I can't thank you enough for making this video. My betta is displaying the exact same symptoms. Unilateral Popeye, it came on incredibly fast. I took all the hardscape out of the tank and did a 50% water change. I'm going to go pick up some meds you used right now. I am relieved at your success and hoping for the same.
Thank you so much for this, it came at a perfect time for my current situation! My Betta, Alpha, started acting weird yesterday and then all of the sudden, he developed white spots on his eyes. So I did some research and did a self-diagnosis. I just ordered him some medication so fingers crossed! Glad Bandit is feeling better!
I just noticed one of my betas has Popeye last night. I think I stressed him out a couple weeks ago when I put him in a different tank to see if he could be in a community with a half dozen guppies. Anyway I think God I had the medication that you used I treat him straight away thanks to your video, thankfully I remembered it because I saw when it came out
My first betta died of pop eye. I was about 9-10 years old and i didn´t know what to do. Good to know how to treat it just in case :) thanks for the vid
One of my celophane bettas( he is no more anymore:( ) had Popeye and I only treated him with malachite green and aquarium salt and I don’t know if these medicines was for the treatment of such kind of problem but I was shocked to see that he was cured within a week:) I hope bandit gets well soon❤️
I used Furan-2 and E.M erythromycin for pop eye with my betta. I did 100% water changes in QT with IAL extract, and 10 minute Epsom salt baths. I saw improvement within a day, and more so as the week progressed. Also, after a week of treatment I removed the medications and only added IAL extract, and replaced Epsom salt for aquarium salt. I feel like the salt would create an extra protective layer to seal it off and avoid the bacteria from coming back- just my theory though.
Seriously I cannot think you enough for this video. My case with my betta has been very similar, but now he is doing SO much better and fully recovered his eye
@@Lifewithpets72 What constitutes early treatment? I came home last week to find that my betta had a red, enlarged eye and today have ordered the product you advertised in your video. It should arrive this weekend. Do you think that is early enough? I am very worried because he is my favorite betta and I love him very much.
This is why it is so important to have these medications on hand! When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was photo shopped! So happy he's back to normal.
Thanks for the info because my betta has Popeye in both eyes. He is still active and eating but I can tell both eyes are protruding. Aside from that, BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL tank setup!!!
My poor betta, Finn, his eyes are red! I’m so nervous. Then in my larger tank all of my fish have red spots, looks like blood, on their gils. The ammonia level is fine and I’m so nervous all my fish friends are going to die! I’m going to do some treatments and hope for the best!!
Hello Sheila what a really great looking aquarium video you made very sad to hear that your betta is ill! Is it hard or easy to treat? I hopes He gets well soon! I hopes you had a great weekend and I will looking foward to see more from you take care from me Mikael
Thank you for your vigilance and the sharing of the experiences you have. I frequent your channel to learn or get opinions on some things (as I am a newbie to all of this). Very much appreciated! Best to the lil fella:)
Mine are on day three with no change from the Kanaplex except that they are active and eating but the eyes are just as popped. Four of mine have popeye. I guess I should change to the erthrymycin.
@lifewithpets Love how you treated bandit. My tank has a filter to strong, could you please tell me what I need to buy to set up a sponge filter from the store.
We sell the bundle for everything you need. You can then just choose the sponge filter suitable for your size of tank. www.lifewithpetsgci.com/store/p28/Tetra_Whisper_Air_Pump_Bundle.html
I have two 10 gallon tanks with 4 bettas, separated with your dividers. I bought a new snow white betta last week (Used to have 3) and as of yesterday, he and my other little guy (2 years old) now have popeye! They reside in the same tank. They both developed it so quick, it went hardly noticed until I took a second glance. I also noticed the white betta's fins are starting to turn a little grey. Water parameters are 100% fine. I treat the water with prime and add a bit of aquarium salt every water change. I did however put a new ornament in a few days ago. I only submerged it in water for a couple of hours and then waited for it to dry. I did not add any bleach. I ordered some Furan-2 as recommended from a friend. I've never used any epsom salts or erythromycin. This is my first time dealing with a sick betta under these circumstances. I'm starting their treatment tomorrow.. UPDATE: I treated them with Furan-2 for 4 days. My betta's popeye is gone. :)
So you can do the Erythromycin with plants in there? I was told you have to take the plants out? So I have tried 2 rounds of KanaPlex for my betta who has popeye in one eye. I have tried epsom salt baths, I tried Melafix and aquarium salt but nothing has helped. He is still eating and swimming but his fins are now kind of bleached looking but not really clamped. This has been going on over a month. I do have Erythromycin but I am scared to used it. Did this cure your fish? Did it hurt your plants or your cycle? And how do you know if the popeye is an injury or a bacterial infection? I have been trying so hard to figure out how to help my little guy and so far nothing is helping and I am just confused. Please help?
