Congratulations, you are one of the very few tyers on youtube who twists peacock herl around the tying thread to improve strength and durability in the fly, which in my opinion is essential. Excellent video!!

Thank you very much. It definitely helps, can't remember where I learnt it but it's been very handy.

A very nice tie of a great little nymph. C3 patterns are hard to beat so looking forward to a 101 or something similar. Thanks from Gisborne.

Thanks, I'll look into the 101 again. I did a version of the 101 in the past but I didn't have the right materials. Need to pick some up and get the right materials then I will have another go.

An excellent little pattern, I bought one in Taupo but didn't get to use it there but I did get to use here in Tasmania on Penstock Lagoon to great success. Now I know how to tie it I will have to give it a go. Thanks for sharing

I have done a version of the 101 but tbh it wasn't very good. Sounds like it's time for a new video and better tie. Keep an eye out for it.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing I tied one that looked similar, but didn't do so well on it on the Madison River in Montana. I normally use Pat's Rubber Legs for a stone fly there, which worked really well in the past, but not this year for some reason. Here's a version by Lance Egan, who's a member of the US Fly Fishing competition team: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-09sUi0abjlY.html I suspect it would work in New Zealand, though you may need to use a different chenille ( e.g. solid brown ).
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 3 года назад
@@schmoonkie It looks like a great fly. I can see it working very well on a few of the bigger central North Island rivers. Easy pattern to vary the colours too until you find what works. Thanks for sharing.

G'day mate, well done on a clear tutorial. A couple of things: I don't think you need the background music on the vid. Some of the all time great tying vids, by the likes of Oliver Edwards, are just him and a quiet study; and second, I would be careful with those Kamasan 110 grub hooks - a number of years ago I tied some Kamasan grub style flies on those hooks (pretty sure it was that particular one) and found they straighten without much pressure. My recollection is they are a light gauge wire and don't seem up to NZ conditions - at least at Taupo. I went with the Black Magic G series and never looked back.
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback, always appreciated. I will see how I go without the music, I might try dropping it in the next vid coming out Friday this week. I think I have a good enough mic now not to need the music to cover up the background noise I had problems with before. It will be interesting to see what people say if I drop it completely. I am also using Kumho grub hooks from I Love Fly Fishing now. I have not had any issues with them so far and fished the whole Taupo winter season with them. I used to use the Blackmagic ones in the past as well and I agree they are very good. I use the ILFF hooks in this vid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1WdK--N4Cf4.html if you want to have a look.

Thank you. Generally I fish size 14 as a point fly or dropper under a dry. Sometimes size 12 for a heavier version

Awesome video. Could you point me to the flash you used for the legs on this fly? Also would be great if you could do some other C3 flies, habanero, prince UV etc. They are such killer patterns. Keep up the videos!
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 года назад
Thanks, Mike, appreciate your kind comments. I believe the flash is called crystal flash and I think the colour for this was pearl or white. The flash is stiff with a slight twist in the fibers. Hope that helps. iloveflyfishing.kiwi/product/white-holographic-crystal-flash/

Thanks for your video. One question: doesn't the original fly use red wire for ribbing? The enlarged image at the site below seems to show that: www.tauporodandtackle.co.nz/c3-flies/1182-c3-pole-position.html?search_query=pole+position&results=1 ... and also here: www.category3flycompany.com/product-page/pole-position
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 3 года назад
I think so yes. Like I metion at the start this is just my version of it tied with the materials I have. Unfortunately I don't have their actual recipe of the fly.
@schmoonkie
@schmoonkie 3 года назад
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing I meant no criticism. I thought that perhaps you had a fly from C3 and could look at it to check the color of the wire. Your imitation looked good to me. In the past I copied productive flies with a picture only or a specimen I got from a store. The final "word" comes from the fish. If they take your fly consistently, you have a winner... :-)
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 3 года назад
@@schmoonkie No worries. I actually did them from the photos. I had a hard time finding the C3 flies in shops here at the time. They were only around Taupo shops for a while but I think Hunting & Fishing near me has them now. I have been meaning to re-do all my C3 vids as I did them all off the pictures with limited materials. My 101 one was especially bad :) They have added some new cool ones which I want to do as well like the Habanero. Thanks for watching and keep an eye out for more C3 ones in the future.
