In this video I show you how to tie a bead head flashback PHEASANT TAIL NYMPH. The flashback pheasant tail is an iconic nymph and should really be in every fly box. I find it very good underneath a dry fly as a dropper or as the point fly in a two nymph rig. It's really popular because it is so effective.

Materials:
Bead: 2.5mm slotted tungsten in black or gold
Hook: Size 14 Kumho barbed nymph hook
Thread: 8/0 black or brown
Rib: Small copper wire
Body: Pheasant tail
Thorax: Peacock herl
Wing case: Any flash material of your choice
Optional: Thick UV resin over wing case

Pheasant tail greatest nymph ever 1st fly I ever fished and pretty sure I’ve used 1 every time ever been on a river it imitates practically everything.

You need to get yourself finer pointed scissors, it will make your life a lot easier. I got hooked on the Hare and copper, my local brook trout love the bug. It's late spring here in Connecticut, which is in the Northeastern part of the United States, aka New England. I like quick to tie fishing flies myself. I like to bang out 6 to 12 in an hour or less.

I certainly need to get some new scissors, the ones I have are indeed rather clumsy. The hare and copper and pheasant tail combo has accounted for countless fish for me. Such great patterns. Enjoy spring and summer. It's getting cold here in NZ now and I just did some of my first winter fishing the last couple of days. Different but still lots of fun.

From memory the flashback on this one is made of a product called fiah scales which is cut into about 2mm wide strips. Any flat 2mm wide pearl flash should work. I source most of my materials from www.iloveflyfishing.kiwi. The fish scales were from another local shop but they should have something similar provided you are based in NZ or Australia.

Thanks Dan. I am using a Stone Creek rotary vice provided to me by I Love Fly Fishing. It's my first rotary vice, so I really don't have any previous comparison. I am really enjoying the rotary function. Once you understand how to use it, it makea a lot of things much easier. The only con so far is that I needed to lubricate it at the start as it had a bit of a creek when turned. Hope that helps.
