Nice video. Very good information, but I'm learning my new unit. How and where do you find all of these settings you talk about changing ? Would have been good if you showed a unit and changing it on the unit to see where and how. Thanks
Thank you Phil. I just picked up a Helix 7 Si G4 to replace my old 698. I learned a lot, going to have to watch this a couple times. I never thought of using the zoom mode, and always had my scroll speed set slow since I was in a pontoon boat. I hope you do a few more of these on the mapping, as well as down and side imaging.
“Transducer placement is key”…but he never explained how to do it. Phil mentioned briefly it should be on the starboard side of the boat because of the way the prop spins. Is that correct?
Very Nice!...I recall last spring dropping a similar experimental red butt purple/blue rib chironomid in 43 ft water & rewarded with instant success, so after destroying the few patterns I had & a great day , I was sure to tie up a few at Base Camp . Of course fish turned right off the following day with some unstable weather, but "Thats Fishin" I now add a coat of Sally Hansons over my Blue Light Cure.
Hi, I am pleased to hear you enjoyed the video. I have yet to tie this pattern to larger sizes, but there is no reason why it wouldn't work. When using balanced flies for stillwaters, I try not to make them too heavy as they become challenging to cast with the slender, level leaders we use. Cheers, Phil
I use my boat mostly for kokanee salmon fishing so when I'm locating fish using a wide scan would be beneficial but sometimes when I run it just seems like I'm not picking up fish on my screen. I also run a smaller Garmin at the back of the boat so I'm not always kicking my neck to see what I'm marking it seems like my Garmin marks more fish than the helix 7. What's the best way to set this up for kokanee trolling.

I live in Northern BC, I have Helix 9 and a zero lines card. I know there is no the Lake Master cards for our part of Canada. Does the Navionics maps work with Humminbird
Excellent presentation and valuable information from Andrew. I have been using a Lowrance unit for the past season that has all the features of your Hummingbird unit but clearly have not been using it to it’s full potential. It’s great see what these units can do for a stillwater fly fisherman, so many of the instructional videos are geared towards bass fishing and to actually see chironomids showing up on the screen is amazing Hope there will be more to come covering down and side imaging
It will if there are fish below passing through the cone. In 6’ of water the cone only maps a 6’ circle in a low a frequency setting. In high frequency it would be an even smaller circle, 2’. You also have to factor in that a fish would be off the bottom further decreasing the “circle of view” within the cone. Side scan can be used to mark fish off to the side as can the newer live imaging sonar. Cheers, Phil
Hi Phil, I tried to replicate this pattern but for the life of me I cant seem to get any 1/8 head turner past the hook bend of a size 10 Daiichi 4647...Do you have any tips? Thank you!
Hi, I use the Tungsten Head Turners from Canadian Llama (See the link in the video description). I have never had an issue get them on either the 4647 or 4640 jig hooks. Make sure you debarb the hook first. I use 7/64” on #12’s and 1/8” on #10’s. Cheers, Phil.
Thanks for doing this. Really struggling to see fish on my SI so looking forward to the next version with Side Imaging. Helix 5 G2 SI GPS unit. As a side note I've found that in AutoChart, if travelling too fast (over 10Kph) you can develop issues with mapping, at 10kph mapping works great. If that happens it is possible to "repair" the data via the unit itself, unless you've got a damaged motherboard (mine still works on most issues but no longer creates marks)
Your Helix 5 is very similar to the Helix 7. the same tips would apply. Certain adjustments may be in different locations but 90 % is the same. Cheers, Phil
Hey Phil, Great video. I just moved to the Elk Valley. Looking forward to hooking up on some of these behemoths. Oh, and the West Slope Cutties as well!
Really good video. So many anglers either don't or aren't able to have multiple rods and reels with specialty lines. Would you consider a video of using less expensive options for different styles of presentations. I have just bought amsink tip to use with floating line for dredging retrieves. Although perhaps not as finesse as the sinking line you used, i believe (insert hope here) that I can replicate presentations to some level of replication tomwhat youmwere doing. Also mess8ng about with some different leader options for chironomid fishing. The very short butt section with straight mono to het the fly straight down works, but to minimize leaders, have found using a 9mfoot standard taper with a micro swivel and 5 foot of tippet works fine to about 10 feet and adding micro shot for deeper presentation has enabled longer casts...with challenges. Thank you for your videos as they are to the point and effective. Some videos talking about budget options and suggestions for us cheap buggers would be appreciated. Thanks again.
Thanks Phil for the great patterns and the instruction. I appreciate the way you explain what to do, how to do it, and why. As a relatively new tier I find many of the videos I watch are just that--watching what someone does without fully understanding exactly how or why. Little things count.
Thanks for the kind words. I am pleased to hear you find my videos helpful and that you are enjoying them. It’s good to know I appear to be on the right track. Cheers, Phil
Hey Phil , loved the video on your boat great setup, can you advise me where I can find one of the magnet transducer mounts for my boat , I have an aluminum 1448 Jon Boat and I really don't want to drill any holes in my hull or glue anything to it, again nice boat !!!
Hi, the magnetic transducer mounts are game changers, as I didn't want to drill any holes below the water line either. You can get these from Fish Finder Mounts, www.fishfindermounts.com/. I also did a video on my channel focused on the transducer mounts and the other fish finder products they offer and that I use. Here is the link to the video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NgRUmZK-KOk.htmlsi=QWtKfSSwxdyVYCTx. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. Cheers, Phil
Hi Gerry, I was just being a bit creative with this pattern's name. Although this is a leech pattern, it has performed well for me when trout are feeding on zooplankton, such as Daphnia, when tied in colours that approximate that of the zooplankton, such as this bright green version. Much in the same way we use similar coloured Blobs. Cheers, Phil
Hello Phil, here from the UK, just dropped on your video and I like the twist you put on the Marabou for the body. I've never thought of doing that and it makes the fly so much more bug like. I am definitely going to give these a go. They look the business. You explained the process very well and simple to follow. So thank you very much. I will let you know if I have success out on the still waters, Kind Regards Alan
Thanks Alan, I am pleased to hear you enjoyed my video and found it helpful. This is a simple pattern that still works as well today as I did when it was first developed over 30 years ago. Cheers, Phil.
After it gets swamped on the take……Say “ God Save The Queen” and then set the hook lol…. How do I know? Too many misses during the excitement of it all.
