AIFA is the newest airport in Mexico City. The only problem is that it is located 30 miles outside of the city. This is not uncommon for airports, but with the Mexico City Traffic it can take some people up to 2 hours to get from the airport to the city. Felipe Angeles International has a few things to figure out before it can reach is potential. Time will tell if it was a good decision for Mexico City.

Heathrow is not in the center of London and is a very busy airport. Once they get the rail line in place this new airport will take off. I agree with it's construction. Nothing that el PRI or el PAN would have initiated would have been free of massive corruption.

Exactly. I think it took me about 30 minutes by train to go to Victoria Station last time I went. I believe the new train that will be in use next year will help alleviate the time & price of moving to the city, but still.. not everything should be mexico city centric... like there is so many people moving from other states to use the airport, so this can be used for other locals to that airport, which makes the old one less saturated.

It's a great airport--already used twice myself. Most airports around the world are at this distance from the city center, so it's really not a big deal, and when the suburban rail service is inaugurated this December, it''ll be that much easier to get to. All in all, I think those against it are DEAD wrong and have probably not even been there--it's so much more than just an airport.

As a mexican citizen I greatly appreciate your views about our new international airport. Most reviews are from locals, and like you they leave AIFA with a positive opinion -aside from transport options to Mexico City and distance to downtown. Some annotations: *As mentioned by other users, this airport had one major goal from the beginning: de-saturate MEX with more slots to accomodate passenger service, cargo and general aviation. It is a "soft-start" approach which in the year 5 months of operation gave AIFA a place in the top 10 most used airports. Right now serves about 250,000 passengers/month, with plans to double that number by the end of 2023 once FAA's Category 1 resumes. *Rail link to Mexico City will be completed by summer 2024. Suburbano terminal inside AIFA and 8 km of railway were completed way beyond schedule; only problem is the connection with System 1 main branch, right now under construction. Couldn't be ready from the start because there were (and still are) land acquisition and rail invasion issues along the route. Another problem is that freight routes had to be relocated. *This airport was completed in three years. Texcoco wouldn't be halfway through right now even if construction would have continued. That 30% completion as of 2018 was deemed false and debunked by former Communications and Transport Secretary Javier Jiménez Espriú. He wrote a book about AMLO's decision to cancel Texcoco from an engineer perspective. In sum, he explains that construction companies were forced to lie about date of completion because soil was sinking more rapidly and more unstable than anticipated, so they had to use more construction materials to stabilize the terrain for runways and terminal building. He also detailed how this project was financed with public debt and questionable private ventures which would have given way above interest returns to investors. We're talking about a budget of 500 billion pesos against the original 85 billion. AIFA topped up to 75 billion pesos. *Mexico City main airport cannot be closed right now. One condition for Texcoco was to finance construction with an increase to the Use of Airport tax. TUA taxes on AIFA are lower, hence the cheaper flights. Unfortunately, after Texcoco cancellation the original airport kept working and now has a 20 year-ish debt which will be only paid by giving service two more decades. *AIFA is HUGE. Not only they gave space to a civil-militar airport: new military facilities were constructed in the form of housing, an airbase, administrative buildings, convention centers and museums, one of which was created because during construction they found A LOT of mammoths. Hope you can visit Museo del Mamut next time.

@BookItTravel Год назад
Thanks for all the information! I did read about a few of your points relating to finance and construction related to the Use of Airport Tax. Really complex stuff. I totally see the reason AIFA is a huge success so far. It was way easier than I thought to get into CDMX. Just cost prohibitive for some. Overall it was a great experience. I enjoyed your investigative journalism meets travel vlog report. You did not share that with the construction of AIFA, Benito Juarez was also upgraded, and the total savings that came with the cancellation of the starchitect Texcoco airport possibly amounted to US $5 billion. AMLO sold the presidential jet--whose opulence he called "pharonic--and instead flies coach on commercial airlines! He also converted the similarly luxurious presidential mansion, Los Pinos, into a museum, and occupies more modest digs in a government building on the Zocalo. He is a hero, a once in a hundred(+) years world leader.

I was disappointed when AMLO stopped the new airport at TEXCOCO. However now I understand the corruption of prior President, plus the environmental disaster it would have been. Plus so many people who lived there were displaced. The massive Ecological Park now being built at Texcoco will benefit the environment greatly , plus migratory birds will return. The people living there that had been bisplaced will have many work opportunities now. Also, newest airport, Felipe Angeles was built with Military personnel much cheaper, and a new road (bridge) has already been built to reduce the commute time to Felipe Angeles and by next year a rail will be done to connect Felipe Angeles to Buena Vista ( northern side of CDMX) with easy connections to Mexico's Metro.

