This is an instructional video on how I tie a Skittles bomber pattern for Atlantic Salmon and Brook Trout. This pattern is very popular in Newfoundland for targeting Atlantic Salmon in our rivers. I hope you enjoy!!
Chris- wow! The whole time I'm watching this, I'm wondering how in the heck you're going to get this body trimmed as neat as the fly in your thumbnail. That scissor work was impressive! And thanks to FlyTyer1948 for sending me the link to this one. Well done my friend! Cheers. -Matt
What a nice looking bomber, & it’s doubly great that it’s effective at attracting fish. As I commented on an earlier video, you do a great job of packing the hair tightly without appearing to use a lot of effort. Much respect. It was always a real effort for me. I’m going to share this video with a friend of mine in Iceland who also posts videos on RU-vid. He’s a tyer who also guides for salmon & trout, & I think he would be interested in seeing the flies you use in Newfoundland compared to his for Iceland. His channel is Ivars Fly Workshop. His specialty is Icelandic patterns, but he covers a lot of European & American patterns too. Have you considered posting more videos on Global Fly Fisher? I could only find one of your videos there, & I’m guessing it was submitted by Partridge. It might increase your number of viewers. Is there a way I can contact you by email? I tried internet search, but couldn’t find your email. Martin Joergensen owns & edits GFF is a great guy, he welcomes submissions of good videos & welcomes unpublished text articles. This would be a good one to submit. Re: our previous comments about my Regal. I sent it off to them & am waiting to get it back. They said they thought my vendor sent me the wrong version. I’m carrying on with my old Regal which is likely older than you may be. ;-) Be well & tight lines, Bob
Thanks i appreciate it!! For the brand i really like using Whiting. No one else can really touch the genetics of their birds. Unfortunately it is becoming very hard to find hackle from whiting that is sized large enough for bombers. Now i usually just look for anything from Whiting, Metz or Ewing that is big enough for my needs. You really need to look at saddle in hand or trust the shop your ordering from to size it to your needs.
@newfoundlandflyfisher thank you! That is kinda what I thought, as many hackles (especially saddles) seem to be #12 or smaller. One other quick question if you don't mind? What hook do you recommend for the green machine (seems commercially tied on a heavy down eye "nymph" hook? Thanks for your time, and gonna watch some more vids right now!
