The forkball is such a fun pitch to throw

Mine has no rotation at all. I basically throw a 75mph knuckle ball. I accidentally figured the pitch out. My hand was crushed between a truck and boat a number of years back that cost me the feeling in my middle finger. I started playing ball again when I tried to throw a split finger I didn't realize how deep the ball was tucked in between my fingers because I couldn't feel it. It surprised the hell out of me and ended up being a pitch I used all the time. Happy accident. The only problem with it are passed balls. If I don't know where the pitch is going, the catcher sure as hell doesn't. When you get the occasion kamikaze dive at the plate, its guaranteed to result in a passed ball. Having the knuckling action means you can't ever duplicate the ball's movement from pitch to pitch. That makes it as much of a nightmare for catchers as it does hitters.

Wouldn’t people be able to tell if it’s coming when you lick your hand?

What was the velocity on your forkball (just curious)? You know the vertical drop you would get on it? (Vertical looked any where between 12-15in but it’s hard to tell in the video)

This is what Mike McCormick did in the late 1960s with the Giants. I learned how to throw this at a pitching camp where he appeared in SoCal and demonstrated it. Robert Coello of the Angels and Nathan Eovaldi both have thrown this in recent years.

I noticed that you threw the first forkballs overhand and then with the catcher it was side arm. It seems to break more side arm?

Hey john when i start throwing a 2seam/sinker my elbow starts to bother me but i can throw a 4seam fine. Im a college pitcher and was wondering if it was something mechanical when throwing a 2seam thanks.

Fernando Cruz of the Reds throws a real Forkball, even though most announcers call it a split, it is not! It is damn nasty!

I threw a forkball for 2 years in high school. My teammates couldn't bunt it and it wasn't hit once in a game. Should of threw it more. 15 ft from the plate it fell off the table and would break 2 or 3 feet. Depending on my wrist action, I could break it in as well. Took about a month just to able to throw catch with it but once you get it down, it's awesome. It don't hurt the arm or elbow, either.

That is a hard pitch to throw. Such a variety of pitches to throw as a pitcher. So many. It is an art from what I see.

thats a nasty pitch. Tom Henke used to throw a nasty forkball for the Jays as their closer way back.

Not how I threw my forkball. I threw mine traditional and was even nastier. Index and middle finger behind the seams, push off when releasing. Apply more pressure to the finger you want the ball to break away from. Can make the ball go anywhere you want with nasty movement. If it's hit at all then it's gonna be an earthworm headache!!!

How do I properly throw a change up. A regular change up. I try to throw it but it is just as fast as my fastball

I don't doubt that pitch is hard to hit/catch. However, I don't believe this is the "traditional" forkball, albeit a more common version used nowadays. Traditionally, the fork would have a slow top spin, breaking downward - with an action somewhere between a split (slow back spin) and a curve (fast top spin). Jose Contreras comes to mind. Would love to see a video on the traditional version of the fork, popular in the mid-century as it has fallen out of popularity in modern day baseball.

Hey John I need your honest opinion. I just started pitching and I top out at 72. I’m a sophomore in high school and I’m not very strong and not flexible. Do u think if I increase my strength and my flexibility do u think I can make D1?
