EP Mantis Shrimp Blog-Post & Recipe:
In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Max ties the EP Mantis Shrimp ! The EP Mantis Shrimp is a must have fly on the flats. Bonefish, Baby Tarpon, Permit, and Snook will all want a piece of this tasty morsel. While this fly has quite a few ingredients, it is worth the time. I recommend tying this fly in a variety of different sizes and weights with an emphasis on the weight. Tie some with the bead, some with lead, and some with brass. The weight of the fly will directly impact the scenario you are fishing and presentation you are trying to mimic.

Flash - Krystal Flash Black Olive

What size mono would you recommend for making the eyes?

Depending on the size of the fly we would recommend between 30 lb-60 lb.

Why does that hook have 3 barbs?

Hey Will, the hook is an Umpqua XS533 Triple Micro Barb Hook. It's designed for saltwater fishing. You can pinch or flatten the barbs before fishing it. My guess is that Max was using this hook more for hook shape and availability over the number of barbs.

@@AvidMax I'm not even asking regarding the pattern. I just don't understand the design of the hook itself, how this would be of any use. Bill Dance once said something about the difference between hook gauges being like trying to pierce something with the point of a needle vs the eye. Same is true of barbs vs barbless, and having 3 barbs just seems like it would inhibit a hookset more than it would secure one. I'm not mad or anything, it just confuses me.

@@willwailes9298 as I recall barbs are to keep bait on, not fish, so they have no place in fly fishing ..........

The triple micro barb is pretty aggressive, I imagine Max was using this hook more for hook shape and availability rather than the amount of barbs. .....And Thank You! We like this fly too! Hope

Ridiculous hook...over 30 weeks of bonefishing and permit fishing in 9 islands in the Bahamas ,the keys and seven other countries. If your a catch and release fisherman ..that thing is a sin

Lee, we agree. In all honesty we would fish this pattern with this hook www.avidmax.com/umpqua-tiemco-tmc-800s-fly-tying-hooks/ and pinch the barb. We used this hook to highlight it as a new offering from the X-Series from Umpqua but would NOT advise it for catch and release fishing.

No sir, we wouldn't fish this hook, we would fish a much more practical hook such as the TMC 800S like the one tagged in our comment to you. Also, we would never keep Bonefish or Permit, or any fish that faces as much adversity as they due in terms of their long-term viability as a species and ecosystem.