I have a blue betta fish with red fins just like your Theo! My little guy jumped out of his tank last week and lay on the floor for some unknown amount of time but not more than a half hour. The pH in the tank turned out to be too high (testing showed the pH of water straight from the tap was abnormally high, so something must have gone amiss with the county water supply...), so I made that adjustment and the water quality has been good since. But a few days after his land expedition my little fishie developed a modest case of popeye. Not bulging nearly as badly as yours, but definitely noticeable. Not sure if it is physical damage from the fall and flopping around, or if from some bacteria he may have picked up from the floor. Or possibly a bit of both. After noticing it, I did a full water change in his tank and have been adding Imagitarium Bacterial Infection Remedy every other day. His eyes are slightly better, but not as much as I had hoped for. Fortunately he can still swim around and eat and gives all indications of being able to see just fine, but I am still worried about long-term consequences if this doesn't get better quickly. He does spend more time than normal resting, but his appetite is actually much better than normal. I've long been worried he doesn't eat enough (funny for a betta fish - they are notorious for over-eating! I also have an orange betta fish who is of the sort who does not know when to stop eating and would happily stuff himself to death if given the chance), but the past few days he has been absolutely voracious, which I take as a good sign. But after today's third and final dose of that bacterial remedy, if things are not showing any further signs of improvement after another two or three days I'll need to figure out something more effective.
This video was very helpful!! I have a divided tank as well and one of my bettas of developed popeye he has a white bubble on his eye and im very worried i will be beggining his treatment❤️ will the treatment affect my mystery snail on the other side with my other betta???
Poor guy. I'm battling some strange disease in my community tank that came with the balloon mollies I added several weeks ago and I'm treating with seachem paraguard. The main symptom they have is flashing, but no other outside obvious signs of any disease. Fish diseases in community tanks are unfortunate 😟
Sheila, I'm so glad you posted this video! I was in Corey's live stream the other night and saw you moderating. I was asking for advice on just this topic. My dumbo halfmoon lives solo in a 78 degree heated, heavily planted, 10 gallon with 35% water changes weekly. He also has popeye with that little pimple on just 1 eye. I put him in quarantine in 10 gallons and did a 4 day treatment with erythromycin followed by a 10 minute epsom salt bath. His eye bulged even more and it kind of had me guessing my treatment since he's my first and only fish (for now). I researched like crazy which led me to the treatments I did. Do you have any advice on what I should try next? Another round erythromycin?? Thanks in advance for your time! I'm a worried fish mama!
Bandit got much worse before he got better. I would definitely do two rounds back to back. I then did a lot of extra water changes. I didn’t use any salt.
Thank you so much for your reply Sheila! It means more to me than you know :) I will give my little guy another treatment...fingers crossed it works for him this time!
Hello, Im from Mexico City. Unfortunately my betta is sick. He presented exopthalmia on one of his eye in the past days. So, i have a question about the treatment with kanaplex. What is the dose to you used in your video? And when do you repeat the dose? Thankyou so much.
My baby fish is going through this. I just tried feeding him and he kept missing where the food was :( I’m worried about him. I noticed his eye really swollen
Hi, My betta just deveolpment popeye last night. I am treating with ethromyocin as I read melafix was too toxic to their lungs. How long did you do the treatment for? I see on day 12 he looks fantastic, but did you treat for all 12 days prior?
