For all those guys complaining... this looks just like an introductory 101-drill to a student who has no experience in grappling. It was just to explain to her that "classic sticky hand fighting" posture isn't enough and that the training needs to involve attacks on all levels of height. This fact used to be lost in TMA and this teacher includes into the training. Well done. There is no reason to believe that this was a pressure test or a real life application (and the teacher didn't claim so). Indeed, for a pressure test the shoot must be applied professionally with lots of force. But this was just a drill for the student to teach her not to keep a too stiff posture but to be prepared to lower her center of gravity when facing a takedown. It will need more hours of training to make this effective in a real fight. Guess both the teacher and the student know that.

Very happy to see Wing Chun being trained with defense of shooting take downs in mind. Only thing I would recommend is to train the more common "shoot" as well to better understand mechanics and be a better training partner. The way wrestlers shoot in by dropping the front knee and then swinging the rear leg up allows them to keep their posture straight the whole time, maintain good balance with their stance, and immediately change the angle if the tackle failed. A little more advance, I know, but it really helps so you know what to expect! Keep training! :)

Agree - easy to defend a shoot when the person has broken their own posture. A proper shoot by someone who knows how is a totally different beast - I learned that the hard way. If you've only got time for one reaction, you want to make sure it's the one that works against both those who know what they're doing and those who do not. Same goes with all techniques of course - a semi-decent boxers combinations will be a very different beast than someone who has only seen boxing. Ditto with kicks, knees clinching etc. This is the eternal difficulty with difficulty with training against techniques outside your system. So important to do but so hard to do well, unless you are lucky enough to have some decent level practitioners of that attack in your club at the time it's hard to know if you're testing robustly or not. Really respect that thought is being given to takedowns though as it is not something generally considered in most WC clubs I have trained at. An amazing thing would be to get a wrestling coach in to teach the club how to do those takedowns espec. single and double leg. That would pay massive dividends as not only could you test against that technique properly, you would also have a very powerful tool in your arsenal!

Note that both my takedowns and defenses against takedowns are not particularly good, so not saying that the technique shown wouldnt work against a proper shoot, more just thinking about the difficulty of training responses to unfamiliar techniques.

@@michaelmcnamara1839 I wholeheartedly agree. The best way to learn how to defend against something is to learn to do it well. This way you know all the strengths, weaknesses, and contingencies. Interestingly enough, the techniques I learned to defend double and single legs in my traditional martial arts classes are used in UFC and ONE, it's just they've trained it against hundreds of opponents thousands of times giving them a more complete understanding of how they work and what to do when they don't.

I would like to test a real shoot. Shooting 100% will not be damaging but it will test to truly see if these techniques actually work in real time from a real martial artist that actually shoots correctly.

Didn't know how to defend against a takedown so I asked a friend who wrestled in highschool. Laid me out in a flash, almost took out my knee. He then showed me how I could've defended against it and admitted it's cons in a street fight. Traditional martial arts or not, you have to test your skill in order to make it work.

Time for traditional MA to incorporate counters against wrestlers such as using knees. It will be a subconcious reaction with practice and awareness.

TMA's already have knees and wrestling. Chinese wrestling has been around for 3,000 years.

They should get someone who actually knows how to do a take down, by bending over with his head down and his butt sticking out and not dropped his knees he is only to get choked out, I know this is just an exercise but it but no trained person does a takedown like that

It's just a drill guys, you saw how hard it was for a beginner to learn this response against take downs. Adam lowered like that to make it easier for his student to understand
@hasanagic96
@hasanagic96 4 года назад
@@screamtheguy6425 yes, but even if its a drill. its a drill that will teach u how to get taken down, and possibly quite dangerous if ur in the street. just a crossface will likely not stop anyone that knows how to wrestle even a little bit. There are some stuff that are literally too dangerous to teach (by coaches that do not understand wrestling), just for the reason that they will not work and will put the student learning them in bigger danger.

I get what he's trying to teach, but the common problem that any viewer of this video who has at least some knowledge of how a real fight might go, this technique might prove ineffective. It's questionable if it really works because of one thing: they don't look like they're actually trying to GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH in the take-down. In a real fight, you better believe someone will come at you full force in a take-down or any other attempt to harm you. Also, I don't understand why at the end of the vid, he said to move without triggering you partner's reflexes. Why? One way or another, reflexes will (or should) be involved in a fight. They're one of our bodies' natural ways of reacting and could save your life. I don't know if I'm interpreting it wrong or not, but that's what it sounds like he's advising against. This is why it is important to simulate a real-life confrontation. Everyone needs to put their techniques through a lense of practicality instead of practicing them half-heartedly and saying, "Oh, yeah! Of course that will work in a street fight." You can get yourself killed with that mindset.
