooked to it ?
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi Michael: Because you have a Truly Bad Transformer (or at least it's annoying) - Unlike situations I cover in the Video - When people have a Humming or Buzzing Intercom and the Transformer is replaced without any change to the problem (because the transformer is not the cause). The Core Laminations of any Transformer can separate and this exaggerates the natural vibrations that a Transformer has - Chris