So you change the water PRIOR to treatment with KanaPlex? And I also want to keep my guys together since the isolation seems to stress him out :( Thanks for the video. I am hoping this fixes our fish's bilateral popeye also.
mine came on very fast.. i have my betta in a comunity tank. i have started treating with esha 2000 and been advised to use epsom salt bath for 20 mins every day.... what do you think? its as bad as your fish had it. exactly the same. my water in tank is cleaned once per week. x
Thanks so much for sharing your pop eye success! have been treating my boy for pop eye for a while now. I’ve tried several products in Australia but while the pop eye hasn’t got any worse, it hasn’t got any gotten better. He is showing not other sign of sickness except the swelling behind the eye. I gave up for a couple of weeks just focusing on keeping the water clean until I found a website that I can get products from the US shipped to me including kanaplex.
Hi we have a large tank off gold fish with 1 suffering with Popeye, his eye is swollen and popping out cleaned the filters with clean water and added melafix just did not make a difference cleaned tank think it's blind in that eye but it's swimming around and eating don't know what else to do
Please, how large is this tank that you have divided? What size sponge in each? Thank you great video. I’m trying to figure out if my fish has a case of popeye
If you haven't done it before, I would love to see a video about a betta first aide kit with an explanation on what the different medications and treatments do. That is something I would like to get better at. I work at a petshop but I'm not the fish specialist. I do have and love my bettas. A couple of weeks ago woman brought back a betta she had had less than a month, he was super skinny, had torn fins, what looked like maybe ammonia burns (?), and was completely washed out. I couldn't even tell he was supposed to be a mustard gas looking betta just looking at him. He was gonna be put to sleep, so I took him home to see if I could save him and what I can learn from it. He is now getting color back, scales healing, developing an appetite again, and slowly getting confidence and strength to swim about the tank. But I realize I would be hard pressed if something went wrong tomorrow. I don't feel like I'm knowledgeable enough, or properly equipped to deal with sick betta as well as I would like. I lost one to dropsy a few months ago. I wish I had known what to look for or be aware of before he had pineconed. And not much later one of my fish that seemed perfectly healthy suddenly spazzed, started swimming erratically, and died a few hours later. I don't know what went wrong but I started cleaning fish equipment with salt and the one bacterial medicine I have. Everyone seems ok now, but I want to be better at treating sick fish.
My Betta Ripely wasn’t eating his pellets, I didn’t realise what a I did was wrong, so I couldn’t find the net. I used my hand and then scooped him in a cup with some pellets in. (There was obviously water in the cup). He only ate Mealworm flesh that night- When I woke up this morning, I realised his eye was popped out more than the other. I am not to sure what I should do. he is now starting to lie down on the bottom of his tank. I am very worried about him 🙏🏻 ❤️
My betta fell out of his tank about equivalent to the Empire State Building if I was his size.. I used a credit card to gently slide under her and put her back in the tank. This morning I noticed he had a pop-eye. I don’t want to stress her out anymore. He is eating the worms and betta bites. The other fish are leaving him alone too ( white cloud minnows and black tetras). Do I need to use the medication or do think it will heal itself as it was mostly caused by stress and maybe the fall but not some bacteria? I does not have as much swelling as your little guy maybe about 1/4 the swelling..
Awesome vid 🤩🐟 thanks! very informative. I'm trying so hard to learn in detail to take great loving care of my baby betta 💙 male named Lucky. So much trial & error
My boyfriend’s Betta(Cosmo) has both (HITH) and Popeye :// ! I decided to clean the whole tank and drop in all of the chemical and waited 30 minutes before putting the little guy in. Yesterday I started the all-in-one lifeguard treatment tablets hoping it will work. Should I continue with the all in one?
My fish has popeye in BOTH eyes, not just one. While the eye is swelled, is the fish blind in it? I treated the tank today and the fish came up top to try to eat, but he acted like he couldn't see or find the food. He kept skimming the top but missed the food. If he is blind now, after treated will he get his sight back? Any ideas, suggestions?
Hi, My betta has Popeye but I don’t know if I should put medicine In my whole community tank but that other fishes seem fine? Or do you think I should just put that betta in a hospital tank?
Has anyone had any success using Melafix for popeye? I've just noticed my Pearlscale has popeye. She is swimming around and eating just fine now but earlier on she was at the bottom of the tank not moving. I've dosed the whole tank with Melafix as I had some to hand but don't know if I'll need to get some Erythromycin too? 😥😥😥
Did your fish's eye go completely back to normal? I have a goldfish who had a pretty bad case of Popeye about two months ago and her eye seems to be chronically slightly swollen compared to the other eye. I am trying to decide if I should treat her with antibiotics again or if that is just her new normal and was just wondering how your fish is doing months later.
