In How To Transfer Artwork: Paper Stencil/Mask (Part 1), I demonstrate the process of cutting a paper stencil and a paper mask from a photocopied reference image. The stencil and the mask will both be used to transfer the image onto the substrate in part 2.

Nice, definitely will take time. But..... good things often do. I see I'll be binge watching when I have time. I have painting skills. Have painted a couple dozen Vehicles over the decades. Even painted my bush plane with a '70s lowrider scheme. But a artist I am not! If I succeed with the mural on the hood that will be a first. Lol Miss the days of the Rolling airbrush art like on the Vans of the past. It seems like regardless the cost of the vehicle what people consider art today is a vinyl wrap. 😒

Unfortunately, vinyl is way more cost effective (in the short term). Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!

Hi Trev. Looking forward to your next tutorial. I have just been asked about some hot rod style ghost flames on a harley. It's already black and i would like to do a drop shadow which i think would look nice. But what colour should i use. Will do a couple of test panels but not sure which way to go. What would you do? I have a bit of a free hand so i can play a bit with colours and style. I get the impression she would like a pearl of some sort. Any guide would be great. PS. I love the oops moment, if thats the only one it's a result. Many Thanks as usual. Have Fun. Guy

Hey Guy, Is the bike staying black or will you base it out in another color first? Personally, I don't like ghost flames over black and would offer the client other solutions. Ghosting over black with a pearl can easily result in too much contrast and the desired effect is lost. It takes very little pearl to successfully pull off a ghosted effect if you're not aware. Ghost flames also look better over a metallic base in my opinion. The metallic helps hide the pearl flames better from a side-cast view and makes them stand out more in direct-view in my experience. The metallic also provides a more appealing overall finish as opposed to a plain color. I've used drop shadows with ghost flames successfully in the past by using the same toner as the base coat with a slight (no more than 5 percent) of a transparent or over reduced black. A metallic base will again help blend and hide the shadow. Making the shadows too dark will kill the ghosted effect in a hurry. Less is more. Obviously, that won't work with a black base coat because you won't see the shadow at all. In theory, it could probably be done with a metallic black base coat. A transparent, or over reduced black should darken the metallic around the ghost flames enough to provide a very subtle drop shadow, but that's something you'll have to play around with on test panels. Hope that helps. I previously received a request to demonstrate how I do ghost flames. I'll try to get working on that video soon. As far as the oops moment goes, there will be more during the actual airbrush process of that eagle portrait. Regardless of experience, we all make mistakes and I'm definitely not immune to that. I think it's a good idea to show my mistakes and the approach I take to fix them when necessary. Learning to deal with mistakes is a part of any artform.
