How to Train your Dragon BUT AT SEA? | The Sea beast (2022) (Review & Comparison) 

I like that you mentioned that even if a movie is heavily inspired off another, it can still be good. When you think about it, almost every story is “fanfiction” of something else - Percy Jackson is Greek God fanfiction, Game of Thrones is Medieval Fanfiction, Twilight is Vampire fanfiction, 50 Shades of Grey is Twilight fanfiction - everything is connected and not everything can be 100% original.

I honestly loved how it had alot of similarities to HTTYD. I honestly don't think its a rip-off at all. If anything, I could easily see The Sea Beast taking place in the same universe just at a different time and think it eludes to that better than TNR... which blatantly copies and repeats scenes from HTTYD. Aside from that, I honestly enjoyed how it took more of the Moby Dick route and the amount of details that are hard to catch in the first watch through. Also the inclusivity of all the various characters was amazing. And fun fact, the person behind the movie is a past disney director who directed Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, Raya, and many others.

I’d say this was definitely my favourite animated film in a good while, and that was kinda surprising to me since it wasn’t done by any of the big 4 studios. As far as the story goes, it does have many similarities to HTTYD, of course particularly with two major plot lines being the war/conflict between humanity & the beasts, and the ever-diminishing relationship between Captain Crow and Jacob Holland. Even with these similarities though, I think the writers managed to find a lot ground where the story was pretty unique, being for example the first battle of the Inevitable against Red. In terms of the animation, it’s pretty easy to speak on; extremely clean, quite unique, and the lighting was fecking outstanding. Plus, this is all not to mention the soundtrack, which supported the story amazingly. Overall I’d definitely agree that the film had a lot of inspiration from HTTYD, however in this case it’s definitely moreso an inspired film than a kind of rip-off in my eyes; the basic premise of the story’s world is fairly unique, Red has strong connotations to Toothless while still behaving quite different throughout most of the film, and I was kinda surprised in that the film took a fairly dark turn in the end about written “history”, which wasn’t completely explored by HTTYD(of course due to story reasoning). There are heavy similarities, but I could gladly say that it stands well as its own film. As well, thanks for putting out a review on the movie; I had slightly guessed you might review Sea Beast, so I was really curious as to what you thought on it.

Following this logic, then even dragonheart, a movie that came out before HTTYD (1996), copied HTTYD, or viceversa. In that movie, a man slaughters all dragons and then befriends one, learning dragons aren't evil. They then are forced to say goodbye to eachother. (The plot is slightly more complex than this, but this is just the core) I don't think sea beast copied HTTYD. Many movies use the "outcast, socially inept kid befriends weird, misunderstood creature". It's not new. Just because 2 plots are similar, doesn't mean they copy eachother, nor they're less original. There aren't many tropes family movies can play with, so of course movie producers keep dancing around them. I respectfully disagree.

Toothless have a lot of ancestors. I think all of the dragons in the classes are related to a one dragon that branched off.

This movie really did slap me in the face; did not for one second expect it to be as good as it was.

The bones of the story are definitely a little too similar, and it doesn’t really do a lot to subvert expectations. If they did do a sequel I would love to see how they handle the origin of how the war between humans and sea beasts really started, but I have a feeling it was just for greed as expected, BUT with the little hints that magic exist it could be something interesting, I’ve heard some people speculating that the sea beasts are humans that were cursed to live out the rest of their life as beasts to be hunted. And honestly I hope that’s true.

I actually had to pause the movie to recite “THEYVE KILLED HUNDREDS OF US. WELL WEVE KILLED THOUSANDS OF THEM! THEY PROTECT THEMSELVES THATS ALL!!!” but as someone heading into the animation industry and having wanted to work on the other httyd movies as a kid it makes me happy it’s still possible, despite whatever happened with The Nine Realms

Blue from the Sea Beast looks like a HobgobblerxMudskipper. But more hobgobbler. BUT STILL FRIGGIN ADORABLE

I think it's kinda weird to compare two different creatures roaring and say they copied off eachother on that front. I don't think the concept of a large beast roaring at an enemy is a unique, iconic thing only to httyd.

I'm a lil annoyed that Red is compared to Toothless just cuz of the mouth shape, sorry but it's not copyrightable lol. If you look closer at Red's face and head, it is "sculpted" like a serpent and eel combination. Toothless looks more like a salamander. But yes! I loved this movie and I think it should be seen, especially by Httyd fans, as a fresh new product that lightly sways towards the concept we love

The fact Silver included a scene from Jurassic World- The first Jurassic Park movie came out way before HTTYD ever came out-

This movie in my opinion is absolutely amazing, it's a Netflix masterpiece. Yes it has httyd similarities, but there is a lot of new things that weren't in httyd like captain crow adopting Jacob, the main cause of the trouble is the queen and king, etc. One thing that I really liked about the sea beasts is that even if Maisie and Jacob befriended red, red still has its wild side. SPOILER ALERT! The scene where Jacob shot red to get her attention because Maisie was hurt, red did not hesitate to attack Jacob but when seeing Maisie was hurt she suddenly stop and her emotions changed, but the inevitable launched a firework to get red's attention. A lot of this kind of movies just forgets that they're wild and just throw off there wild side upon seeing a good human interaction, but this movie did not forget to keep red's wild side.

