In this video, I offer exercises that have helped my clients to get their feet up and to overall improve their streamline position. Please consult your doctor before starting any physical activity. And, please, warm up, first.
A prerequisite skill for exercises in this video is basic sculling. Here is a video for sculling:

Also, it’s all about your core. If you are unable to contract your muscles correctly, your swimming lessons will be a struggle all the way and you won’t be able to achieve results you are after. I suggest to work on your core strength with these exercises:

Another excellent instructional video i arch my whole body and head back pressing DOWN in the water to float on my back , i float like a cork then. Even if i blow all the air out of my lungs i only sink a little my face is still out of the water i am neutral boyancy which is common for most men i think, i do pilates exercising which is very good for swimming i find. Another drill i practice is to roll over on my back & flip and float, i practice the eggbeater kick but still have to scull to stay afloat.

I float like a stone, and drop slowly to the bottom of the pool and stay there until I swim back up. Swimming is a bit harder for some. Please do not make assumptions. Not everyone floats naturally.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 5 лет назад
No assumptions are made here. That’s why I suggest to learn sculling to those people who have 0 or low buoyancy. With lungs full of air (held), sculling and correct muscle control, you’ll be unstoppable ☝️
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 5 лет назад
And for your convenience, I have created a playlist that has to do only with sculling: Swimming Lessons. Sculling ru-vid.com/group/PLlni5Zb5tjJksa9gyNU5KzbHR_A9rn4jE

Some of us do sink like a stone. It is true that a full chest of air will keep us on top, BUT, at some point you have to exhale. At that point I too sink like a stone to the bottom. It is hard to breath properly if you can only hold your lungs full of air. I can indeed stay on top with just my mouth sticking out of the water if I am sculling and moving my legs. That lasts until a wave washes over my face just as I take another breath. I swim under water very well, but would drown quickly in the deep end. I can only scull so long. Hard to understand if you are a cork.
@easyflowing

Last week I talked to a guy from Jamaica who can’t float but is a great swimmer 🤷‍♀️ Endurance is trained. It’s difficult to tread water at the beginning for everyone. As a matter of fact, absolutely everything is difficult at the beginning. You can either make excuses or find a way to learn the skills you want to learn. In swimming, one exhales slowly and not completely, and inhales fast. If you breathe for floating, exhale has to be fast with a faster inhale. Imagine this, even correct breathing doesn’t come naturally and must be practiced 😳 JUST LIKE EVERYTHING IN THIS LIFE THAT HAS VALUE. Everything that has value is earned.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 5 лет назад
@Doug and @Merlyn When I teach my clients who have a fear of water, I do suggest to use a wetsuit. With the fear, the body isn’t able to relax and buoyancy is lost. It’s a little easier to learn when there is that extra layer of protection or buoyancy. When the body learns correct positioning, it gets easier to get to the next level. In any case, I am in Upstate New York. I can teach you to float (with sculling) and to tread water in 10 sessions. If you are up for it, I am ready for this exciting challenge. If you choose to be filmed, I will give you a 50% discount. I hate empty talk, I can prove that what I teach, works.

Also people are either floater or sinker something a swimming coach will almost never tell you..none of us struggle with floating we struggle with moving and propelling at first and then we learn it as long as we can float...so if you struggle with floating chances are youre a sinker so stop wasting your time and get yourself a cute live-vest and jump into the deep end and have fun.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 11 месяцев назад
@Omar9inchShatty Floating can be a complicated skill for many reasons, including the one you mentioned. That's why I never start teaching my students floating until they can balance themselves vertically. But suggesting for a new learner to jump in at the deep end, even with a floatation device, is simply unwise.

