Without getting into the specifics, I'll say that even with the small volume that I produce, I easily cover my expenses, overhead, and time. That likely won't be the case when you're starting out and it'll take time to build both your customer base and find methods to increase your production speed; but, I know *many* people that either use tie dye as a side business for extra income or produce tie dye for their full-time income. My "real" business is sporadic and somewhat seasonal; so, tie dye fits in nicely as something that I can work on during the days where I don't have any "real" business. :) Best wishes if you choose to make a business of it!

While I make a few hundred shirts a year, I offer only a few for sale. The majority are for myself and my family. It all started as a way to have inexpensive t-shirts to wear. Quality blank/white t-shirts (in small bulk quantities) are about $2.15/shirt and powdered dye is $10-$20 per pound. So, the finished cost is typically less than $3.25 per shirt -- far less than you'd pay for any commercially available t-shirt. Just start with a few colors and expand over time. You'll have dozens of colors after a few years - with enough t-shirts to wear a new design almost every day. ;)

From whom do you buy your dyes? I've already had someone ask if I would make them one, and someone else who said I should sell them, but I've gone down the 'business' road too many times and been sorry (mainly because of the taxes hassle, and once you do something 'fun' for profit, it's work!! - not as fun! Also wanted to ask you what the advantage of doing the ice dying is over wet dye? Thanks!

I buy most of my dyes from: www.dharmatrading.com. But, I know many people love to work with Custom Colors and I may switch to them in the next few months. With liquid dye, the colors bleed together to form new colors; but, with powdered dye, the different dyes not only bleed together but they split into their own component dye colors leading to a greater depth in the final design. With that additional depth, you sacrifice quite a bit of control due to the splitting of the component colors not being fully reproducible.

I'm more of an imperfect perfectionist. Some things I'll work until they're perfect and other things I'm perfectly fine with the least effort. ;)

Let me stress that I *loathe* temps above 65F - so, having lived here all my life where summers are 105F+ has been unpleasant. :)

1) 100% Cotton ALWAYS! Blends will result in muted/pastel colors for 90/10 - 70/30 blends and little to no dye bonding for 50/50 or lower blends. 2) The actual time for each process of a design depends on the specific design; but, for this specific design: about 5-7 minutes to fold/tie, about 5-6 minutes to dye/ice each side, about 3 hours for the ice to melt on each side (varies greatly depending on the temperature), another 12-18 hour wait after the ice melts on the second side, about 10 minutes for the in-sink wash-out, and then a couple of standard (hot) wash with extra rinse cycles in the washing machine. So, all-in, about 24-36 hours start-to-finish for most of my tie dyed shirts. 3) I buy large sheets of cardboard from uline.com and strip those down into 2-3" wide strips. But, you can tape strips you cut from boxes if you don't have access to larger sheets of cardboard. 4) The in-sink rinses are cold to strip the un-bonded dye from the shirts and then hot. The shirts are then run through two hot cycles (with an extra rinse) in the washing machine. For me, this results in a shirt that doesn't bleed so I can toss them in with the regular laundry after that point. But, it's a very good idea to hand wash your own designs after the washing machine cycles to be sure all the un-bonded dye has been removed before you start tossing the dyed shirts in with your regular laundry.

You need to find Procion Dye. It doesn't require heat and bonds with natural fiber material as long as the material is soaked/treated with soda ash. Any of the designs can be liquid dyed instead of ice dyed. The colors won't split with liquid dye; but, the overall pattern will be the same.

Ice allows you to split the powdered dyes into their component colors vs. the solid color of a liquid dye. El hielo le permite dividir los tintes en polvo en sus colores componentes frente al color sólido de un tinte líquido.

It depends on how much bleed you want as well as "white lines". The tighter the sinew, the less dye will bond.

The dye is Procion Fiber Reactive Dye from www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html The soda ash that the fabric soaks in prior to the dye being added allows the Procion dye to bond with the fabric. The wait time is really up to you - if you want to wait several days, you can and it will typically increase the amount of dye that bonds with the fabric as long as the fabric stays damp. The warmer the surrounding temperature, the shorter the required wait time. But, I still try to wait *at least* 12-18 hours after the dye process.

I usually do not. I either use a similar color or a contrasting color to increase the depth of colors available in the final design.

While liquid dye will mix with nearby dye colors, ice dyeing allows the powdered dye to split into its' component colors resulting in greater color depth and a look that can't be re-created with liquids without mixing up dozens of dyes. I know the overwhelming majority of viewers really like this design; but, the video was almost tossed because it's not the style I prefer. Currently, it's my second most popular video and all the feedback from it has taught me to post almost every video - regardless of my feelings towards the results and let each individual viewer decide if it's a vision or warning. :)

The soda ash is still in the shirt while it's being dyed. After it's soaked in soda ash, I run the washing machine on the spin cycle only to remove the majority of the excess soda ash water leaving the shirt damp with soda ash.
