00:00 Packing Hack Introduction
Packing for travel can already be challenging but for a classic clothing enthusiast, it can be even more so, due to all the bits & bobs we have in our wardrobe. This can lead to potential overpacking, returning from several trips having taken items “just in case” that are never used.
00:57 Why Travel With Only One Bag?
→ Most airlines make you pay for a checked bag, with only one bag (carry-on) for free
→ Only one bag to think about
→ Less chance of losing things
→ Most flights and trains have food & drink facilities so you don’t need to pack snacks
→ Can get on and off vehicles easier
→ Makes you more mobile at your destination
02:22 What to Wear When Travelling
Note: All of the suggestions in today’s video can relate to any “weight” depending on the season/weather you’re traveling in/to.
→ Wear Real Clothes To Travel
→ Wear a versatile suit
→ Wear formal shoes
→ Wear Classic Accessories
→ Pack, don’t wear Cufflinks
05:02 Packing for a Short Trip
→ Pack an odd jacket and trousers
→ Pack a spare pair of shoes
→ Pack a fresh shirt for each day of the trip
→ Pack a Merino wool sweater or cardigan
→ Pack 2 Ties, 2 Pocket Squares
08:07 Packing For a Longer Trip
Note: these next selections build on previous selections.
→ Add an extra suit
→ Add a Waistcoat
→ At least 18 combinations now!
→ Add a couple of extra accessories
→ Add an extra pair of shoes
→ Add a couple of extra accessories
09:40 Perfect Packing Pointers
→ Aim for versatility
→ Reduce the size of things wherever possible
→ Include a spare “emergency” bag
→ Allow for wild weather changes
→ Don’t rely on just one pair of shoes
→ Take minimal toiletries
→ Make sure you can fit your traveling clothes into your case
→ Use a hard case
→ Make sure the case has a divider
→ Consider “packing cubes” for underwear, socks, and used clothes
By the way, don’t feel you have to adhere to the one-bag rule if you’re going for a particularly long vacation or special event, it’s certainly worth paying a little extra to know you’ll have everything you need. This is especially true for black & white tie scenarios.

Protip if you're checking a bag - always wear and/or pack the items you'd be the most sorry to lose in your carry-on. That way if the worst does happen and your luggage ends up lost in the Lost Baggage Abyss, you can replace your less-favorite options without worrying about losing the cashmere sweater that was handed down from your grandfather or your favorite pair of antique cufflinks.

Gentlemen! With my recent travel experiences, I’d highly recommend a second piece of luggage if you’re doing one or more layovers or connections. My checked suitcase sat at my first connecting airport as it had only been tagged that far.And I know you frown upon backpacks but they’re less likely to be involuntarily checked and you can stuff it under the seat (I have an antique looking leather one). Seven hours of flights turned into 24 and spanned a continent (flew right over my destination) Spent overnight in a connecting airport, and the last leg was by bus. Having a spare shirt, socks, underwear, undershirt and travel sized toothbrush and deodorant came in very handy. Edit: Tracking chips are an excellent accessory too. It took three more days for the airline to reunite me with my luggage. They are less likely to throw up their hands and say they can’t find it when you can show them exactly where it is via your phone.

The guidance for versatility is a really good one. Having more outfits because you can have several combinations is terrific advice. To save on packing too many shirts/underwear/socks: pack sheets of laundry detergent that you can use to wash and then reuse those undergarments. Whether you have checked-in bags or not, make sure your carry on has a decent set of clothes if your checked-in bag is lost or fails to make it to your destination (as it has with me). Also consider that the outfit that you wear on the plane can be repurposed as part of your travel capsule wardrobe to further save on the number of garments that you need to stuff in your luggage.

#1 Have extra cash to ship your souvenirs. Sometimes you find things you can't buy online or your local shops. One time I recked the boxes of some collectibles in a carry on and was not happy. Just pack it right and ship it how you wish. #2 Have a virtual address to forward mail just in case. #3 have a passport. Sometimes your ID card doesn't scan right at TSA and the passport becomes a good backup.

I’d love to see a follow up for us more casual gents.

Generally speaking, I don’t pack toiletries. I usually travel with just a carry-on, and even though I have TSA PreCheck, I’ve experienced that PreCheck is not an option at an American airport before, so toiletries are an extra hassle at security. The minor cost to buy new travel sized toiletries at my destination, even overseas, is minimal, especially when considering the hassle of them through security.

It's difficult to stay classic when I visit NYC on those days when I walk from Chinatown to Central Park, and not in a straight line. I champion leather shoes, but in those situations, athletic footwear will keep me sane. It's too bad. I noticed that classic styles cater to gentlemen; and those gentlemen are not pushing their physical limits in a lounge suit and oxfords. So I pack for both occasions.

I do 95% of this! I travel a lot in the EU on wine trips and my steel or gold cuff links have never once set off the buzzer - neither have brass or steel collar stays. Maybe the US has stronger machines. Can I also suggest a soft felt hat for rainy days - I have one that can be crushed and pushed back into shape (bought in Meyers New Orleans in 2010). You definitely need a small bar of good soap - even in 5 star hotels the soap quality is often terrible. and while I usually bring a shirt per day, in reality I use less.

Although I always check a baggage (my credit card includes it so why cram everything?), would love to see a video on wrinkle free (or resistant) blazer recommendations. Although I wouldn't bring a suit with me unless I knew I was attending a formal event, there have been times when having a blazer would''ve been nice but I didn't want to spend my holiday ironing. The only times I've ever travelled with a suit, the flight attendants have always denied hanging it up for me, so now I try to avoid it. Having to literally hold your 3 piece tweed suit from Dublin to Toronto is not fun!

Been about 30 years since flight attendants have been called stewardesses. If you aren't in first class and you hand a coat or jacket to a FA they will look at you like you are from Mars. Always travel with plastic collar stays. Travel with silk underwear. One bag travel is great unless you are 6'5" 280 lbs. I can travel for 3 days with a 22" roller and max size personal roller bag. Consider 2 pant suits if you travel for business extensively. Multi Million Mile flyer.

Personally, I'm averse to travelling in today's airborne cattle trucks wearing a suit or any other tailored garment. I find them uncomfortable when crushed up in economy (which is the class in which most of the readers here travel I'm guessing). On expenses, sure, travel in a suit, but for slobby old me, casual is way more flexible and comfortable.