The eye did go back to normal. I would treat again if it’s still swollen. Also maybe do a treatment that does internal and external. You could add garlic to the food too, this can help with infections.
@@Lifewithpets72 Thanks for the reply! I have been adding garlic to their food and doing really regular water changes but I think her immune system needs and extra boost from an antibiotic! I just wanted to see how your fish was doing to make sure I wasn't going to be treating unnecessarily!
@@Lifewithpets72 Aw I am so sorry to hear that! It is never easy losing a fish, but it looked like you gave him a great little environment while you had him!
I just took in 3 bettas from a friend. She was not aware of the best ways to house bettas so they were in tiny tanks. One was in a vase. 2 males and 1 female. The males, she got from Walmart when she saw that some heartless person had dumped one of them into the cup of the other. One is bigger than the other therefore got very beaten up. Both have severely torn fins. One is a crowntail. The other, I am not sure. I am really hoping I can get their fins to look beautiful again. As for the female.... she has popeye. So this, I need to treat. Based on your video.... Kanaplex is the best thing to use for it?
'Surprised RU-vid lacks more on Popeye in goldfish? Aren't goldfish an even more common pet than betta fish? Maybe people don't notice it as readily in goldfish. Thanks for the upload; I think you're correct it could be mainly water changes. I've done bi-monthly water changes all winter without cleaning their canister filter. (I've been trying to get outdoor goldfish pond established so goldfish can go out there for the summer.) Meanwhile, things apparently have been declining while they wait; one goldfish's eyes seem to be bulging. So, putting outdoor tank on hold whilst doing daily water changes, starting tomorrow. That outdoor tank took on a life of it's own, since I basically had to pull a permit to dig, which took a week, then every other day it's raining, etc. So, fish are waiting, and I hadn't done a good filter cleaning, so I think I'm gonna stop excavation and do that.
I think Betta fish are just as popular as Goldfish especially in recent years there are huge Betta communities. If the infection isn't severe daily water changes with aquarium salt may work but not always.
I'm glad to see he's recovered. I've never seen popeye that bad before, and I'm amazed he didn't lose the eye. How long did you treat with Kanaplex before deciding it wasn't working, and did you do a water change before adding the erythromycin?
I'm sorry if this is obvious, but is it okay to do a 50% water change if you are using meds to treat popeye? I only have kanaplex and not the other meds you used. It's hard to find certain meds here because I live in Japan. According to med, it says dose every two days up to three times. I'm wondering if I should just wait until I'm supposed to dose again to change water. My betta is very spunky and has shown no signs of loss of appetite.
Thank you so much for the response! It doesn't say about water changes on the box or bottle that I can see, so I think I'll just go ahead and be on the safe side and do daily 50% water changes. Cleaner water can't hurt, is the theory. Thanks for all the advice!
I swear I have more problems with my fish after I do water changes then I do BEFORE. I do not understand this. My beta, whose water I just changed and cleaned her tank developed popeye. JUST this morning; VERY suddenly just like you said and I don't have the ingredients to take care of it on hand. I'll have to get them. In the meantime, I've put another remedy that's supposed to promote healing. I'll have to see how it goes.
Do you explain like how to treat it because my fish has a bigger guy probably from the disease like Popeye but I didn’t know what that was and I got really scared that something might’ve happened so I hope you explain and I found out like yesterday or the day before
I have a question about breeding, I'm wanting to do it over the summer then let them grow and sell them next summer so they are a year old. However I'm having trouble finding "jars" or just tanks for them to stay in. I know you have bred them in the past, so if you have any helpful tips I am all ears. :)
Keeping them that length of time would be a lot of work and very time consuming. You may also find people won’t want to buy a fish that’s already a year old. Also the bettas being jarred for that length of time would not be healthy for them. I would rethink what you’re planning. We used the jars listed in the one gallon jar video. The link to them is in that video. They were expensive but gave the fish a good amount of space. However if we’d had a fully spawn survive we would have needed a lot more of them. I will be looking for cheaper options for our next spawn
One of my many bettas his name is Bubbles he had Popeye and I didn’t know what it was so I left it alone and he is fine but now I will treat it thanks for the vid!
