I have a folding 559 and a Catrike 700( non -folding trike). For ease and convenience I bought a Toyota Highlander and can slide either trike in easily without folding or being squeezed as a driver. The best solution is the Hitchrider trike racks. They have great RU-vid videos. Fabulous product, easy to install and can accommodate a single trike, two trikes or a combination of a trike and a conventional bike. Folding any trike is a pain in the butt and a dirty procedure and often times enough to keep one from making the effort to ride. Your clothes get greasy , car interior gets messed up and they are awkward at best when folded. I can load either of my trikes on my Hitchrider rack in 15 -30 seconds with no difficulty. If you have trouble lifting your trike they even have a lever that tilts the rack to the ground to just roll it in. If one can spend $4k and more for a trike then the best accessory going is a Hitchrider. They can mount on any sedan, SUV, or truck. I have driven my trikes from New England to Florida and back 3 times using mine without incident. BTW….I am NOT a paid individual shilling for the company. Just a very satisfied customer. Watch their videos and buy one. You’ll never fold a trike ever again.
My 559 fits folded and unfolded into my Toyota Yaris. When unfolded I put it in rear wheel first with some of the rear wheel between the front seats. Backseats folded down of course. This works well for local transport, like to the bike shop.
I do the same putting my ICE Adventure 20 into a friend's Subaru Crosstrek. It helps that I have a 20" rear wheel. I have to remove the seat. But it works; we have carried it up to 70 miles in this configuration.
@@paleolith99 fortunately I can start all my riding from home and safely connect to a good trail network. Only use the car taking the trike to the shop. Always rode my bike from home too, where ever we lived.
For anyone who hauls their trike outside of their vehicle, is there a good way to protect the trike from rain and road grime? The covers I have seen are for storage only.
Totally get it, my wife is a grandma with 3 toddler seats in her SUV. She has to take them out to fit in her trike. Since it has a motor she uses the aluminum ramps we talk about in other video. Cheers!
All good but I am not strong enough to keep it from tipping and clunking on the ground. And folded, is it really OK to rest it on the derailer and battery holder?
I have a 559 that I normally fold up inside my Tesla, but I recently added a new mid drive motor (8 pounds) which was not an issue. But I stuck the battery behind the seat on the chain side, so now that battery bracket is what the trike rests on when folded and it is also too tall to fit inside for now. So I am finding a new spot for the battery that isn't either side of the rear wheel. In the meanwhile I can fit the 559 unfolded in my Explorer, so I can ride it. When folding the trike into the Tesla, I put a piece of cardboard on top of the folded seats which both protects the carpet and seat backs, and also makes it easy to slide the trike around into position
Using cardboard in the back is a great idea - we often use that method or suggest it to riders that want to keep the car and trike a bit safer from scuffs.
Do you know if two trikes will fit in a 6-1/2 ft. truck bed without leaving the tailgate down? One trike is a small rear wheel villager, and the second trike is a large rear wheel 559.
Depending on the trike, you may have to use a chain gobbler like this laidbackcycles.com/products/catrike-chain-tensioner-gobbler?_pos=1&_sid=4f5063350&_ss=r
Depending on the size and specs of the vehicle, you can: put it in the back with the seats down, get a hitch rack, put it on top with straps. Those are generally the options - if you have a hitch or can install one that's a great option.
Pretty sure my SUV is too short to fit my non-folding trail. I modified it to a 26" rear wheel so its a good 6 1/2 feet like the 559 and measuring that, it goes well over the center console and still sticks out the back. I haven't had the trike out of the house in 3 damn years since its such a pain to maneuver around the place and theres no proper bike storage at my apartment building... not riding it is a sad story really !
My Catrike Expedition fit in my old Sorento and Ram pickup bed just fine like you show with the 559. When I went to the Catrike Dumont, that wasn't the case. Those couple inches made it so I couldn't close the Ram's tailgate and folding it to fit in the Sorento is so awkward that my bad back couldn't handle making the "off-balance" lifting position. If anyone has a Dumont and is looking for a vehicle that will fit the trike unfolded, the Kia Carnival (must remove center 2nd row seat) or the Kia Telluride are excellent vehicles for the $$$. Removing the middle seat from the second row in the Carnival still gives six seats for passengers when the trike isn't inside. I've been waiting for the Pandemic pricing to subside before pulling the trigger on a Kia Carnival.
Thanks for the tips. My challenge was to transport my recumbent trike and my wife's upright bike. The trike does not fit into my car easily. The options for a receiver mount rack were very limited. I have been happy with my Hollywood rack.
@@stevehickman8040 Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at the Alpaca racks and the Hitchrider racks when I needed a rack 2 years ago. Neither one seemed to be suited to haul a step-through bike. As I remember, many racks were out of stock at the time.
Check out this video on the ramps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X31FxAlTxOQ.html You can purchase the ramp here: laidbackcycles.com/products/recumbent-trike-ramp-adjustable-7foot
