I know this was put up almost 5 years ago but I still need to say thanks and thanks again. I learned this knot in a few minutes and practiced a bit after that. GREAT knot, so much quicker and slicker than many other loops I've tried. Thank you again.
I like that the tag end comes out toward the bait. I just added a flouro leader and re-tied my Karashi using this knot. I had it tied straight braid to bait using a Double San Diego Jam and wasn’t getting the action I expected from the bait. I had thought about adding a split ring but didn’t want the added weight to affect the action or buoyancy. I think this knot is my answer. Thanks for the clear and precise tutorial!
Never been good with knots and always had my dad tie mine when I was a kid. Now that my little one is starting to fish I figured I better learn how. Very simple instructions that even a novice such as myself could follow. Thanks.
Glad to see that you enjoyed this loop knot video. Here's a link to see the listing of knots ranked by their strength for each type of knot in case you haven't yet seen it: www.saltstrong.com/articles/fishing-knots/
I started using this knot for all inshore artificials & live baits...and it had immediate positive returns. The loop turns a good bait into a lethal one.
By far the best loop knot tutorial and technique I've seen! Thanks for this! Been having a hard time getting the loop to cinch down to the size I want with other techniques, but it's super easy this way, and seems very sturdy.
I have always used the Loop Knot, and for years, that is pretty much all I tied untill I was about 10 years old and learned others. I use the Loop Knot to this very day including on 8 day long range trips for Tuna. What I like best about this knot is that you have the loop on the mono which allows your bait greater freedom of movement, making it more lively, increasing your chances of being bit. Great knot!
Some call this a "Non-slip loop knot". The way he describes the upside and downside of the loop is cool. You could also look at it like you always pass the tag line back through the side it just came out of. Another note on this knot is that you're just tying a clinch knot on top of an overhand knot... if it helps you to think of it that way.
Thanks so much for this video. I first learned about loopknots from Richard Gene the Fishing Machine. Couldn't remember how to tie and went back to RU-vid and your vid popped up first. It was so quick and to the point and I am truly grateful. The presentation with this knot is incomparable for jigging. My success rate has gone up tremendously. Thanks again.
Excellent multi-purpose knot, thanks for sharing this ! When I was a young kid, my Grandfather (a self-reliant Scotsman) taught me quite a few knots, and paid me a quarter for each one I became proficient with. I`ve spent a lifetime (50+ years) of using those knots to good advantage !
Black Waterdogs Thanks so much for leaving the great comment. How awesome that your grandfather taught you the knots that you've now used for 50+ years! I hope provide that sort of long-lasting teachings to my grandchildren when the time comes. Fish On!
Black Waterdogs : thank GOD for Grandpa's... They had so much wisdom to share... And stories to tell.. today's kids ani't got time to listen to people they video games to play.. thank goodness my 5 year old granddaughter likes to fish and help her pa pa Magic....
Been retired. Took fishing back up again. Forgot this great knot. I have not lost any fish yet on the old knots. But it was close. Great dependable knot. Now I am off fishing with my Okuma. 5 pound test line. Got to give them a chance.
Lefty’s Loop is my favorite and so is Salt Strong 💪 🎣👍 I always refer to your knot videos and I use this same knot along with the Top 5 knots you guys use as well and I fish fresh/salt waters and I flyfish as well. I’m happy for your success and appreciate your skills 👍🙏Thank You 🙏
Fantastic knot. Been tying it in 30# trick fish fluorcarbon. No issues whatsoever. Great video. Works great for gold spoons for redfish. PLEASE continue to post such easy to follow videos on other knots......
My Grandfather always used a loop knot that I, sadly, never asked him how to tie before he passed. The way he did it, was to tie one hook in a loop knot, then a bit further down, tie a second hook on(using a loop knot of course), then at the bottom, he would tie his sinker, using a standard fisherman's knot. I believe the knot in this video is very similar to his, so thank you very much for the help!!
Great knot, especially useful with Clousers. I found it could be made stronger by starting with a double overhead knot instead of the single overhand. My testing was done done with 12# to 20# fluorocarbon. The knot using the single overhand always broke before the double overhand.
Bruce Platusich Hey Bruce, thanks so much for the great suggestion. I'm sure that the doubling at the very start will increase it's breaking strength... I look forward to test it out. Fish On!
Thanks for the great video. Very informative and easy instructions. I forgot how to tie them since it's been months since I went fishing. But I remember now, thanks to your video.
Thank you! I have seen many explanations for this knot, but yours is by far the easiest to follow! No wonder almost half a million people have watched the video!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment on this loop knot video. Some people call it the "Kreh Loop Knot" and others call it the Non-Slip Loop Knot"... no matter the name, it's a great knot to know. Fish On!
not fishing related, but I needed to secure my solar panels which I mounted to some windows with suction cups, because I don't trust them I figured fishing line might be the safest bet as a safety device, especially because I got some fond memories wrestling with some fish in my teens so I know that these thin strings are almost as tough as steel. great knot, easy to learn with this instructional video
I use the canoeman knot cause it's so quick to tie. How do you think it matches up in strength? I have caught 28" reds on it but I also don't crank down too much on my drag, just enough for a good hook set
Yes, the king sling is a solid loop knot. The top reasons I like this one better is because I don't have to thread my lure through a loop (gets tough with lures) and the tag end points back towards the lure with this knot vs. up towards the rod with the King Sling making the KS knot more prone to snag floating debris in the water.
