The odd thing about the egg beater kick is to anyone watching you tread water, it looks almost like you're panicking, and having trouble treading, lol. It also feels kind of like trying to rub your belly and pat your head at the same time.
Yes, a new learner might look a bit distressed while learning eggbeater kick. However, I wouldn't say that anyone would feel like jumping in to save a Synchronized swimmer or a Water Polo player while they tread water 🤷♀️ Absolutely, it definitely feels like trying to rub a belly and pat the head, especially when doing eggbeater kick together with sculling.
Personally i think this is the best intro video i have watched, why? because it shows the turning of the leg and foot also, it shows both legs moving and then the rhythm for both the opposite directions, so thankyou.
Thank you very much for such a wonderful feedback about this tutorial! Are you learning how to perform this skill or looking for different ways of teaching it?
This video on egg-beater sculling is simply, well explained. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I'm just starting off ... first got started sitting on a noodle ... and I didn't get such detailed demonstration .. Now I think I'm better prepared to try it.
Hi madam my name is srivatsan from India. Very interested and nice tutorial. Ur method of step by step techniques is easily understood. Please post more videos 🙏

@@easyflowing I've learnt swimming in dribs & drabs over the years, and I still remember this one moment when I found myself in the 20-metre deep end of a pool and was very scared! I've started practising swimming again and wanted to learn this necessary skill of treading water :)
@@easyflowing I find the back float the most relaxing position. So, I now tell myself while practising freestyle that I can do that any time I get tired or am in the deep end, so there's no need to panic! :D But I haven't tried the opposite: switching to swimming freestyle from the back float. Also, I kind of think of it as simply flipping over. Is there a specific technique to doing either switch?
There are a couple ways to do it. One of them is the one you described, just flipping over the side. The other one is getting into a vertical position (Eggbeater and/or sculling) and lying down to float on the back, getting up into a vertical position and lying down to float on the stomach. I usually use it for working on balance in the water. We worked a lot on it here: Fear of Water (Lessons in Open Water): ru-vid.com/group/PLlni5Zb5tjJmZhWlFRqkpHdQOdy_eNzGC
Yes, it’s like tapping the top of your head with one hand and drawing circles on your stomach with the other 😅 Very true, it’s not easy! It’s fine to try working one hand at a time to mimic your feet. See if it gets easier. The only thing that’s going to be difficult with alternating your hands is figuring out when to angle hands and which way ☺️ Good luck. Please let me know how it goes 🙏
@@easyflowing I got a little too excited and almost killed my self I skipped through the patience and went diving in I was floating but the second I laughed I started sinking and drinking water I had to use the doggy paddle to get back to 5 feet
@Uslav That's exactly why it is necessary to practice in shallow water until certain water safety skills can be performed. Laughing is a different matter altogether, though. When you laugh, you exhale explosively and with no air left in your lungs, the body does sink if sculling isn't used. I am glad you were able to get to safety! Interestingly, in stressful situations, we tend to regress to the skills that are more embedded in our muscle memory (hence the doggy paddle) and new skills can partially get erased. That's why when I teach my clients, I ask them not to swim while practicing on their own until their new skills get firmly written into their muscle memory.
Tried it and i totally failed! oh,well..its hard to know what i might be doing wrong without a spotter! oh well, i dont give up easy though..so..maybe nxtym,id get it right!

Hey, thank you for watching my video and for your kind comment! Yes, it is all about going through the motion over and over again until you start feeling the water, and as you do it, you learn how to use this magical substance. Practice makes perfect!
Going swimming next week and I'm definitely trying this. I hope I get an a-ha moment this time. I've wanted to learn how to tread water for so long. Thank you for this video. 😊

