Hello all Blog del Runner followers.
As many of you have asked me, today we are going to see how to tie our huarache sandals using leather laces the Tahumara way.
Tying your huaraches with leather laces provides a better adjustment, more security, durability and autonomy.
In a previous video I explained how to change commercial huarache laces for handmade leather laces.
Before showing you several huarache lacing styles I have used, I am going to explain how to pass the laces through the sole.
This is how to put the laces to your huarache sandals: The cord comes through the forefoot hole, then goes through the inner side, comes around by the outside, it surrounds the heel and then it comes in through the inside again, coming back by the outside and leaving the cord ready to be tied to the lower leg.
Lets make the Tarahumara lacing, which is the most frequent and common. We leave this side a little bit loose and we start with the first turn, not too tight, then the second turn... and in the third turn we are going to tie the end of the cord to this side.
A possible drawback of this lacing style is that the rear cord may get loose more easily.
This is a variation of the previous lacing style. We do the same thing. We pass the cord through the upper middle side. We give it one turn, two turns and before making the final knot, we pass the cord by this side. This way we manage to keep this part always up. And then we make the knot.
This is a personal variation I made of the traditional style, to achieve a better fastening of the rear side.
Another variation of the previous style is this one. We pass it through the upper middle side of the cord. We take it to the rear cord to surround it so that it doesn't fall down. We give it a first turn, then a second turn and now we take it around this same lower part. We get it to the middle part. We pass it below it and then we make the knot here.
This is another personal variation which provides more fastening between the foot and the huarache sandal, to be use in very technical runs.
To tie up your huaraches with this lacing system, which leaves the feet really free: We take the cord. Bring it to the ankle area. We give it a turn. Give it a second turn, not too tight, so that it doesn't stretch too much. On the third turn we take it down to the rising part of the cord. Then we give it a second turn and make the knot. The excess of cord can either be left like that or we can make a small knot so it doesn't hang.
This traditional style is my favorite because it is really comfortable and it provides good rear fastening.
