This week I'm making some bowls with tall foot rings. I show cross sections of the forms, discuss various topics, ideas and philosophies about the craft of pottery. I also updated my recording equipment this week, not the mic but I've added some acoustic foam and a pop filter, so please let me know if you can hear any difference in the audio.
Thanks for watching and if you'd like to see what I'm up to everyday, and see more images of finished work, check out my Instagram: / floriangadsby

I throw using a Rohde HMT500 potter's wheel and for the most part use Bison trimming tools.

I learned to throw pottery at the same time as I learned to turn wood on a lathe and they definitely feel very similar. Wood turning is just as enjoyable and satisfying as throwing. I think you would enjoy it. I used the lathe to turn the handles for my silversmithing tools, I can imagine you turning finials or handles for your pots.

I've been watching several wood turning videos lately, and I was thinking the same thing! I'm brand new to pottery, and I wish I had the time and resources to pursue both arts!

Watching the hollowing of the chunky feet is so satisfying. I am ready for a journey to glazing territory!

It was refreshing to see you make something new you’ve never made before. I think the base shapes compliment each other well and I can’t wait to see how they look in black!

I know that angular forms with clear lines are more your thing, but for these in particular the round bases (the almost ball-like one, the houglass like one, and the slightly curved one) look so good! I think it is because they complement the upper section so well. Maybe one day you could try and do a more angular upper form and then the straight or angular bases will look perfect on that

That's a good idea! I do make curved forms but they mainly reside in the bowl world. But these were such a joy to make, the hourglass piece especially. There's lots of room to manoeuvre thankfully. Thanks for watching! 🙌🏼

I really love these pots. I think a tall foot is really stylish which can make it a functional or decorative piece. Can’t wait to see them with the new glaze. 👍

Tall feet are great for hot rice or soups, you then hold the pot by the rim and the bottom of the foot so you don’t touch the heated ceramic.

Mmmmm - I would love to eat ice cream from one of those bowls! My favorite is the one with the round bottom - I hope it looks good with the glaze!

@Florian I really appreciate the detail and comments you make during your videos. There are so many things which you could have left unsaid, but putting all those little thoughts into words really helps explain every little action and purpose so well!

I hope I can afford some of your work someday. Thanks for portraying your artwork throughout the process instead of just the final product. It adds so much more to the intrinsic value for those who care for the work of art, similar to why so many love the works of Bob Ross over so many other landscape oil paintings.

I love trimming because it relies on the skills I learned years ago as a novice wood-turner. It's such a lovely interaction between the object and the crafter to allow the object to dictate when it's finished.

Love these. Thanks for the calming and quiet inspiration. I find the cross section diagrams very very helpful! Question: do you think you could make a video about how you "construct" the actual cross section? Is that something you think about? How do you end up designing and making all the inner corners etc.? Thanks again. Love and gratitude from Tel Aviv!

I used a lathe while I was at Steiner during classes 5 - 8, I believe it has similar features/skills. A large difference is you’re working horizontally on the lathe rather than vertically on the wheel, so all the skills are jumbled into a different orientation. A good brain puzzle haha

Have you ever thought of wheeling throwing trimming tools? I just watched you make those pens and what you said about having beautiful tools makes a huge difference in your craft. Would love to see you make a set of trimming tools one day! I just started learning how to wheel throw and you have been a great help! Thanks for your videos!

The usage of the word ‘turn’ is interesting, considering that a potter’s wheel is effectively a kind of vertical lathe.

I think the two curved bases are far and above the best of them. I might have to turn one for myself. I hope I'll send you pics if I do. They are gorgeous designs. I don't know quite what it is but curves meeting curves with the same proportions is nice.

Check out more RU-vid and you'll see that skills, or at least knowledge, are transferable in all different directions. I'm a leatherworker who find the leather-state of clay fascinating and I dabble in woodwork and metal working. For example I've learned that when using tungsten carbide tools in metal lathes they like higher speeds to create good surface finish.

The circular foot is really satisfying. Do you plan to produce a variety of forms? A collection of bowls with different feet would look great. Have you considered a video about the tools you use? I know you have the Bison vid, and mention a few tools within vids, but I'd love a vid focusing purely on the all the tools you use. I'm new to pottery, and have been making a lot of my tools. It would be valuable to hear your opinions on what you commonly use, how you use them, what you've found essential or timesaving, and what tools have been less than useful

Yet another awesome video! I have a question I’m hoping you’d answer. Did you have to spray the thinner parts with water at all to avoid them from drying too quickly or was the plastic wrap enough to keep everything drying at the same rate?
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 2 года назад
Thank you! Well, on a form like this, that's all made in one part, I don't mind too much as they shouldn't distort too much as they dry, but with handled forms of flatware I'll let them dry out far more slowly, wrapped with plastic and occasionally sprayed if they need it. I guess it really depends on what type of pot it is I'm making.

@@floriangadsby No worries.. I might be wrong, my eyes is probably playing tricks on me.. It doesn't have to be symmetrical. As you often said in your videos, you tolerate any angulations on the clay.. As long as the diagram convey what you are trying to deliver, then it's completely fine.. I like your videos. For me, it is not only calming, but also educating..