Please do it with your instructor. I foolishly tried to do it alone on the deepest part of pool and just drowned. Saved by God's grace. But yes swimming is great
I am glad you are safe. In this video or in the description, I did suggest that one first needs to learn how to do sculling. Plus, new skills in deep water can be tried only if you can get yourself to and from a floating position and in a presence of a lifeguard. Also, you can always learn Eggbeater kick in the water that is chest deep. It’s unnecessary to try it in a deep end of a pool.
I was so confused by the leg movement. This helped out a ton. i almost drowned 3 times back when i didnt know how to tread water. this was really helpful. I also have a question, Do you recommend floating in your back or treading water?
I am glad you have survived the water when you didn't know how to tread it! It is great to hear that my instruction video was helpful in your learning process. I recommend learning both treading water and a back float. The sequence does matter, though. I prefer to teach how to balance in water vertically first and only afterwards I teach floating. Because one cannot survive in open water without knowing where to go, and being able to keep the head upright in water (just enough to figure out where safety is) is a priority in a survival situation in my opinion.
I like how this video is explained it helps but after trying to learn it after 3 days I got better but I still end up sinking and need my hands to stay afloat
Most helpful video. Most videos i see is the instructor is already submerged and I can’t figure out exact position of my legs. I’ll try this technique. I’m not new to swimming and I even took swimming lessons (that’s a long story) but I still didn’t conquer my fear of swimming in the deep end of the pool

Hi there! My goal is stay above the water 3 minutes with 3kg in my right arm, how much time i need to practice this ? All day ? And how much time? I have competition more 3 weeks. Thank you
In Synchronized Swimming, we practiced twice a day, six days a week... it's up to you how good you are to be. You can practice by doing laps treading water, with arms, sculling, with one arm out of the water, with both arms out of the water, with the weight...
I don't know your swimming and treading skill level. If I taught you face to face, three weeks probably would be enough. Otherwise, I cannot be sure, I have too little information.
Well, if that happens one day, then the whole world might think that the Messiah came back... let's first learn how to stay upright IN Water. (I really truly hope that you have a sense of humor that can resonate with mine! 🙏 😅) Keep practicing, it takes some time. Eventually, it all clicks together!
After watching your video, I have finally understood the movement of legs in egg beater kick. But I am still having a hard time sculling and kicking simultaneously. Can you give me any advice for that?
I am glad it finally clicked for you! Master each of these strokes separately, first. Then, practice slowly. Then, you can try alternating your sculling when you do Eggbeater kick. It probably will start occurring naturally as you keep working on it and start getting relaxed (when it becomes second nature for your body). Enjoy your practice. Keep me posted!
It's Important to get comfortable with every exercise in shallow water before moving deeper. Thank you. It’s all about getting the movement into muscle memory by practicing, first, in slow motion. After a while, you’ll get a feel for it. Good luck with your training!
Thank you for your instructions. I don't know why I can't really make a circular motion with my legs when I'm fully inside the water. I will try your method this afternoon. Thank you.
You are welcome. Keep in mind that the circular movement is from your hip joint, not the knee. Try this exercise in the water while holding onto the wall with your hands and one leg at a time. Go slowly first because you you need to get the movement into your muscle memory. You'll get it, you just need a lot of practice. 🙌
@@easyflowing That's so sweet of you for responding. Thanks for clarifying that it's from my hip not my knee. I will re-watch your video. I'm going to the pool this afternoon. Can't wait to try your technique.

