As a kayaking instructor I created this series of videos on knots to introduce members of our club Sligo Kayak Club (Sligo, Ireland), and any anyone else who may be interested, to rope work.
This short video will demonstrate three common methods for joining ropes together using what are called 'bends'. We will also very briefly discuss the merits of each method.
The knots/bends covered in this video include:
1. Square (or Reef) Knot
2. Sheet Bend
3. Zeppelin Bend
Another common method of joining ropes, the Fishermans knots, will be covered in a separate video.
Any gauge of rope or cord will be sufficient for training purposes but it's best to use at least 2' (60cm) of length. For the sheet bend I'd suggest testing it with two very different gaues of rope.
Feedback, comments, questions are all welcomed.
Please excuse the quality of this one-take, recording!
DISCLAIMER: The information in this video has been presented in good faith, for training purposes only. While much effort has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the information presented, no responsibility is accepted for incidents arising out of use or misuse of this information.
Activities requiring the use of ropes can be potentially hazardous and it is the user's responsibility to sufficiently educate themselves on safe rope practices. Please seek proper training before using any knots in real life settings.

The knot using your first method is not a Reef Knot, but a Thief Knot. The working ends should be on the same side when done (as illustrated in your second method).

Moro Tommi. Thank you for the feedback. Having looked into it more I can see the difference between Reef knot and Thief knot, many sources don't pick up on this difference. I will include this when I do an updated video (I omitted important information on the sheet bend also so need to do an update).

Hey Brother, Enjoy the video and looking forward to increasing my knowledge of all the various knots that are available that are known to be useful for something at anyone given time. You know your channel is really doing great when all the crazies try to use it to draw a little attention to their pathetic and miserable existence. BTW: What is Silgo near? GOD Bless 📖🛐✈️

Hey Chuck, thanks for the kind comment. I'm new to all this but hope I can make content that people find useful. 👍 Sligo is in the north west of Ireland...about 2.5hrs NW of Dublin. 🙂

One knot (not covered in the video) replaces these three knots and most other knots: The Bowline knot. If you know the Bowline knot, then you don't need to know these 3 knots nor many other knots. Another knot to know is the "Truckie's Hitch" because it can provide tension, which the Bowline Knot does not. For example, you tie a Bowline Knot on one end and use the Truckie's Hitch on the other end to have a taut line. The third (and final knot you'll ever need) is (I believe it's called) the "Constrictor Knot". You tie the Bowline knot to an animal's leg (e.g. pig, horse, etc.), the animal will most likely get loose because the Bowline knot does not "constrict" the leg. Those are the only knots you'll ever need (3 of them). No need to learn any others.

Thanks for the feedback. I was specifically focusing on joining ropes in this video. I covered the constrictor in another video. I planned to do separate videos on the bowline knot and the trucker hitch, they warrant videos of their own imo. 👍🙂

@@EMKayaking : I'm glad you agree there's only 3 knots people should know. Every other knot is just useless when you know the 3 knots I mentioned.

I'm not agreeing that there's only 3 knots ppl should know, but that those particular 3 are important to know 😉 Every knot has its use.

@@EMKayaking : Sorry, but I STRONGLY disagree. Unless you can provide proof that any other knot provides better "whatever" than the 3 knots then I stand by what I said (The 3 knots I mentioned is all people need to learn).

You tied a thieves knot, a square knot, a surgeon's knot, a sheets bend, and a zeppelin knot.

Square knit should have the ends going to SAME side. The one you show first is a "sugar knit or thief knot!!!

Yep that is correct, an error on my part. Intend to do a remake when I get time. Thanks for the feedback 👍