My Opinion is: Sea beast is a nice catch up from How to train your Dragon. There are so many paralells to this movies. But in comparison to movies like nine realms, it want to be Something different. I wish there comes some other Movies in this way in the future. With that, the Original movie would also maybe anchant new fans and maybe, one day we would see more frome the Original Univers. Netflix has many licences frome HTTYD and if they are used in tgis way for movies which has a good level of quality, we could bee lucky.

Can we all just agree that as far as stories go, I think we have explored nearly all of them so even though this movie had similar things happening that mimicked another one in the past, is it still just a retelling of a story that has existed since who knows how long ago. I guess how to train your dragon is a rip of Frankenstein at this point.

Gotta say during that clip at 1.30 I almost expected the kid to say `You don´t have teeth´ like Hiccup did to Toothless or something along the lines of ´you aren´t so bad´ lol

The bluster's eyes remind me of whenever Toothless pupils narrow. Like I can't look at it without thinking of when Toothless was controlled by the Bewilderbeast. Got facial traits of Toothless and his mate, and some traits of the Bewilderbeast itself.

Another thing was that blue (lil blue blob creature) immediately reminded me and my brother of the lil hobgobblers from the third HTTYD movie.

From a happy child, I turned into a person watching a fish spin instead of writing for many people...

Yup my sister pointed out red looks like the light fury about 2 months ago when we watched it.

They are both good, heart warming stories. And i dont mind the similarities, i could say i cuaite enjoyd them

About half an hour into the movie, I told my friend who was watching it with me, "This is about to turn into HTTYD". For me personally, the movie's quality declined as it progressed, those first 30 minutes were the best part of the movie for me. But it's still an enjoyable film and isn't bad by any means.

When I saw this movie. Red reminds me of the light fury because of its looks. And I love the movie

No, Moby Dick. Imagine the whales but beasts instead. Captain Crow is Captain Ahab. Moby Dick, the white whale that Crow,erm... Ahab obsessed over is now a red beast. No beasts are trained in this story, ever. It's just that the story is now viewed from a more modern view of whaling which as evolved since the time the store was written. It's a change that came over years, that made us question how we see monsters, long before HTTYD, or Shrek, even. Among the animated films that questioned our traditional views of monster there was Grendel, Grendel, Grendel. As much as I like HTTYD , it didn't bring much that was new. Wanting to ride a dragon was the main excuse for the story. Sea Beast however revisits Moby Dick but with the evolved view our relation with nature past and present. Unlike Stoik, Captain Crow changing comes as a bitter defeat with little up side. He learns, grimly , that his life has been a waste, an endings that mirrors more Ahab's tragic end then Stoik's who gets to rebuild his village toward a brighter future.

Red reminds me of the bewilderbeast too!

Idk but Jaccob reminds me of Arthur Morgan and Captain Crow reminds me of Dutch Van Der Linde both from Red Dead Redemption 2. Jaccob and Arthur were raised by their sort of father figure, Dutch and the Captain Crow, Dutch and the Captain became bad especially Dutch. So yeah that's pretty much it

God, I wish Toothless would have married Red instead.

While the movie isn’t bad, the sea beast doesn’t have the same impact, build up and natural feel as httyd when it comes to human and creature bonding. In httyd toothless is shot down by hiccup, completely in hiccup's mercy. And when hiccup first tries to help toothless, toothless doesn’t buy it at all which prompt hiccup to gradually earn a dragon's trust and discover that dragons aren’t murderous creatures. Meanwhile in the sea beast in the first battle with red, red has the upper hand the entire time, the two main character cut the ropes in the hopes to save the ship and the crew, NOT the sea beast, and red just decided to bring the two along. Even after that, red is shown to be benevolent the entire time even though one of the mc tried to kill her initially. One could argue that red acts that way as she doesn’t see one singular human as a threat but not having the human initiate the bonding and aments weakens the relationship between them

Red's body is basically in the mosasaurus cuz the flappy fins in the tail remind me

I saw the movie last Tuesday or Wednesday and had a few thoughts on it’s similarities between HTTYD 😅😅 it was a good movie definitely Red looks a bit like Toothless with the whole face it was good thought in my opinion I’d still recommend it if anyone is looking for a animated movie to watch on Netflix

Unless if it was blatantly copying one movie to cash in on it, I never saw using elements from one movie necessarily made it bad. If anything, it could have been like TemTem; someone probably saw the originals and wanted to do their own take on the idea.
