HOW TO TILE A TUB SHOWER -- Step 1 Waterproofing and Prep

Tub shower surrounds are a popular bathroom fixture that are in most of the homes here. They can be tiled or acrylic but tile is a more desirable finish because of the custom look and other options available with ceramic or porcelain tile. When tiling one of these alcove tubs, special care and planning needs to be taken in order to achieve a successful installation. Many times, the tubs do not fit properly into the framing opening, leaving a gap between the tub lip flange and the wall to be tiled. Wet shimming tile backer board like Laticrete Hydro Ban Board is a good option to bring the wall out flush with the tub lip.
In this video I show how this is done!

What I find most intriguing is that probably 90% of contractors will skip certain processes just to move on to another job. I appreciate that Isaac takes time to teach the right way to do the job. Whether it’s necessary or not that’s up to the installers. I’m the type that rather be safe than sorry.

All shoes and boots have oils, solvents, dirt, and debris on their bottoms to varying degrees... not to mention a random screw , tack, staple, or nail .... when you hopped on the side walls it it hurt me just a little inside . @ArthurDentZaphodBeeb
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb 3 года назад
Foam board is designed to span 16", so it's a lot faster just shim the studs. Rather than using thinset to build out the entire wall, use 1-5/8" x 1/8" Fortifiber Furring Strip material (felt - comes in 100' rolls, usually a 5-pack for $25 - it's inexpensive and almost all lumber yards/contractor supply houses will have it). Simply staple it on where you need to build out. Can build up multiple layers very quickly - framers use it a lot (old-timers cut rolls of 30# felt into 1 5/8 wide rolls - messy). No worries about compression when you screw off the foam board using felt furring strips, so can proceed immediately to waterproofing/tiling. I don't like using any cementious material in a waterproof assembly. I like using sealant.

Keep that Tub spotless because your client and his wife will always remember those thoughtful details long after you’re gone.

I noticed that you put the hydro ban board on top of the drywall on 2/3 walls, and on the 3rd wall, you have a GoBoard and then you put a hydro ban board on top of that. If you do not have drywall, and you are going directly onto the studs, would you recommend doing what you did on that 3rd wall? a layer of GoBoard and then a hydro ban board? Thanks in advance. Appreciate your vids, and hoping you’ll do an updated installation vid w/ “new” process (along w/ a couple diff layouts and products when the opportunity comes, which hope it does😉). TCNA recommends setting the board inside the tub flange, not setting it on top of the flange. I think, it's because, if water gets behind tile and travels down to the edge of the board, it ends up inside the tub. If the board is set on top of the flange, the edge of the board is above the flange, and it creates possibilities for water to travel outside. You may say "I have a paint-on membrane joining the board and the tub, it'll keep the water inside." But what if that joint develops a crack? Wouldn't putting the board inside create an extra level of protection?

Slip sheet the entire wall surface with one continuous piece, secondly the industry needs to stop trying to unify the mud pans to the wall, it's a fools errand treat them separately much like this tub and the wall ( The tub flange here should be inset beyond the wall board application). I often have them not connected in any fashion but overlap, pan up the wall then the wall separately overlap the custom pan, but not connected for reasons of waters curious nature to wick upwards. Gravity and separation of the surfaces (Horizontal and vertical ) do some real work here. The one piece slip sheet ( Think of siding on a house acting as a rain screen) is the last bit of protection and required since water is tough to stop from getting where it ought not be. These industry approved products are mostly designed to make industry money and few advancements since the hot mop have moved the ball much. Your are a true craftsman since you think about these issues often and good on you for it. Some old-timer taught you these values or you are just persistent enough to work those out on your own but if you ask the wrong question you will be doing product videos for some idiot company forever. Do look into house siding as a rain screen, there could be a better way.

Nice work. Prep work pays big dividends! A nice flat, square, true and plumb surface makes tilework so much easier and the finished product turns out as close to perfection as humanly possible. I presume youll use a mud cap tile around the edge to hide the extra thickness of the Hydro-ban board? And if not, what do you use? Are there options other than the various metal trims and accent tiles? For instance, if using a marble tile and the homeowner doesnt want any other tile or trim used, how would you treat that edge? Would you cut some marble with a bevel and angle it or what? Thanks in advance.

That copper water supply 1/2 way up is interesting, must be a shower body spray on a pole? It would have been nice to see u tile it also?

Really enjoy your channel helps me improve as a professional tile setter. Everyone no matter how old can always learn a little more. What are you using to protect the tubs, tape, paper? My way of doing it I feel isn't the best.

I love your videos, man. You're thorough, and super inciteful. I'm looking to get into learning to do tile and you're an inspiration to me. I have a few projects in mind for my house that I will be starting soon, and you've been a huge help. I appreciate what you do. I'd love to support you by rocking one of your O.Tilehats, but I don't know where I could buy one. Could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks much for the videos! Is bathtub more achievable than curbless shower for a beginner? Thank you.
