Have you used translation as a tool to learn a language? What resources did you use to do it? Let us know in the comments below! 😉

Hola Erica. En mi opinión tú tienes razón. Me di cuenta muchas veces y actualmente de que yo estaría traduciendo cualquier vídeo que veo y las cosas que escucho en inglés. Cometo errores y me faltan algunos significados para algunos palabras. Creo que es parte del proceso para llegar a la fluidez...

I started learning Spanish through translating every single word, but after a while, the meanings of words I heard or read frequently would be apparent to me instantly. THE MEANINGS, not the translations. And sometimes when I am having a conversation things to say pop into my mind IN SPANISH! (A lot of the time, I still have to translate what I want to say, though) The process of losing the need to translate happens naturally as long as you keep immersing.

Exactly!
@pastorkevintoddlaprediquen854
May I add one more? While learning Spanish I would read a lot (input) and tried as best I could to learn the meaning of words from context. I would use Spanish only dictionary to look up the words and make note of them in my notebook. Then IN SPANISH ask someone to tell me what it meant by painting a mental picture. This meant my ONLY frame of reference for idioms such as "cuando se trata de" was what another Spanish speaker described until they told me, "Yes, you are using it right".

I really appreciate this video. I so dislike when people trying to sell their products in Spanish videos say it’s their way or no way. Or that only their method works. You’re the only one that teaches us to use all tools. Your teaching is very logical and not sounding like a sales pitch.

Girl you don't know how much I needed this video! I'm at about an intermediate level in Chinese now, and I was just telling some of my friends that I feel I can understand quite a bit of what people say when they talk to me in Chinese, but I still have trouble knowing how to converse naturally; I feel I'm always having to translate what I want to say from English. I'll definitely try your tips! I have started having weekly Skype lessons with a Chinese teacher (who only talks to me in Chinese) and video chatting one of my Chinese friends, hopefully I'll feel more comfortable speaking naturally soon!

That is so awesome, Sylvia! First of all, getting to an intermediate level of Chinese is something that blows my mind in and of itself! 😃 So congratulations! Yes, I'm certain that your weekly chats all in Chinese with your teacher and Chinese friends will be most helpful for getting you over that hump. Thanks for sharing!

Erica gives great points. It is so much to it. First you really got to have a passion for the language. Second you have to have a strong verb base. Third create situations in your head, what you see everyday and learn how to speak it. But the thing is there are so many rules you have to learn to speak what you want to say correct. Just heard a guy say "mujeres no me matan" clearly that is a command and it shoukd be "no me maten." Fourth nothing is natural unless you know it, speak it frequently, it becomes unconciuos. There is just so much involved. So keep pushing and learning. I suggest a non credit course with others. Also this youtube and others. Just try to say: I fell, I slipped on the tiles! Good Stuff!

Great video! One problem I'm having is while watching something in Spanish with a lot of information, like a documentary, I find myself often trying to mentally interpret everything into English, even when I understand most of the vocabulary, which causes me to miss what was said next or after a few more sentences. Do you have a strategy to shut down those extra mental gymnastics and to just take in the language? I would say I'm a high intermediate level. Thanks for any tips. You're amazing!
@EricaRayLanguage
@EricaRayLanguage 3 года назад
How interesting. Could you try to refrain from doing that for short time periods (like 2 minutes at a time)? I'm sure it would take a lot of effort at first, but then after the 2 minutes, you relax for a while and let your brain go back to doing whatever it wants for a time. Then you could go back in for another interval? Perhaps in time, you could do longer intervals and eventually train yourself to just relax and listen to the Spanish. :)

Thank u for this video! Bc not long ago I learned that in Spanish it’s not word from word and sometimes it’s likes backwards. That was confusing me. Then I was like well how would I make my own sentences if it’s not word from word like English 😫 ugh
@EricaRayLanguage
@EricaRayLanguage 3 года назад
Yes, it requires a bit of a mental shift to accept that fact but once you do, it's easier to get used to how to translate the message, not always the exact words. Lots of listening, reading, and noticing the structure is key and then translation exercises can help you practice. :)

Please let me know why google translate isnt a good option?
@EricaRayLanguage
@EricaRayLanguage 2 года назад
Well, it would depend on what you're using it for. It's gotten a lot better as far as figuring out the context behind what you're saying, but since it's a machine, it won't always be accurate. You could start with it and then have someone review what you're trying to write or say. But if you're trying to learn to speak Spanish yourself, depending on an automated translator all the time won't help you think for yourself. You'll need a bit of practice trying to formulate your own sentences and then getting corrections from a human :)

You said the speed changed, dumb question from me why does speed matter, hahaha. Do spanish speakers care zbout speed, does the language care? I apologize if i sound condescending, just curious is it really a must to have the pgoper cadence?

@@EricaRayLanguage why does speed matter, you said the speed of your talking changed. If someone speaks spanish slow will it matter vs a person who speaks fast?
@EricaRayLanguage
@EricaRayLanguage 3 года назад
@@jamestateIII My level of fluency increased to the point where I no longer needed to think so much before speaking. That's naturally going to lead to speaking at a faster, more natural pace, rather than speaking in short, choppy sentences due to so much thinking.
