Sure, but ultimately, the mechanics to throw 300ft and 500ft are the same. Eagle McMahon throwing 700 feet isn’t really doing anything different from when he throws 300 feet. It’s just a matter of getting down the proper mechanics, putting them all together, and consistently practicing. If you give up simply because your warmups aren’t the same as his, then you’re never going to be able to throw 500 feet, because you have to throw 200ft before you can throw 500ft.

I’m super glad you get to play disc golf for a living. I hope you thrive. You’re bringing good stuff. I can only play 30 to 36 holes a day. I have to have something to watch that makes me love the sport as much as I did earlier today when I saved a par, saved a bogie, birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, then pars a couple boges, and a double boge on each 18 kept it fun, but nothing to brag about.

So here's my take on stuff to consider! 1. You aren't incorporating momentum too well, you sort of stop your run-up when you go into the plant (probably in part due to 3.) 2. You're trying to work the legs and the arm at the same time. If you look at pros there's a more pronounced delay between the lower body turn and the arm swing. This is actually a really complex one since it's the underlying technique that creates the correct sequence 3. You're pretty far on top of your bracing leg instead of behind it
@mr.wizeguy8995
@mr.wizeguy8995 3 года назад
He turns whole body too much away from target like going backwards when taking steps when It's should be more sideways and only upper body turns when "reach back" . If you look that back leg heel is pointing for target when it should be pointing more side.

I’m probably at 350-375 or so. I may have had a little more distance but I’ve tried to smooth my throw out some and I’m no longer just throwing hyzer flips. So I’ve lost some distance but the shots are more reliable now. Someday I’ll put it altogether 😂
@Nickeeefy

I was at the same stage recently then i started to learn bracing better, a easy thing that helped was to push my body forward with my left leg after the 2nd step in xstep right before planting otherwise u loose the momentum u build from a runup. when fixed this i went from 375 avarage/400 max to like 435 max, also the off axis torque fixed by not rolling the wrist after release.
@Dizzlestick

I honestly think my biggest problem (that also leads to me throwing nose up a lot) is I dont follow through. Because of a major reconstructive surgery on my lower right leg (eventho it was a while ago), I subconsciously wont allow myself to pivot on my right foot when I swing. Im too afraid of slipping off the front of the box/pad or trying to pivot and having my body move but my foot stay still. I also gotta remember that im kinda ancient when it comes to disc golf at 35 lol.

For me personally, the change to 400+ drives was definitely about plant foot and reach-back. Simon Lizotte talks about it quite a bit. When I was able to master a wide rail, far reach back and placing my plant foot much further in front of me, it was a game changer.

@jordanpalmer7799
@jordanpalmer7799 3 года назад
Something I noticed in a lot of top level pros is that they really push into that front leg and try to really straighten it out as they push though. Watch a max distance shot by Simon and you'll see that there is a bit of bend in his front leg as he plants it and then it looks like he is really working to get it close to straight. It's not quite locked most of the time but definitely not extremely bent either.

The brace is what transfers the energy to the disc.
@TM-DGG
@TM-DGG 3 года назад
That's exactly what I was going to say. That brace at the last second is what transfers the energy, so just fixing your follow through to where it goes around your pivot instead of through your pivot will bump distance. Just think about like you're planting your foot on the edge of a cliff, and you really don't want to fall off lol.

Its all about that bracing to hit over 400. Attacking the shot, stop your body from going forward by slamming the heel down and rotate your dingle/slingshot arm around you.
@temkef6124
@temkef6124 3 года назад
Some of the things that helped me throw further is fixing my plant foot, if you look at videos of eagle and paul mcbeth you can see their plant foot is extended pretty far out then when they are starting their drive their left knee drops and their plant foot stays perpendicular to where they are throwing until the disc leaves their hand, which is HARD, but I think thats really all you need to work on. Hips are everything, the left knee dropping when starting the drive is probably one of the most important things about throwing far.