This is the video I've been searching for. Floating on my back is very difficult for me. I'm 6'4" 220lb muscular and my legs are dropping when I try to float and also during backstroke. I think the wetsuit is likely helping you float a bit but fundamentally the tips appear sound so I'm going to work on the tips in this video at my local public pool. Thank you!
@easyflowing
@easyflowing Год назад
Yes, these exercises will definitely help you! In this video, I am wearing a simple polyester full body suit, so no, it doesn't help me float... my fat does, though 😊 so yes, the right skills make all the difference because without the correct skills, neither a wetsuit, nor some extra fat won't help all that much. You can see it in these series, where my beginner swimmer student was wearing a 5 mm wetsuit but until he learned the skills, the suit didn't do much: Fear of Water (Lessons in Open Water): ru-vid.com/group/PLlni5Zb5tjJmZhWlFRqkpHdQOdy_eNzGC

@@easyflowing Your tips helped. I already have the strength but I wasn't applying the correct techniques. As soon as I started working on the correct body position and engaging the correct muscle groups for me (V-Up / Hip flexors, core and glutes) everything fell into place. My legs aren't sinking when I swim in glide on my back (rocketship) or in backstroke anymore. There are still things I need to work on for sure but I'm feeling like I've broken through a barrier finally! Thanks.

Very interesting. I will surely try it. I am a natural sinker. I can stay afloat enough to keep my head at the surface like most people can . I try to stay horizontal on top of the water as it is the position of least resistance when moving forward. I guess one step at the time. I like the idea of a V position to start with and than slowly changing it to an horizontal position. Thank you for your recommendations. I like water and feel comfortable in it, this is a very good start I guess.

IMHO, it should be said that the desire for one's feet to be at the surface is a misplaced one in almost all instances. A good float does not require a person to be horizontal. A diagonal or vertical float while on the front or back is perfectly okay. Anyone who thinks that their float is "wrong" or missing something if it's not horizontal does not understand floating. The position your body naturally takes when you do nothing is your correct float. If your feet are on the bottom in shallow water, that's fine. If you end up lying on the bottom, then right, you're not floating. But trying to get your feet to be at the surface won't help.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 2 года назад
Whatever you are saying would be correct if floating were the end of learning how to swim. When people learn floating your way, they later struggle while learning actual swimming skills since feet below the surface create drag. When feet are below the surface, core muscles are relaxed, a person has little control of their body and their balance in the water is limited... I prefer not wasting neither my time, nor the time of my clients, my friend.
@MelonDashMiracleSwimming
@MelonDashMiracleSwimming 2 года назад
@@easyflowing I like your confidence! However, we have different definitions of "learning to swim." Yours is learning freestyle. Mine is learning to be comfortable and safe in deep water. My career has taught me that people want to overcome their fear and be safe in the deep first. Then, once they can swim, they want to know how to swim efficiently: with strokes. Your espousing tension and work just to learn a float is what keeps people from becoming comfortable. It is not true that learning freestyle will take away their fear or make them comfortable. It's the other way around: learning to be comfortable in the water, including the deep end, enables them to learn strokes that are viable in any depth. The water holds them up with no effort on their own. Every person needs to know that. I suspect that many people who are afraid in water are paying attention to your recommendations here and it is leading them down an unfortunate road...the one of Thinking And Trying rather than feeling and being. A float should be listless and effortless. If they start with that, they'll breathe a sigh of relief that floating can be so easy. When it's time for posture and position for learning a stroke, then it will be added at the right moment. And it will be easy, effortless, and fun.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 2 года назад
1.It's interesting that you come to my channel and give me lectures based on one video that was a response to a request from my subscriber who asked me to teach them how to keep feet at the surface. 2. If you watched my other videos, you would see that making sure that getting rid of the fear of water, being comfortable and safe in deep water are my number one priorities, and that I actually don't even have full Freestyle tutorials on my channel. 3. Try telling people with low buoyancy about just resting in the water... Whatever you described at the end of your comment simply tells me that you and I are on different levels of knowledge, experience and education, and that we have very different goals and different styles of teaching so, there's no reason for me to even argue with you... Just out of curiosity, how many lessons exactly does it take you to get an adult with a fear of water to be comfortable in deep open water? ... Ellen?

@@easyflowing Perhaps you deleted something. Not sure. Yes, it's true, learning to swim begins on land. Very few people know that. And comfort comes first- before posture-so my 39 years of teaching solely adults who are afraid in water have taught me. Posture doesn't take away fear. Please understand, I'm not fighting with you.

