Working many years in the same trade and you turn into an efficiency guru. Small tweaks in the way you move add up and can really mean the difference of getting your knees replaced at age 40 or never. Its fascinating to watch and go through the process of learning and realization yourself.

As an old mud set tile setter I can only say WOW! I saw you dump that thinset out and thought "what the heck?" then you screeded with your ultraspreader and I said "shut the front door!" The cutting the tile was really clever way of going about things...a small makita demo hammer would have made the cut tile removal easier...Kudo's to you ...thanks for sharing!

Nice work in Croatia we lay smaller mosaic tiles mostly 2,5x2,5 cm (1“x1“). Because of that cutting the tiles requires a lot more precision and is more time consuming. But with the right tools you can get the job done.

Hi Sasha I started tiling swimming pools in 1972 and most pools were called freeform with a lot being kidney shaped. The major difference there is that you first cut the walls so that there is a nice even line and then lay the bulk floor as I just did in the video and then you have to cut the floor into the walls. It’s not hard just takes more time

@roysouthby1 4 года назад
Hi Peter once you’ve emptied the pool go over the entire surface to find any drummy spots. These have to be removed and repaired using an acrylic bonding agent and a sand and cement mortar mix The Ultraspreader is only good for the floor so you will have to use a small notched trowel on the walls

Second: if you are cutting anything, you need to wear protection: after all you don't have a spare set of lungs or eyes lying around. Wear the safety glasses or safety goggles, a 3M dust respirator if you are cutting anything--the respirator must have a filter that is able to screen out fine dust particles. And wear ear plugs so that dust doesn't get into your ears. If you are installing glass mosaic tile, ALWAYS polish the cut ends--cute little hands and cute little feet ALWAYS find a way to cut themselves on the cut ends of glass tile.

I found this interesting, because I tiled my pool after finding it impossible to keep the plaster looking good. I had to make it up as I went along, so generally laid the straight bits (fast, even with a normal trowel), but for the angled bits, I offered up a sheet, marked, and then cut it. It was much more time consuming than as above. However, the most time-consuming were the four corners, which I dealt with as above (although indistinct ate the deep end), but which were more graduated in slope, and the angle at the external edges of the Roman end, with narrowing tesserae. What's more, the pool wasn't wholly symmetrical, as formed by gunite and then plastered in cement and marble, which was then ground smooth. However, the tiles were variegated (white, pale, blue, darker blue, with very dark blue in lines), so less-than-perfect workmanship don't show up. It was very hot work, when the sun shone (UK!), so I had to rig a sun sail sometimes, and pump out the water from the sump when it rained at other times, also, insects liked to embed themselves when grouting. However, I've been extremely pleased with the result with many years comparatively trouble-free, following years of anguish over the plaster. In sunlight, it looks wonderful with the light refraction, and it night, it looks wonderful when floodlit.
@MC-eq3pm
@MC-eq3pm Год назад
Hi that's amazing! I live in UK too. Have a kidney shaped gunite pool and the stones/guntie are coming away from the walls so it's in need of a refresh. Did you use any primers prior to adhesive? Looking like tiling the pool is going to be the best possible option. But don't fancy paying out for someone to do it. Have experience tiling bathrooms and the like, but nothing with curved sides lol. Did you have any tiling experience before doing yours? Any tips would be helpful thanks :)
@colinelliott6162
@colinelliott6162 Год назад
@@MC-eq3pm My first comment is that I don't understand how stones/gunite are coming away from the walls, so there may be a difference in construction, or perhaps quality; I did not know, but apparently some gunite pools aren't done well (I've just read that, anyway). However, mine was, although I don't think they did the final top edge as well as they should, because I had to repair it. (It tends to take a beating from winter weather, and I once had ice ~4" thick, although I'm now careful to keep the water level lowered in winter. On occasion, it has overflowed.) With my pool, they carefully dug the hole with a back-hoe, fixed rebar in place, then brought a lorry from which the concrete was pumped through a long hose so as to create a concrete shell about 2" thick. I was told it is extremely strong, and I believe them. They then rendered it with white crushed marble and white cement, finally grinding it smooth. Within about 2-3 years, it was looking dingy. One can empty the pool and regrind it clean and smooth, but do that a few times, and one'll reach the concrete. I tried this a little, and a few other things, which were worse than useless, so resolved on tiles. I used Mapei waterproof tile adhesive, which is widely available, directly onto the render, which was extremely sound, one might almost say ideal. It was only unsatisfactory through discolouration. I should think primer worse than nothing. I bought the 1' by 1' sheets of mosaics from internet website. They're made in Iran. The supplier gave a good price, but when I checked quite recently, I found the same tiles cheaper from someone else. Although mostly variegated, I have some dark blue lines, and a pattern around the frost line, making up sheets using purpose-made mesh (from craft shops) and a jig. I wish I had had the time to incorporate a mosaic in the bottom, like a Roman dolphin, but I didn't want to spend the time. predominantly The pool is 32' x 16' with a 5' radius Roman end, and the cost (many years ago) was about £1,000, and perhaps 3 times that now (guess). I think any professional tiler would have charged many many £'000s to do it. I spent another £1,000 on new coping stones. I didn't think I could lay them well, and was going to pay someone to do it, but the cost made me do it myslef, and it worked, although I can see one place which a pro would have done better (the bedding too thick, where exact level was needed). I often wonder that I had the foolhardiness to think I could do it, as I admire the appearance, and ease of cleaning.

In know I'm 5 years late to this video, but I have a question for anyone who may want to respond. Is it more or less expensive to do a tile pool then to have a pool replastered ? I'm currently looking into having my pool redone. Its an ingrown pool currently plastered I'm considering having it done in tile instead of plaster. Nothing fancy, just ceramic or porcelain mosaic. I understand it last a lot longer than plaster and easier maintenance. Thanks for anyone who may reply, I've got 2-3 months of pool season left before getting serious about redoing the pool.
