holy crap, I have watched a million air brush videos on youtube trying to get better, and not one I had watched mentioned tip #2, keep the airflow constant, makes total sense and was an ah-ha moment for me, thank you sir
I just purchased my second aribrush set from amazon for $70 all together and I never realized I was so good at using an airbrush for painting on paper. To calrify: I bought a Testors airbrush that attached to a can of compressed air and used it primarily to paint model cars so I could use any acrylic paint that I found at discount stores, which works when properly thinned. I also used to draw quite a bit in my youth and all but stopped since graduating university. I purchased a new system online so I could use Spectra Color brand paints , which are airbrush only, because I love the color pallet they have. I am now painting scale 1:18 model kits of old era vehicles with Spectra Flame, recreating Matchbox Cars from the 1960's and the 1970's era. I am not sure if I can pull off a Robin Williams, but I do know that I can give The Dark Knight one hell of a go!
Ive been a member for a while now to his sub service. This video here is very worth the view. Color theory and Finishing the piece were especially good for me.Thanks
Great tutorial...very helpful tips! I've always been frustrated with airbrush performance not realizing that it was mostly due to "tip dry". Thank you!!
This was great to see I've had all these problems only been airbrushing about a year so very early days using a cheap £20 airbrush but now have a iwata £130 and it's so much better and yes I kept stopping the air every past n spitting paint all the time 😡but once you get it right it feels great. I've subscribed 👍
I really enjoyed this video. I just got an airbrush for Christmas to use on hand carved birds and these tips will be quite useful. Additionally the color isolation technique will also help my brushwork and I’m excited to implement that to my work!! Thank you for this video!!
I have just started airbrushing in this second lockdown and am loving it. PS I am a disabled 57 year old and painting has saved my sanity. Thanks for your help!!
Great refresher for me with the tips and can't wait for the airbrush show videos. At the end of erasing you summed up where I am, need to do more free hand, need to stop shying away from colour and get the colour wheel out more. Thanks for the push in the right direction
I’m a amateur airbrush artist and sometimes it just seems I can’t get anything to work if it’s not the paint flow it’s the air pressure if not that I get a clog but your videos are amazing I love all your instructions ! you make it look so easy like when you did the VALEK painting of the evil nun that was amazing what advice would you give to a struggling airbrush artist ! Thank you for your time Forever your student Marc ( aka EL PADRE PAINTINGS)
Great video. I'm about to start airbrushing but I'm not sure I will be trying to mix my own colors... Yet. The tip about tip drying I will definitely watch out for
I simply love it,,, thanks it's so helpful for and learners if this amazing art of painting... Your tips and way of comunicate council's airbrush are understandable...
Stumbled on this just searching for those little extra tips. & Aha !! Many thanks Mick, I picked up a lot. Beneficial for me was, Right understanding ! I mean I was a Contract Draughtsman based in Brum-30 yr worked all across from Wolv'h , Dudley, Cradley Heath Halesowen & so on, Listening to your speech & dialect, was like being at home !Thanks so much. Kind Regards.
I learned what a Q tip is in the UK I had to keep backing up and listening but being in the USA I never knew what a cotton bud was until today. Oh and by the way great video. You are the best source for airbrush technique and inspiration I have ever had the privilege to watch. There is no close second place
Excellent video!! You are a great teacher!! I am thinking of buying an airbrush and this video was very good information. At first I wanted an airbrush just to blow inks and watercolor. Now I am thinking of using it to paint instead and in addition to a brush. Which airbrush/airbrush system would you recommend?? Thank you I will be looking forward to seeing more videos with you.
Thank you so much. This was a perfect tutorial. The color theory part was invaluable. Although I went to art school, I still had a hard time understanding the saturation process....you explained it perfectly. I am definitely subscribing.
During Tip #2 I thought it was interesting to see how you held the airbrush with both hands. I guess that could have been a tip all by itself :) Thank you for such a great video.
Hi, I'm about to start my airbrush journey and using a basic Airbrush unit to see if ai take to it (Timbertech ABPSTO6 with the Compressor Piston). Amazing work by the way.. My questions are, 1)How do you clean your airbrush out before adding a new paint colour. 2)The Wheel that you show, do all airbrush paint suppliers have a wheel of colour? If so how do you get it, I'd asume from their website. 4)If you have to release the air, would you hit a rubbish side piece first and then go to your work? (Like the sheet next to your work you hit with paint, and then paint. 5)How do you make those stencils you use (like the Death in the woods one, where you hit it with white to show cloud fornation)? 6)Is there a site to get those stencils or is it easier to make your own? Thank you in Kind. 7)If using AcrylicPaint, do you start dark or light in your colour. So do you paint like oils on canvas or water colour to water paper principles. Love your work.. Great tips Mick, I have the Airbrush series colour wheels and after a few hard weeks, I began to get the hang of my colours. I did an eagle head and splattered a great blob of paint onto it, but I kept going and it turned out to be one of the best feathers in the painting. Thanks for the tips.