Much difference. It is an Honor to be with President Obrador Viva México. The people who live in that urban area of Texcoco were consulted, which is why there are a million or so. There are other precedents where the people of that area did not want them to build there because it is a project that they had wanted to build since the six-year term of President Vicente Foz Quezada with the demonstration and then repression of Atenco in the State of Mexico where the airport was going to be built. from texcoco the airport cancelled. This in 2006 is that, it is not a whim, the cancellation of the airport already came with disputes over the lands that were taken from the farmers in Texcoco. And apart from that, that lake is a natural habitat for many species and migratory birds. You can't see much water because they emptied it, dried it, but little by little the lake is recovering. In the question of corruption, when they stopped the work, it had a progress of 22% and a budget of 180%, that is why we know that there is corruption to understand, they had already spent 100% of the budget, it is billions of dollars, apart from 80% more and only They had 22% progress in work in 5 years. It only took two years and five months of construction to inaugurate Mexico's new air terminal: Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). Much difference. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also referred to by the acronym AMLO, is a Mexican politician and writer. He is the current president of the United Mexican States since December 1, 2018. ---------------------- This President AMLO is building thousands of works including dams, irrigation trails, and a tree planting program of more than a billion trees. He is supporting people with money that arrives every two months. They are building artisanal roads in several states of the country. They are building mega projects like the AIFA airport, they are building a second airport in Tulum Quintana Roo. They are building the Ismo of Tehuantepec train, a train that connects the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean. The MAYA Train, which has 1,554 kilometers of tracks, will be a tourist, passenger and cargo train. It will pass through many cultural complexes in several States. The Chapultepec Park is being improved. The new ecological park of Lake Texcoco. A park with sports fields, cycle paths, and a wide variety of things such as nurseries, amphitheaters, viewpoints. I understand that this park is the size of New York City, something very gigantic. It bought most of the power plants of the Spanish company Iberdrola because they are stubborn about privatizing and they were already achieving it. It has greatly reduced the interest on the external debt with renegotiations or paying the debt because the interests were exorbitant. Bad public officials from past administrations contracted debt with very high interest but it is collusion between the authority and the International Monetary Fund. They have built many universities in rural areas, they are called Benito Juarez universities. They are building more than 3 thousand new branches of the new Mexican bank called Banco del Bienestar. They have built more than 400 barracks for the National Guard, which is a police force prepared to combat the mafia. It is equipped with everything: helicopters, armored vehicles, patrols, they are well armed, those with a suit with a white and gray fuse. The new two-mouth refinery in Paraiso Tabasco called Refineria Olmeca. It has already begun to refine and has passed all the tests and it is expected in December 2023 to be producing 280 thousand barrels of fuel and by 2024 it will reach its maximum capacity of 340 thousand barrels per day. This refinery has its own power plant, and is low in sulfur. They have also been rehabilitating the other 6 refineries and in two of them a machine called Coking Plant is being built, which is an investment of 10 billion dollars. This is the new refinery that Mexico bought, the Deer Park refinery in Texas. There are so many things that this AMLO Government has done without putting the country in debt with public money, which is why it says that money pays off when it is not stolen and this government is an example of when money is used well. --------------------- Abstract: This work focuses on the social movement that emerged over a decade ago in the town of Atenco in the State of Mexico, which triggered a series of farmers', workers' and popular demonstrations to appropriate and defend the land, which belongs to the Metropolitan Zone of Mexico City (ZMCM). The movement, defined from the beginning as opposing the proposal to build the international airport, is not finished business, as it has given rise to a new form of social organization in Atenco. Ten years later, Atenco's socio-urban and political configuration has changed, and today it is a territory with the characteristics of the urban dynamic, and a new social and political profile. --------- There are other failed projects from previous neoliberal governments. This is another work that was going to complement the failed Texcoco airport that was supposedly inaugurated in 2018 by President Enrique Peña Nieto, but it was only a small section because in reality the work was unfinished, they were only 18% complete. A budget exceeded by 170%. To understand or understand better, the government of President Lopez Obrador had to inject money from the budget to finish the work because they considered it a waste to leave it. And in fact, the Mexico Toluca InterUrban Train is already being completed in 2023, and a section is already being tested and running. They are going to rename the passenger train the insurgent. Mexico-Toluca interurban train will be called "El Insurgente". That connects the city of Toluca in the State of Mexico with Mexico City. The Interurban Train will travel 58 kilometers between Toluca and Mexico City. In the same way they inaugurated hospitals but they were pure facade, unfinished works, works without anything, they only finished the front facades to inaugurate. In the Government of President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa 2006-2012 they built a refinery but it is only a perimeter fence of 600 million dollars. A vacant lot is nothing, it was just a waste of billions of dollars. The good news is that current President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is building a Hospital, a giant clinic to serve the population that surrounds that area. An IMSS is built on those lands of the refinery that were never built, only a perimeter fence remained. Besides, those neoliberal dictator presidents put the country in debt.

