I think my biggest issue is transitioning from a marathon diet!

Strength training is an important addition here. Now is the time to build power and speed in the legs before the next marathon block. I just raced Carmel Marathon in April and scheduled for Chicago in October. I'm racing three 1 mile races and two 5ks this summer before building to Chicago. I'm doing strength sessions 2-3 times weekly while sustaining 50 mile weeks with 1-2 quality sessions.

Some good points in the video, I will add my two pence too: 1) you should make sure you are well rested from your marathon before you start any other training block. 2) you should transition also into the paces you'll be wanting to run. You have mentioned you're hitting quicker than race paces already, and that is a big double risk: from a risk of injury/overtraining too soon, and from a risk of peaking too early too. 3) Bring back those hill reps, they are a fantastic way of hitting VO2 max at slower paces, with lower risk of injury and to improve running form.

Perfect opportunity to add #6- hire me as a coach and I’ll set you up with all these things and you won’t have to think about anything. As always, thanks for sharing your process.

Great video Andy. Always worth checking out some shorter than goal distance races too. May and June is a great time to check off a two mile race here, 4 mile there. You get an honest workout in a more laid back event. It's a tried and tested method for quicker running when you hit the goal events.

Absolutely, now's the time to knuckle down to enjoy those smaller summer events!

I’m all for having a future goal and plans beyond the current training block. I’m someone who falls into the post-marathon blues, and I believe in periodicity as well. I think you can have long term goals and still live in the moment. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Keep up the great work, Andy! I’m shifting to 10k and 5k this summer too before refocusing on a January marathon.

Yeah you sound very similar to me... I like to have those future goals for that reason too! Good lukc with your training!

I know you are all busy with your own RU-vid's. But it would be great to see an Andy, ben and ben video again. It has been a few years.

That’s the video I needed after running the Newport marathon (BQ in the bag too 😊). Next is the 10km Chippenham longest day end of June.

Interesting video thanks. In July after my next trail ultra I'll be focusing on a local 10k so a real plar opposite as ultra training is entirely different to even marathon training. However, my 10k expectations are pretty low so im just going to have fun with it

Do you ever notice increased running HR after a marathon? I am finding I just can't get my HR down despite running slower than pre marathon for my easy runs.

You are not alone. Mine is easy 8 beats higher than normal
@QuasiAmerican

@@thereids3625 good to know I'm not the only one. I doubt it's loss of fitness either as I only took 5 days off from running post marathon. I've been doing some reading about it and it seems that the effort and the heat during the marathon can cause symptoms of overtraining such as the increased HR and fatigue. I definitely feel more tired than usual so it makes sense.
@TheFODRunner
@TheFODRunner 2 месяца назад
Yes, very normal! It takes time for the fatigue from the marathon to fully leave... especially if we rush back into training... I often find around 5/6 weeks post marathon things start to calm down again!

What percentage of volume would you be training at when compared with marathon training? Around 75-80% but with some more intensity? Good luck for the race!

Well... when I could finally get proper training done after the illness, i was in the low 70s per week (miles) and I am back down to low 50s right now... so around 71/72%