Your videos about learning is something I've unseen before. I found this extremely helpful, since I'm the one who has been stuck within 450-475 ft distance for years. I also know my flaws, but breaking fully my form to get more consistent distance and accuracy is something I've been reluctant to do because of the time it takes. These inspires me to maybe even do a schedule like you have in these videos. I find your every throwing related videos EXTREMELY helpful for EVERYONE. I've never seen progress videos before and your time and effort for these are remarkable. I'm so thankful for it on behalf everyone who is focusing more on improving their game. Okay now to throwing: Every pro has some kind of flaws with their technique, why is that? It's because the best knowledge wasn't there when they've started. They have evolved their own technique to the point where there's no effect on rounding (MANY far throwing pros have this when they're going for controlled max distance). This is what I've been asking alot myself and like to you do as well. I've thrown over 10 years, so is there really an issue with rounding in terms of accuracy and distance? Have I implemented my technique to the point where it doesn't matter, like most of the pros? To the second question if the answer is: Yes -> Don't change it too much, focus on committing the shot and disc selection. Capture alot of shots, know when you throw a great shot, see what you do right and compare it to most of the "bad" shots. Try to get that feeling as much as you can when keeping on training. At this point it's more about your individual physics and movement of the muscles, technique varies to others because of that. Might be more to it also. Okay then if: No -> Change more, take best parts of knowledge available and do the same, implement to your game and body. So take more progress related approach like these videos. Reason for your dipping which makes wobbling: Your elbow is moving different line compared to reachback and pullthrough (when disc starts movement forward and continues until release). Would love to see where you fix this and what it does, since it's pretty easy fix for a short term, but hard to remember on the course though. Other video suggestion I've a huge urge to see from youtuber: Hitting gaps better! This would include footwork and footwork lines on the teepad (notify viewers in what direction your disc wants to go on standard footwork without selecting different footwork line. By footwork line I mean for example starting from right corner, moving towards left corner in teepad etc), stand stills and body positions, release angles and some disc selections Keep up the great work! Absolutely one of my favourite channels, and can't even imagine to typing this kind of text to any other channel

@Tuomas, i would say with those distances what you said and consider your Metrix rating you should focus more putting or up shots because i'm around 400 ft with my drives and i had almost same Metrix rating (before winter weeklies) and there are many holes that i can't reach close enough because 400ft ish drives.

Some discs come out of your hand at a weird angle. Makes us think we threw it bad. It’s really all about the disc. You have to know that disc, and then it seems like it knows you. Day four are you throwing in altra trail shoes? Unless you have super wide feet where they fit snug I would look at trying a pair of shoes that fit tighter and more like as extension of your foot. If you look at Olympic shot put and discus/ hammer throw shoes they’re glued to the feet to make sure there’s as little loss of energy from the ground and through the foot. Ik it sounds minor and silly but with that being where the kinetic chain starts I would try wearing something where you can crank down on the laces to where your foot has zero room to slide around inside or shift around because the upper isn’t that firm/rigid

I'm wondering if the way you lock out your lead (right) leg on your brace is intentional? Wondering if even just a slight amount of bend there after your transfer of power from left leg push off into right leg brace might be helpful. You throw further than me and your release is fantastic I was just a little curious about that one part of your swing. May also help in injury prevention but I know too little about that to really say

Great video, love the daily focus! One thing you might try is to plant your right foot perpendicular to the target rather than pivoting on that foot as you throw. It creates torque that transfers up to your hand. Can't hurt to give it a try. Good luck. Keep up the great videos!

I'm by no means an expert but this is my take on your form. Looks like you're not engaging your hips as much as you could. You can see this because your back leg is kind of "left behind your throw" rather than tucking behind you right knee. This means that you're not getting the maximum rotation, but you are more "pulling the disc in front of you" which a lot of people do. Watch how active the back knee is for the longest throwers out there (Eagle for instance is great at this). You can also increase rotational efficiency by having a more active non-throwing arm. It is also "left behind the throw" and it is of course related to the knee. I like to comparing a normal door against a revolving door, the latter being the more correct way of thinking. Just focusing on the knee or the arm can sometimes work to trick you into getting a better form. But I may be completely wrong...

