The best scud patterns mimic the profile, and size of the naturals, plus they have an element of flash and mobility to stand out from the rest of the scuds. Coupled with a brisk 2-3-inch strip pause retrieve my Mirage Soft Hackle Scud has performed whenever I find fish focused on scuds.
In ideal conditions, scuds can be present in overwhelming numbers that can demoralize fly fishers. I designed my Mirage Soft Hackle Scud to excel in these conditions.

Hi Dale, Most of us don’t. Scuds don’t seem to get the respect and recognition that other patterns do. We should all definitely fish them more often. Cheers, Phil.

Phil, this is a great pattern, thanks for sharing. I could also see a variant of this with a black bead. It would make a great caddis pupa imitation.

I really like the look of this scud Phil. Do you find it fishes as well without the soft hackle? Thank you for sharing another fine pattern and have a great season!

Hi Glen, I am pleased to hear that you like this pattern. You could tie it without the soft hackle. I just like the additional movement it provides while suggesting the front legs of a scud. Cheers, Phil