Hello Beautiful Sister! I am going to pool to learn how to swim! I am very confident and I believe in myself! I can do this! So can everyone else! One question, as long as I have air in my lungs, I will always be able to float naturally? I am going to learn freestyle! Please answer my question! Also, I posted an inspiring message! Please find it, and always stay positive!

Enjoy your swimming practice! Regarding air in your lungs, it's a manifold answer. 1. Air in your lungs will help you to stay afloat if you have high buoyancy. 2. It is impossible to keep Air in your lungs constantly because you do have to exhale every so often. Please stay in shallow water while learning swimming and it's preferable if you practice with a lifeguard or other people nearby. If you are a complete novice, I suggest starting with breathing and strength exercises in water, not with actual swimming. Exercises In this playlist will be utmost useful: Strength Exercises In Water For Balance And Swimming: ru-vid.com/group/PLlni5Zb5tjJmib-12WS1zD7KncCryC3pp Breathing For Beginner Swimmers: ru-vid.com/group/PLlni5Zb5tjJnryxxTNOUw0nUQvLa391F2

@@easyflowing you are the best. And one thing more, pool has got chlorinated water. Any advice for using ear plugs, nose clip etc. Also chlorinated water is not good for hair. So ur opinion on these. Is it ok if water gets into ear nose or mouth once in a while. Thanks and regards
@easyflowing
@easyflowing Год назад
Yes, chlorine isn't the best for the hair or the skin. You can definitely use protective hair lotions specially for chlorine, and skin lotions before and/or after the pool. Wearing a swim cap will also protect your hair. As for the nose clips, it would be preferable if you learned how to breathe correctly in the water. You don't need to go to Gym in order to float...exercises to strengthen your body just to float?!...what else a special Diet?...my cousin's last day of her $200 swimming class was 2 days ago and she swers she learned nothing...people who are teaching swimming these days are not qualified to do so...they either make the work double the amount or start with very difficult complicated techniques eg Front Crawl and side breathing...I'm good swimmer and still sometimes find it difficult to side breathe and I have alternatives that I taught myself so imagine a beginner trying to do that...of course my cousin didn't learn anything..and I bet she's not alone.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 11 месяцев назад
I agree with you on starting with simple skills for learning swimming. However, yes, the body does need to be strong for floating because some muscle need to contract and other ones need to relax. There also should be a good body awareness...
@tomatomb8704
@tomatomb8704 2 года назад
Not sure about this, keeping feet up on both front and back is not important. Unless your some sort of alien, you don't breathe through your feet so if they sink then I couldn't care less lol. Legs up are important for swimming/travelling though the water, not floating.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 2 года назад
It's a good point. It all depends on the end goal for learning how to float. My clients usually hire me to teach them how to swim, that is why I am teaching the proper body position and muscle work for floating that will lead to a streamline position and to swimming with ease. Floating is never the end goal. Also, when core muscles aren't engaged, there's no proper control of the body, which means that extra energy is exerted for such a menial skill as floating. When skills are learned incorrectly, it bites in the process because people either progress too slowly and get discouraged or they get injured. So, yes, one can choose to learn floating with feet under water... just... why? I appreciate your role as the devil's advocate, thanks, man!

I teach with half a wetsuit because the pools so cold lol. I've had a fair amount of interest and taught several new one to one's. I probably teach around about 150-200 students a week but that's mainly employed/self employed. Most of my 121's are adults, but you can see me rant anout floating and Buttefly on my unpopular channel lol.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 2 года назад
Oh yes, that's why a wetsuit is a must- cold water!!! Even the students should wear one because they need to be comfortable in order to be able to relax in order to learn!
@sober-cv3iw
@sober-cv3iw 3 года назад
And what's the point? After all, a person lies on the water for the sake of relaxing the muscles, and not for the sake of tension.
@easyflowing
@easyflowing 3 года назад
In order to be able to 'relax' while floating, core muscles must be contracted, otherwise, it's impossible to float flat on the surface. Plus, there are many other reasons for floating besides relaxation such as safety, desire to learn swimming, etc. Also, if one wants to release tension, it's enough to just submerge the body up to the neck upright because water itself relaxes muscles.