A lot of people don't like videos that are in their opinion too slow. The only thing I had a problem with is lack of contrast between the line and background. But yeah salt strong is definitely becoming a trusted source for fishing technical information and the videos are great in terms of information, clarity and production value.
Calum McRoberts, the chief ghillie on the Meiklour and Isla beat of the Tay in Scotland recommends using this knot when fishing for salmon with mid to large flies. Gives the fly more movement than the regular grinner and tuck I have used in the past. Great knot, easy to understand video!
I just starting getting serious into fishing and ive tried all other videos with different fishing knots and so far yours is the best every other one broke first day and yours has lasted me a week and hopefully it lasts longer thanks for sharing your video
Old vid but thanks. I can remember this easily. But I wonder is this knot your creation?? Is this better than doubling the line and doing an overhand knot with a couple wraps.?
Thanks for your question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z10o83qz2g0.html
This was me last year. I spent 4 days looking up knots for fishing. Still dont really remember too mucb after winter. Ive had a blast every time since I started
I've been using this knot for my spinners. I always had trouble holding the lure and overhand while wrapping the line. I never thought of sliding the loop down to the eye to hold both while I wrapped.
Loved the Video! Really helps to present the lure to the fish naturally. I just have a question about braid to leader knots. I have tried tons of different knots that connect these two lines, but they all seem to either get caught on the eyes of my pole, or while the knot is leaving the eyes of the rod the knot gets frayed after casting a lot. Any knot connecting braid to leader that is made to not get caught on the eyes of my rod? Thank you.
Vero Hero Hey Vero Hero, thanks for making time to leave the nice comment! We're glad to see that you enjoyed this video on the Orvis Loop knot. So far, the best and thinnest knot we've found for tying a braided line to a leader is called the FG knot... here's a link to a detailed review and video of it that we recently published on our site: www.saltstrong.com/articles/fg-knot/. Note: Be sure to subscribe to our website so you can be sure to not miss out on our weekly fishing tips and/or viral fishing videos.
Well Sir, in answer to your question, it depends. Now that recommendation is not just my opinion, but Orvis's also. My choice depends on the weight the knot plays on the terminal end. If I am tying a loop in 20+ to 80, I like the Rapala knot better, for breaking. If its on say 100-200+ chaff leader, connected to a tarpon fly, and the knot even at half strength, is well above the line class, I use the Kreh/non slip, (easier & more compact). If I am going to tie the resulting loop to a leader or another heavier line, where the knot is the weak link, then I will use a Binini. Hope that helps...nice video! And remember...lubrication when dressing/tightening these knots is key to their strength.
Thanks to your "lesson," I now have a terrific, quick loop knot in my arsenal. Thank you VERY much. One question: Once I've run the tag end of the line through the eye of the hook/lure and back through the "downward" side of the overhand loop, does it matter whether I start my wraps OVER the main line or UNDER it? I find myself wondering whether the direction affects the strength of the Cray Loop. Speaking of curiosity, I'm a bit puzzled why you made two virtually identical versions of these instructions, although the camera is just a bit closer to the know in the hook-only one. They're both good!
It's been my favorite knot, line to lure, for years. Never broke, never slipped. The tag end is downward towards the lure so it never snags on anything during retrieval. Gives the lure plenty of extra action too. I fish strictly salt water.
D Clayton Thanks so much for making time to leave this nice comment! Yes, this loop knot is extremely effective for saltwater fishing. This video helped me out allot. I new how to tie this knot before but trying to tie it the way i tied it was harder than this way. This knot is allot easier than the way i yous to do 👍👍.
I use the perfection loop always, works with floucarbon and wire, any type of leader. If it is seatrout, bass, cod or northern pike, this just does the job 💪
NaveganteBOG With 30 lb Ande flourocarbon, it normally broke in the 20 to 23 lb range... here's a link to see how it compared to other popular knots: www.saltstrong.com/articles/best-loop-knot-for-fluorocarbon-leader/.
Just lost a monster of a fish using this. Upon retrieving it a small portion of my leader was still left on my DOA float. It looks like the knot over tightened and actually caused the leader to eat through itself. Any recommendations?
All loop knots are slightly less strong than a snug knot, so the loop knot will most likely be your weakest link. If the knot broke, then the only thing I could recommend is to lighten up on your drag (the Rapala knot is slightly stronger, but still will be weaker than a snug knot).
hi i always used this knot, when i did mt testing along time ago, i think i found ,that you do the final return of the tag end back through the knot on either side of the overhand and it didnt make a difference after your 3 turns , so basically 3 turns and back through either side
Dennis Brown Since the weight can weaken a knot, I typically use a snug knot in that instance for the added strength. Here's a link to my favorite snug knot called the Orvis Knot: www.saltstrong.com/articles/orvis-knot/.