@@easyflowing You are so nice. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Okay, I just got back from the pool. I tired your egg beater kicks holding onto the wall in a 13-feet deep pool. For the first time, I was able to move my legs in circles (instead of in and out) in a relaxing manner. Once I added my arms, I could do 3 seconds at best. However, I learned that I can use scissors kicks (I know it's the least efficient way), and I was able to do it for 1 minute TWICE!! I'm so happy. Next time, I will try adding egg beater kicks. I'm now feeling more confident. I think it's just a matter of time getting the egg beater kicks. Thank you. BTW, I have watched hours of tread water videos on YT, yours is the most graceful.
I am definitely going to practice this routine. I confuse myself during practice. It's not easy for me to look at my instructor underwater. I also read another viewer comment regarding being nerves at the deeper end. I agree with this comment. You stated to practice in shallow water first. When I tried in the past, I continued to til backward or go underwater. My instructor told me to push my pelvis upwards and still continue to til backward. Any recommendation? Thank you so much for your videos. It's so helpful to start fresh and remind calm.
This one isn't an easy skill to learn, so keep practicing. Since you aren't able to keep your body in a vertical position, it tells me that you are unable to keep balance in water. I would suggest for you to practice these exercises, they will help you with strengthening your muscles for balancing: Strength Exercises In Water For Balance And Swimming: ru-vid.com/group/PLlni5Zb5tjJmib-12WS1zD7KncCryC3pp PS some videos don't have sound. In any case, spend a lot of time on working with the ball on dry land on a handball half court or in a gymnasium with walls. Learn to throw and catch the ball with dominant and non dominant hands. If you want to become the best, you will have to do a lot of work on your own. If the pool isn’t available to work on your own, find dry land training and train on your own. Your legs, arms and core have to be very strong to do well, plus, you need to protect your joints by strengthening Water Polo specific muscle groups.
I can swim fine, my cardio overall is great and I’m generally fit But I know im dojng something wrong cus I get tired treading lol. Not sure how I can make this click in my brain
Well, there are many different reasons for getting tired while treading water. Number 1 is the fact that breathing in the water is more tiresome because of water pressure. Number 2 is because this movement is unusual for the body and it is in an unusual position, and muscles have to work harder. Plus, until the movement becomes a second nature to your body, it's going to continue to be tiresome. So, in order for your Eggbeater kick to become easier, you have to keep practicing. Also, you have to overload your body during the exercise (when the movement is perfected). For example, your kick can be practiced with hands in the water but not sculling. Then the hands can be gotten out of the water while treading. Then, the forearms can be lifted up while treading. Then, the arms can be lifted out of the water completely. Then, treading can be practiced with holding a dumbbell. Every level should be done when the previous one becomes easy. Also, general fitness should be continuously improved, and movement specific strength exercises should be done. I hope this helped.
@@easyflowing ah thank you! Ye I figured I should just keep doing it more. I guess I got a bit cocky starting off cus I can run a 6 min or less mile, but it’s a completely different ballgame in the water lol
It all depends on how comfortable you are in water to begin with, on how strong your core and leg muscles are, and on the amount of time and effort you put into learning this movement. First, you will learn the mechanics of the movement, then you’ll have to make this move a second nature (by practice, practice, practice) and then, you’ll start feeling it, meaning that you will start feeling actually using the water to tread water easily. Of course, after that, you can start working on your endurance to get even better at it.
The kick I teach here is the real athletic Eggbeater kick. We use it in Synchronized Swimming and in Water Polo. As far as teaching this complicated kick, transferring a stroke that you already understand is an easier way to teach/learn a new stroke. After getting alternating movement with breaststroke kicks, you would perfect your Eggbeater kick by doing it the way I teach here. Or, you can right away learn it correctly. It all depends on each individual style of learning and abilities. For example, when I work with a beginner swimmer and want to teach them Eggbeater kick for water safety, I start teaching the way I teach here because it wouldn't make any sense for me to teach a completely different stroke first. However, when I teach a swimmer who already knows how to do breaststroke kick properly, I base my teaching on what they already know and move forward from there. If you learn on your own, you can always choose exercises that are easier for your body and advance from there.
Thank you very much for such kind words! What kind of diving are we talking about? Surface dive? Head first dive from the side of a pool? Competitive dive? Holding breath for deep diving? Keeping water out of your nose?