You forgot something key to the cancellation of the NAICM, it was being built on unsafe ground (a former lagoon), and even as it was being built, it was already sinking. The UNAM conducted a ground study and it concluded that such a gigantic structure should not be built there. Because of the constant, massive sinking, the runways would have to be re carpeted yearly, and that billionaire contract was conveniently handed to a Peña Nieto ally. Not to mention that the former president had worked another sweetheart deal with another buddy of his to hand him the grounds of the current AICM to build luxury apartments once it shut down. Although the Norman Foster designed airport was indeed pretty cool, the project, although it was already several years behind schedule, it was already twice over cost. A monumental robbery to Mexican taxpayers that would not have an end in sight.

But bombing out water during raining season would be required nevertheless, with a very high cost obviously. The "Tren Suburbano station" will help a lot on the transportation subject. I'm proud this fully functioning airport has been delivered in quick time. AMLO has begun addressing the previous governments' watefulness and syphoning of much needed state funds via dodgy contracts to friends. We need these funds not for fancy airports and presidential planes (sold) to address poverty and launch a national free health service. There is a fast train service coming which will cut costs and speed up transfers to the centre. AMLO has shown we can deliver train services, see the new Insurgente service and Tren Maya for example. London Gatwick is a good comparison to AIFA which will play a full role in due course.

The Texcoco airport site is now being turned into the biggest ecological park in the world and huge areas have been declared protected areas. You should take a look on that project Parque Ecológico Lago de Texcoco. It’s not just the ecological damage that would have cause building an airport there, but it would have also cause a huge water shortage for Mexico City and the Metropolitan area. In the Felipe Ángeles there wasn’t any corruption simply because it wasn’t build by private contractors, the project was led by army corps of engineers, and the construction workers were hired by them. That is why the airport built on solid ground were the Santa Lucía military air base that has been operating for several decades, and it still is, but now renovated and operates simultaneously with the airport terminal, was build it in record time in 2.5 years. A urban train that will go from Mexico City Center to the Felipe Ángeles Airport will start operations in March next year. The army corps of engineers are currently building the new Tulum International Airport “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” and it set to conclude construction next year.

"Why would you build an airport 48 Km from the city center?" Firstly, it's like 35 Km away in a straight line, but the current roads to get there are like 46, 47 Km, yes. Also, there's a train under construction to connect it with downtown(ish) in ~40 min (40-45 Km of tracks, I guess). Now, have you checked other big cities/ major airports in the World? Denver, Shanghai PVG, and Istambul SAW are at similar distances, for example. Narita is like 60 Km away from central Tokyo... Once the AIFA train opens, it could actually be more a desirable trip that the current airport, which has limited and inconvenient transit links, and which suffers from chronic traffic jams around it, not to mention that the AIFA (NLU) terminal is much nicer.

AIFA is an awesome airport. I went there more than a month ago, but the only downside is that it's faaaaaar. From the bus terminal, I took the Metro and the Mexibus because it was the cheapest way to get there. It only cost me $25 pesos in total. But it took me almost 3 hours to get there. Basically took longer than what it took to arrive to Mexico City from the state of Guerrero. But yea, the airport was very nice and clean. I mean CLEAN af.

A taxi is the costliest option from any airport in Mexico. So, as part of the project, the Felipe Angeles airport includes a passenger train station inside of it which is being finished. Also I heard of a bus station. So when finished, these 2 options (train, bus) will cause the cost to go down a lot. Just be patient, a huge project like this can not be completed in weeks. Greetings.

