So, if your going for trout hooks, the lack of the flat eye is increasing flexibility of the loop (which in case of trout twisting during the fight is more important than the strength) and still the glued and UV cured connection is stronger than the loop itself. However if your plan is to fish for different stronger species I would suggest to leave the flat eye on to prevent slippage at heavy loads.

I personally leave hooks untouched because I'm a little bit nervous about cutting a piece of metal like that: could damage the rest of the structure and expose a sharp edge. I tie assist hooks on my lures directly without a ring which allows for a slightly longer braid and that's it. The braid can twist without issue and it makes the lure totally silent although it's less convenient if you are to change hooks often (as you can prepare them in advance if you're using a ring connection). I'm extremely happy with this technique so far. It's a shame that so many trout lures are still shipped with treble hooks, there's really no good reason to continue fishing with those IMO 😕

@@FartsOnMars yeah, the silent connection 😉 I came out to the same conclusion lately that it may help in my pressured waters. I do use it with bigger trebles (not for trout) I found some tutorial about "braid split rings" so I just tie them like that 😉

I believe the damage to the line is unavoidable 🤔 30lb fly line backing is my go to choice - perfect balance between strength and flexibility. I experimented with dedicated assist hook line - is way stronger but not so supple - good for hooks size #6 and up

@@coretan6749 I think it should be fine, just the waxy part... I'm not sure if it wouldn't prevent the super glue to sip through the thread wraps 🤔 so don't remove the flat part, or the eye of the hook, like I did, to prevent it from slipping

Those in the video are #8 colmic competition carp hooks. However now I'm using dedicated barbless Gamakatsu (the ones on the thumbnail photo) 😉