Great video as always! Love your editing style aswell. I totally agree that sticking to one thing for week to even a month is only way to fix those problems and to find those problems you need slow mo film yourself. From 350 to 400 i got by planting further to left cause i was going too straight so i didnt use my hips. Now my footwork is dialed but I noticed I tend to dip the disc while doing so called reachback and do this stupid swing which makes me to slow down. Keeping disc on same line back to front gave me 40 feet more so im currently sitting at 440. Im still focusing on that but after that i try to approach the front of the tee little bit lean back since it helps to stay balanced and not fall over and lose the power from the feet. Maybe after those I start speeding up. 450 feet is my goal for this year and maybe 500 next.

My drives suck but if I throw a high anny flex it looks like I kind of know what I’m doing. I tell all of my noob friends to try an anhyzer line and they just keep hyzerin it up. I feel like exploiting the flex is like wing chun. what would you say is your biggest tip to getting rid off OAT. i never realized how much OAT i have until i watched this. my max every thrown is 460ft and i’m really trying to find out if it’s my strength holding me back from the 500ft range or something wrong with my form/ throw. i’m only 17 and i’m 6ft 120 so i’m super skinny i really don’t have very much strength at all. hopefully i can get to that 500 range!! your videos are awesome man

If I had a tip for the leg portion it would be look at professional javelin throwers. They use their plant leg to take all the power from the lower body and transfer it to their upper body to gain distance. I used to throw javelin and got decent at it but the thing that helped a lot was learning to plant the right way. Obviously javelin throwers plant their foot pointing forward and doing that in disc golf would not be good but we can take a note from that sport and transfer it. I noticed once I started planting better in my run up for disc golf. I wasn't using my arm as much to get the same distance I had before. So once I had the lower body figured out and was comfortable a full power throw for me went from 300 ft and hurting my arm after 20 throws to 350-75 very easily and comfortably.

Try not to finish too far in front of the tee pad. You want all the energy to go into the disc which will result in you stopping your momentum and the disc flying forward. You may finish with one foot in front of the tee pad but you shouldn’t be falling or jumping forward. Also, when you look at the film when your throwing arm (right arm) comes all around to your backside make sure it goes past your left leg that is still lagging behind your body. That last part is what makes Double G such a good distance thrower, back leg stays behind until the throwing arm finishes all the way behind you.

Overthrow disc golf has a video about the brace that will help you generate power through your legs. Basically its not about pushing off your back leg because you cant do that if its not in the right position to provide rotational force. So what you do is get your feet in the right position and practice snapping your hips through. If you get this down you will then be able to practice charging off that back foot to add additional rotation speed and boom 500'.

You throw 100 feet farther than me but I'm over 50 so... Two things I noticed about your form that Danny has videos on (I think). First, your x-step is almost correct. The upper body should not rotate into the reach-back until the back foot is planted. Until then you should just be walking sideways. You're rotating too early. Second, I think you need to brace harder. Drive everything into the front foot and rotate on your heal (as you do). See slow-mos of Garret Gurthie. He generates so much snap and disc speed and a lot of that, I think, is because of his brace and keeping his body weight behind the front foot. Good luck.

It's my understanding the back leg doesn't really generate power, and if you look at the pros, they aren't really using the back foot to help them push off because that doesn't actually contribute in the manner Paige Pierce explained it, or you trying it. She's not actually relying on it when she throws, either. If you to to the "Spin & Throw Disc Golf" channel and just watch the PP videos she's not using that back leg to push, per se. Not to say it's not involved, but what she explains, and what she does, are not identical. She doesn't actually pull through exactly, either. She pulls to some extent and then catapults the disc away from her with the elbow as a bit of an axis point. It's funny that what a lot of pros teach doesn't exactly line up with what they do. 🙂

I think if you want to throw far, you have to practice good form so much that as you speed up it doesn’t change. You won’t throw 500 ft without runnig up quickly and putting all of your might into it. 500 ft is the max for most pros.