No, you don't get the same efficiency when working in the opposite direction. In sports, it’s all about getting the best results with the least amount of energy expenditure. The way I describe it in my video is the optimal way to tread water. That’s why Synchronized swimmers and Water Polo players use it. A few comments back, I answered a similar question, you might want to look it up to get a fuller explanation. Please keep me posted on your progress ❤
Do you mean learning in 5 minutes or treading water using the Eggbeater kick for 5 minutes? If learning, then no, you cannot learn it in 5 minutes because it takes time and a lot of practice to get the movement into the muscle memory, and to get strong at it. If you are asking about treading for 5 min, then yes. Here's a video of me crossing a lake using only the Eggbeater kick: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oou2pxsKeVA.html
@@easyflowing thanks for sharing, I am struggling to learn water threading. For me, I am easily getting tired for threading water.. I can stand for 1 minutes
You are welcome. In order to go longer in treading water with Eggbeater kick, you need to get stronger at it. Just like in weight training or in running, you need to increase the difficulty level to get your muscles stronger. You can train by working with your legs twice faster for 10 seconds, then slow down for 20, faster 10, slower 20. This will give you the same minute but will improve your stamina and muscle strength. Also, you can do the same thing time wise but with lifting your arms out of the water all the way up for 10 seconds. The combinations are limitless. After you practice these exercises every day, for 3 to 5 repetitions, for about a month, check by how much your treading duration with improve. (Keep in mind that your general physical fitness has to be on par with the physiological load you'll undertake with these exercises). I'd love to know how it goes after you do these. Please, keep me posted!
Well executed. I have watched many different other videos not yours. But your videos are the top of my list I must say that. Your accent is amazing too 😊
I just discovered your chain, and I hope it's not too late, because I learned to do the egg beater but backwards (I turn my right foot clockwise and my left foot anti clockwise, unlike what you do) I wonder if it's not correct ??
Think of the Eggbeater kick as an alternating breaststroke kick. Next time you are in the pool, try doing a breaststroke kick, the way you described it. Please let me know how far and how fast you’ll be able to go. After that, try to do your breaststroke kick vertically correctly and alternate the movement. When I first learned how to do Eggbeater kick, I simply went through the motion, without feeling the power. Eventually, I just started feeling movement of water under my feet. See if you could correct your movement, even if it feels weird, at first. Tiger Woods changed his golfing style after he became a pro and see where it got him 😉 In sports, it’s all about getting best results with least amount of energy expenditure. The way I describe it here is the optimal way to tread water. That’s why Synchronized swimmers and Water Polo players use it.

If you lean back a little bit, your feet will come up. Just make sure that you control where you are moving, don't go to deep water if you are not a strong swimmer. You can see the different angles in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oou2pxsKeVA.html And here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FGJSdiYtlc8.html Also, keep your knees higher up, closer to the surface.
@@easyflowing Thanks for very quick reply I appreciate it, , but I need practise first in shallow water so if I lean back, you mean I will move in a direction and not stay in one place?I mean I want to tread in one place and not moving
Yes, if you lean back, you'll move backwards. If you want to stay in place, bring up your knees to hip level and make sure that your legs and feet make circular movement in a transverse plane, instead of kicking down. Make circles, not alternating breaststroke kicks.
I am ecstatic to hear about your achievement!!! It's great to know that I could help, thank you for letting me know! ❤️ How long did it take you to get it and how much did you have to practice?

