This video shows exactly how to tie the dropper rig leader assembly that is great for anglers who fish from piers, bridges, and shorelines.
The reason it's a great choice is because it enables you to effectively cover a lot of ground while decreasing the likelihood of getting snagged on the bottom.
And the reason that this specific way to tie the dropper rig is great is because it enables you to quickly and easily switch the sizes of your weights and hooks without having to re-tie any knots!
The quick and easy customization is great because you can adjust your leader to different depths of water or changes in current speed as needed.
Best of all, the entire leader assembly can be done using 1 basic knot so anyone can learn this with ease.

Thanks for sharing this rig ... for years i've used the surgeons knot at the bottom because of the weight, but never to get the line to line union...uni to uni, blood, or albright and others are mainly used...but the surgeons knot it's pretty strong, and with 3 twists even stronger! really nice! as I say: "nunca lo pense" I never think about it...plus the hook stays in a very good angle to the line, not too long and not to short...then again Thanks! Lautaro, from Chile. KEEP ON FISHING!!!

Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. Yes, the surgeon's knot is a very good choice for line to line... it tested out to be stronger than the uni to uni, blood, albright, and all other popular knots except for the FG knot in my testing of it. Just know that if you're using braid, then do a 6 turn surgeon instead of the 3 turn surgeon for mono to mono connections. Here's a link to a test of the surgeon knot strength with various turns in case interested: www.saltstrong.com/articles/surgeons-knot/

I agree that the "dropper loop knot" is a pain to tie. What shocked me most is that this surgeon's knot tested out to be stronger than the dropper look when I put them head to head (won 5 out 5 tests)... I'll never tie a dropper loop knot again.

@Saltstrong

Absolutely! It's the strongest loop knot for tying into the middle of a line that I've tested so far. And if you need more line for the tandem rigs, then you can tie a strand of line to the end of the loops.

Yes, the surgeon's knot is a very good choice for tying braid to mono/fluoro... with braid, just do 6 twists instead of 3 because braid needs more wraps. Here's a post we did showing strength test results for the surgeons knot: www.saltstrong.com/articles/surgeons-knot/

Any tips to standardize 2 loops evenly spaced and same size loop would be appreciated. I did make a peg board and still can't standardize everything. Honestly just about anything. The benefit is that your bait is suspended slightly off the bottom (just however high above the sinker you put it), which is usually a better presentation for bait fishing than just having it lie on the bottom.

Good video, have you ever tested using a figure 8 loop knot to make the loop for the hook as a substitute for the surgeons loop knot. I have heard that the figure 8 loop is stronger than the surgeons loop knot.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 7 лет назад
I tested the surgeon's loop knot against the figure 8 and the surgeon's loop won when used on a fluoro leader. But results on knots often varies due to the line being used so you may very well have heard accurate info based on a test using a different line. And that's why it's very smart to test knots on the lines you use so that you know you make the right choice.

Hello. Have you ever seen circle hooks on a lure, like a minnow hardbait?
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 8 лет назад
I have never seen a circle hook on a hardbait, but I would not recommend using them because circle hooks need more time to slide into the corner of the mouth compared to what a hard bait would allow. A few years back I tied some flies with circle hooks thinking they'd help ensure that not fish gets gut hooked... but I noticed that my hook set ratio plummeted so switched back to J hooks.

@gregh1972
@gregh1972 8 лет назад
Could you use this knot setup for terminal tackle? By that I mean form the loop at the end of a leader (minus the weight and no middle hook) and switch between a plastic/jig or hook for live bait, say under a popping cork. (I mean I know you "could" but would the action and strength be workable?)
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 8 лет назад
Yes, this knot can be used for terminal tackle, but I wouldn't recommend this quick change style for using artificial lures because it'll decrease the amount of action in the water the lure will have plus it could get difficult to pass a bigger lure with multiple hooks through the loop. But there is a way to use the surgeon's loop to allow for lots of action in the water... I'll made a video about exactly how to do that soon.