That's what I need to do dedicate a week to my air brush, I have many diffrent cans of RUSTOLUME paints. I'm going to thin it down to paint they are water clean up. I have all the colors to make other colors.
I’m a subscriber to both of your channels, appreciate all you do for the airbrush community and how you guys stick to the basics. Thanks again greatly appreciated.
Hi! Where can i find that filters in the wall? I'm looking for them for my airbrush booth and can't find them anywhere. Could you say me the name? Thanks for your videos, learning a lot from you.
hiya, the tour is part of our new magazine show, we will be visiting artists from around the UK that do the job as a profession to give some insite to what it takes to make the leap to doing it themselves, in addition to products reviews, product tests, industry news and gossip, of course tutorials as well thanks Mick
Hi 8m still new to airbrushing i manly do 1/35 scale but with the colour wheel I understand the way you say it. I just wish there was someone near me who could teach me the basics watching videos is ok but there’s no one saying yes that’s right or no hang on let’s take another look at it. But thanks
That chart blew my mind! I typically use Vallejo paints would they work, more or less, with a chart like that? Also, where can one find that chart (to print for my studio)?
Good Morning Mick I have signed up for the online course. How do I download the workbook and other downloads. Also I can't seem to find any new videos, it says you put new videos up weekly, am I looking in the right area? I think so far your videos are very thorough, and I am enjoying them. Thanks Cliff
On the beginner section in the videos there will be 2x section that look like videos but are blank, they will say beginner work book and the guide book click them and they will instantly download Cheers
Smaller compressor owner here. Running the air all the time just isn't practical, so I've found a good technique is to always do the following sequence: Air on, paint on, paint off, air off. Basically, don't just release the trigger when you're done with a stroke, make sure the trigger is all the way forward before stopping the air.
Hi Mick as a first timer to the world of airbrushing can you recommend a setup, compressor and airbrush wise as there are so many out there, I’m starting out on model aircraft
Hi Steve Its always best to try to spend a little more when buying a setup. Pretty much any compressor will do the job if it has a tank, if noise is an issue or you need a silent one prices tend to hike a little. Bambi compressors are very quiet but can be pricey but they are great compressors. As for airbrushes, ive always used iwata airbrushes, IMO keep away from iwata NEO airbrushes though. I can recommend the iwata eclipse CS great for pretty much any paint.
Is it normal for compressor to drop from initial bar settings ? For example, before spraying I set it on 20 - and right when I press the air action, it drops to 10-12 and stays on it. Is this normal behavior ?
This video has given me so much extra knowledge, thank you! I never knew there are erasers for airbrushing 😂 Can you recommend one that would work on airbrushed plastic miniatures? Thanks
Most will work but for a sharper erase a quite aggressive eraser is best, the most widely available is a fabre castell 7058 from most stationers or online pen specialists like cult pens
Yes although if using high end acrylics like createx there is no need to, i generally like a satin finish to airbrushed canvas and use windsor and newton satin spray varnish. Multiple medium coats rather than heavy wet ones
Hey Derek I generally use 2, one on the compressor and an additional one bench mounted, this also allows me to handle the airpressure easily if needed, i dont tend to use the inline little ones that attach to the airbrush as i find them a bit clumbsy and get in the way Thanks Mick
Hey Mick.. thanks for sharing your knowledge. Just hit the subscribe botton and left a like. Please keep making these kind of videos. Could you tell me what type of airbrush you are using there and what kind/size of nozzle it has? Thx in advance and b rgrds Cheers mate!
Hiya buddy, The airbrush im using is an Iwata Revolution BR 0.3 nozzle great little airbrush for the money, its what i generally use for all my work these days Thanks for subscribing Mick
Hi Jon Unfortunatly no, not at this moment, things could change but I closed the shop back in june to concentrate on other projects, but with me you never know Thanks and hope your well Mick
I use E'tac paints, less tip dry to begin with vs. all other water based paints I've tried in 40 years of airbrushing. E'tac has their own flow improver (Condition-air) that I add a few drops of to my bottle of water that I use to thin or reduce my paint before airbrushing. I've also modded the crown caps of my Olympos MP-200C Microns by removing two (opposite each other) of the four points, essentially making them exactly like the crown caps of the Harder Steenbeck Infinity. Thus I can paint with the crown cap on and still achieve the same fine lines I got when removing the cap.....yet I don't risk damaging my needle tip nor do I ever lose my crown cap.
Yes, anything airbourne that we can breath in is not good for us, although wearing a full mask for airbrushing is not always comfortable or asthetically pleasing, good ventilation i would say is a must for our own health and safety
