In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Brady ties The Atomic Stone!
"This large Stonefly Nymph is one of my favorites! It is dark and heavy and brings a lot of fish to the net. This Atomic Stone is a tricked-out version of the Kauffman's stone created by Brian Hudspeth, an Umpqua Feather Merchants tyer out of the Pacific Northwest. Our version is altered slightly but still fairly true to his design. His addition of underbody weight and gills really make this pattern perform. The time and effort to tie this bug is well worth it! The Atomic Stone can be tied in sizes ranging from 04 down to 12 and is effective on any waterway where stoneflies are present. You may think of a large stonefly like this to be a summertime nymph but don’t be afraid to rig one on during the winter months. It is an excellent lead fly option that helps your rig find depth and turns a lot of opportunistic trout."

Nice stonefly. Loved the way you packed tons of weight to it. It’ll be great in the deep fast water. 🍻

I believe the original pattern uses hackle stems for the antennae

Awesome pattern! As a new tier, I’m definitely gonna add some to my toolbox but with my bad back, I’ll have to prep well in advance for the extra tying time involved. Mega Thx again !!!

Nice tie! I love heavy flies for fast runs. I’d almost be afraid to fish something I had this much time tying, however.

Класс конечно, а если ещё на лапках завязать узелки, получится более реалестичней.

Artistic tie! Don't know if I want to expend that much time, that much weight on a stone that will have a tendency to hang up, maybe modify with a hook that would ride up through the drift. BTW - noticed an extended shaft on your Mongoose vise, are they available retail, or is this a homemade modification? 970trout

Thanks for watching our video! As a matter of fact, this fly will be riding hook point up due to the weight, here's a great article from Domenick at TroutBitten on the subject: troutbitten.com/2020/03/15/nymph-hook-inversion-and-the-myth-of-the-jig-hook/ - According to Brady (the tyer), the extension on the vise is an old accessory from TyWheel. Not something that we currently have but it may be available with some internet scouring. Hope this helps!

Public Service Announcement: Avoid hitting yourself in the back of the head with this one... rendering one's self unconscious while near or in water may be hazardous to your health. :)