Thanks for the information. I have not yet flown to AIFA but one of the disadvantages for me will be that it was built so far from Mexico city. When I travel back to my city in Mexico, I need to take a bus going south. I go through Puebla, and continue south to Veracruz. I would have a long ways to go if flying to the new airport. However, every time I fly to Benito Juarez, the airport that is IN Mexico city, I get delayed from one to two hours. So in reality, it will be the same for me, timewise. But more than that, I hate the old airport with all the traffic and delays and issues they are facing now. So a new airport needed to be erected. Where do you build a airport in a city like Mexico city? The president before AMLO, decided Texcoco. Texcoco was a lake that dried up with time. The amount of material that would be needed to make the ground firm enough for big, heavy airplanes to land, would have been very expensive and complicated. Good call in the cancellation. Bad choice for the new location? Either way, AMLO is a president that came out with good and functional projects. The airport was built just in time. Benito Juarez needs relief for sure! Have you heard of the transoceanic project AMLO has in southern Mexico? That project is to move goods from one ocean to other side ocean. That is a project that is being built just in time. The Panama canal has issues when precipitation is below the expected amount. AMLO is ready to move the goods in 2024. Is AMLO a good president or is he just lucky? Not to mention the refinery he recently inaugurated so we become energy-independent from other countries....What do you think my friend?

About the referendum some comments. - it was no necessary. Texcocos's cancellation was a part of the electoral campaign of Lopez Obrador - use of referebdums (referenda?) as requisit for significant projects was also part of the electoral campaing of Obrador - the referendum came because he was challenged by the media to submit the projects he wanted to a referendum. - as you mentioned only a small portion of the population participated, which means that for the rest it was ok what the participants decided, and they decided to cancell Texcoco - Texcoco was never submited to citizens approvement. It was an imposed decision and promoted by corporated media.

As you pointed out it’s cheaper . The Texcoco airport yes , it was a beautiful project but they killed people to take their lands , dried a natural lake , the cost was an estimated cost and it could’ve been concluded in 2030, if ever like most projects the corrupt politicians did . It would have been extremely expensive to drain constantly and put make it a solid ground . Also it would have been extremely comfortable for politicians and oligarchs BUT it was being financed with MONEY OF RETIREMENT PENSIONS of all the country for a one city airport and the gains for the oligarchs . AMLO offered them to continuo if they put their own money and they didn’t want . Also where AIFA is , they were planning to acquire those lands for nothing to build residential buildings . AMLO paid the contractors , not only built that airport but all the entire military city surrounding the airport , hotels , mall, hospital , the ecological park in Texcoco and 2 museums cos they discovered hundred of mamut bones while building it and we saved a billion . Plus it was built up in 2 years during the pandemics and AMLO had to revert legally all the “legal” protection the corrupt ones got more than 300 , as they own the judges as well. In Benito Juárez airport they discovered it was controled by the narcs and even got a code for stopping every flights and stuff to transport drugs . That’s why the marines are in charge of the airport customs now . I really don’t know why do you complain about the taxi cost and time . When I fly to NYC it’s about the same price and nearly and hour to Manhattan . In London it’s like 100£ to the main Lo don area and it takes 1.5 h. By the way at AIFA the fees for transportation which in double the price are a fix 25 dollar so flights are extremely cheaper . There must be already a train that will reach CDMX in 30 min , AMLO had to end another inconclusive project of Trains by Peña Nieto initially 30 billion project , it never developed but the money was gone and AMLO ended it in 2 years time also and it ended up in 90 billion after the pandemics payment of those 30 billion to angry contractors included , and it was inaugurated in September 15th 2023 which connects AIFA .

At this point Texcoco project would still be under construction costing billions. AIFA airport showed that we can construct a world class airport without spending billions and in record time! So, it absolutely worth to cancel Texcoco project, because they didn’t allowed the former government to get away with their plans which were never asked to the people, they also stopped a massive ecosystem destruction and build a better distributed airport for the city growth in the next decades. So I totally agree that the new airport (AIFA) is absolutely a better idea.

AMLO's reasoning to cancel the NAIM, was to "stop" corruption. He stated his plan was better: to improve the Benito Juarez, and to build a new airport that would supplement the existing ones. However, 2 years after the opening of AIFA, the Benito Juarez is falling apart, no one is in jail for the "corruption" in the NAIM, and hardly anyone wants to fly from the AIFA. I like the AIFA, but what was wrong in having a world class airport in CDMX?
