There are so many hack welding videos on this site that it's super refreshing to see one like this where it's done right and also demonstrates what happens when it's done wrong.

To take the back purge a step further, I'd suggest sealing the end plugs tight with ductape (you could even dispense with the balled up foil and just use ductape to close off the ends) then put a pinhole in the end opposite the gas inlet side and adjust the inlet gas flow for a steady gentle outward flow at the outlet side, which would insure a steady gentle outflow at the weld gap as well. If you use the balled up foil for a plug you could still wedge a small piece of 3/16" brake tubing etc in the opposite end, the idea is to have a controlled and verifiable end-to-end gas flow, not just random leakage at both plugs, the inlet side should be completely sealed and the outlet side should have controlled outflow, insuring the center weld zone is covered with gas. Give it a couple minutes of flow time to purge, then weld while flow is steady.
@quartfeira
@quartfeira 2 года назад
Exactly! And to improve your improvement as the Argon is heavier than air you want to put the pinholes mostly on the upper side of the ductape. 😁 (It's just my thing, I don't know actually if it's technically the best way to do it)✌️

I own Wheat State welding LLC. I have been using an Everlast I mig 205, 60 amp plasma cutter and a 250 amp AC DC TIG machine from Everlast for The last 5 years the only failure I've had was a low voltage power supply in the MIG welder that tech support told me was a common problem because the fans fail and take out the power supply. I sent them information from my own troubleshooting and they sent me a new power supply that arrived within a couple of days. Everything came with instructions and worked out wonderfully. after 5 years of hard use I had to clean and adjust the points on the tig machine yesterday. That was a super simple job and now I have an HF arc start again. these two things are literally the only problem I've had from all three of these machines using them daily for The last 5 years. Once a year I open up all three machines and blow them out thoroughly. But that is the only maintenance I do to themI have been blown away by the quality and performance of the Everlast machines and we'll put them up against a Lincoln or Miller any day of the week. I love my Everlast equipment and would suggest taking a close look at it for anybody who's trying to find get equipment on a decent budget for their shop.

I've had pretty good luck with *Solar Flux* type B for stainless exhaust tubing. You dissolve a small amount of the powder in methanol and paint it on the back side in lieu of Argon backup right before welding (it can fall off when dry). Only mix what you need. The residue is glassy and really hard to remove, so this is not a great choice for hygienic work like food plumbing or intake runners, but it's the cat's meow for exhaust work where a bit of debris is OK. I think it saves a lot of hassle and some money. Besides, it was a classified technology in WW-II.
@JACK-jm7bo
@JACK-jm7bo Год назад
Does it prevent the concaving of welds or no?
@ralphwaters8905
@ralphwaters8905 Год назад
@@JACK-jm7bo + No, but it mostly handles sugaring on the back side where shielding gas is not present. The glassy residue is hard to remove so it works well in exhausts but not so much for food plumbing ..

That’s the first time I ever seen anyone use aluminum foil to purge, not hating or anything, just first time ever seeing it be done like that, I learned using tape, one side completely closed for the hose, and the other side little pin holes so it flows out, and keep tape where the welds are going to be done. Great job!

Just watched weld tubes video on the giveaway. Those guys are get definitely awesome your guys unit look awesome. I'm a new welder maybe 12 hours in. but seen a recent video video of purging the inside of the tube with gas. Finnagins garage. If you don't load the tube with gas on an engines exhaust or turbo set up it will pull the crystals that form on the back of the welds and could ruin a turbo. Great video showing both with and with out gas.

This reminds me of silver soldering in HVAC&R. Purging nitrogen inside the copper pipe at the proper rate so you don't blow out your silver solder and making pin holes. The purge in silver soldering removes the oxidation of the braze and the copper and doesn't allow carbon build-up. Basically the same thing I believe, only now we're welding. the next step above silver soldering, and we want a strong weld so this adds to the process. YAY - Argon!!!

Hey brotha love the videos! Just curious (Now this maybe an overtly dumb question since I'm basically a layman in terms of welding knowledge) but I'm a very diy guy whose instinct is to always get something done on the spot without buying the proper and necessary tools for the job so my question is, what if I don't have an extra argon tank laying around? Is there any other easily obtainable gas' that I can use as a replacement?

If you want the purge to come out better you need to diffuse it somehow. The way that a lot of us achieve this in the field is by folding a piece of masking tape about four times and then taping over the purge hose end to act as a splitter for the argon to hit.

I’ve made close to probably 1000 X-ray quality stainless welds using this method. Also when you’re welding in position if you don’t have enough purge it will make it more difficult to get penetration on the bottom of the joint

Extremely happy I watched this. Thank you. So, picture this. Building a curve with multiple angles. So if building a curve and everything is butting up lovely. Once tacked up. Will it be just as good with the purge? You had two open ends and you had one joint. I'm talking two open ends and let's say 6 or 7 joints. Is this the same set up?

I know it’s all argon, but can flow from the purge blowing through the seam disrupt the gas coverage from your cup? Do you need to use a higher CFH through your cup when you’re welding pipe with a purge than you would typically use with the same size cup welding plate?
