Thank you Dianne for this tutorial. I was about to write to you on how to use a tracing paper after watching your videos in the course and then found this on RU-vid. :)
Could you please do some lessons on how to trace from a fairly complex photo? For example, when I try and trace from a rose, I easily get confused and am not sure which lines to include. Edges of petals are obvious, but I'm never sure what is beneficial when it comes to value changes and shadows. I seem to end up with either too few lines or so many lines that the resultant line drawing is unintelligible. I've found plenty of videos on how to trace, but not enough on what to trace.
gillian bc I don’t recommend tracing from photographs of plants. It is very important to understand the plant amd how it fits together and to draw from life first, even if the drawing is not perfect. You should only use photo reference after this point, (if at all) after which you will not be confused about ‘what goes where’ and will understand how the plant fits together but is you are going to do it anyway - use a white or black background to photograph the plant, so that you can see what’s going on.... and light it well from one side.
Is there a reason you don't use a light table? My table was under $30 USD on Amazon and is bright and big enough to do an A4 size 300gsm sheet of watercolor paper.