Hi! I'm a 31 year old beginner. I tried to tread water today but it felt so exhausting I can only do it for 10 seconds. What could be possibly wrong with my movements?
What can I say, swimming is a set of a specific type of skills in a very special environment. So, your body must be prepared for it more than for any other physical activity. If we are talking just about swimming, then you have to have a general physical fitness because water relaxes muscles, tendons and even your ligaments, so you have to make sure that your muscles are extra strong in order to protect your joints. Plus, there are swimming specific muscle groups that need to be strengthened in order to be able to float, to keep a streamline position and to propel yourself as fast as you would like to and as long as you want to. Swimming specific muscles (just for freestyle) include but not limited to: your core (abs, obliques, erector spinae, glutes, upper back), your medial deltoids, triceps, lats, gastrocnemius, inner thighs, forearm muscles, etc. In this particular video, you are learning to tread water, so, in addition to all of those, your hamstrings, tibialis anterior, tibialis posterior and peroneus muscles have to be strong... In short, what I am trying to say, any type of exercise is a science, if you want to stay healthy as you learn these wonderful new skills, take it seriously. And, as my client, whose training sessions I am going to post in the near future said: ‘being fit is one thing BUT being fit for swimming is a whole different level of fitness’. Meaning: it will be difficult and you will have to work on your strength and endurance through a lot of muscle ache!!!
To start strengthening your muscles, you can follow exercise in this playlist: First Steps to Swimmingru-vid.com/group/PLlni5Zb5tjJn7jCl1Senai_MSqN6s7hGp
Thank you so much for your prompt reply! Your videos are very helpful to me. I'll keep on practicing. I couldn't even go 1/2 lap when I started but now I'm improving slowly but surely. Swimming has done wonders for my physical and emotional health so I don't want to stop doing it. I have been watching plenty of videos to improve my skills and you are one of my favorites. More power to you! 👐😀
It’s great to hear that you are improving and thank you for choosing me as one of your guides! Now I am actually in the process of filming my work with a client who has a fear of water, so we took it from the very beginning. We are using a lot of exercises from the playlist First Steps To Swimming and adjusting them for open water. Stay tuned for more valuable videos 😊
It’s like a breaststroke kick. However, because one leg is working at a time, your hips slightly twist and that makes the movement look and feel circular. If it’s easier for you to understand the movement as an alternative breaststroke, then do it as you understand it. Some tutorials do teach it as such. Although, when you do your breaststroke, the foot doesn’t move inside, in eggbeater, it does. But again, it’s because of extra hip movement and movement of your thighs in a transverse plane... It gets too complicated if you try to analyze it. So, at first, do it the way you can understand it the best. Later on, you will feel what makes your stroke stronger.
Thank you for asking. The best method is the one that keeps you afloat with more ease. This method, if perfected, doesn't make your body bob, keeping your at the same level, which is energy conserving. Synchronized Swimmers and Water Polo players use this method because it's the most efficient.
Thank you! To be able to tread water with hands out of the water, the kick has to be very fast. Keep practicing to make it stronger. Do whole laps of doing Eggbeater kick from one side of the pool to the other and in different directions. Work up to doing 10-20 laps only Eggbeater kick first with sculling and then with your hands hugging you so that your legs would work alone. This video will be helpful with changing directions: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FGJSdiYtlc8.html
As you described the motion, it isn't the optimal way to tread water with the eggbeater kick. The best way to tread water is the one that gives you the best result with the least amount of energy spent. The kick where the left leg goes clockwise and the right leg goes counter clockwise is the most optimal way, that's why Synchronized Swimmers and Water Polo players do it this way.
@@easyflowing Thanks! I asked because I learned it wrong and have trained myself to rotate left leg counter clockwise and right clockwise. And now I am struggling to correct the technique

It's good to start practicing this kick in shallow water, after getting good at sculling (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y936b_BAcIA.html)
Greetings ma'am I've been practicing. I just had this one doubt, are we supposed to make the circles only directed inwards i.e. clockwise for the left leg and anti clockwise for the right? Thank you (because in frog kick of breast stroke both the legs direct outwards, so it get's confusing) Thank you :)
It’s a great question and you are not the first one to ask it. It’s almost exactly like a frog kick just alternating. One must have strong core muscles and overall strong frame in order to stay injury-free when learning any specific athletic skill.
And it’s almost like a frog kick because since the legs work with an alternating motion, much more rotation movement happens in hip joint and even some in the spine. You can see it in my underwater shots.
I am glad to hear back from you. The more you practice consistently, the faster this kick will become second nature to you. After awhile, you won't have to think about what you do in this kick, you'll just do it. So, practicing every day will get you desired result faster. Keep up the good work!!!
