I'll have to watch this about 5 more times to fully feel like I understand it, but as someone that is REALLY wanting to start climbing and doing tree work, I found this to be the most informative and truly "beginner" of all the videos I've watched. By the way, I own a small landscaping maintenance business, but I work part-time (PRN) as a paramedic/ED tech in a trauma center as well. Go figure. Please keep the beginner videos coming.

Hey TREEfool! Been watching your videos for a while, I like the cut of your jib! You should mention the load multiplication on your TIP for a base anchor(x2), 100% of all SRT accidents happen in base anchors. You're influencing a lot of beginners, would be a shame if someone got hurt. Keep it up bro!

I feel obligated to mention that side loading bieners is dangerous too, using a rated DMM ring is infinitely safer. Not trying to bust balls, there's just a couple pointers. ;) Keep the vids coming!

Thanks for the great video. I'm a said DIYer quite a healthy respect for gravity. I'm converting from using a linesman's belt and climbing spurs to a full climbing harness and rope. I think the rope systems will be much easier on my aging back. Looking forward to watching you other videos. Again, thanks. BTW I think what I like most about your videos is your climbing from a single person point of view which is what I'm doing. Most of the time I won't have a belay person so safety is of the utmost importance.

Thank you +TREEfool for getting me into tree climbing. I absolutely love it! The only part I didn't love was that on my first climb today, a park ranger gave me a warning notice not to climb in the park. Had it been a real ticket it would have been $200. That is ridiculous. So definitely check the local laws to see if it is legal to climb in your park. Or find a tree deep in the woods where no one can see you. I made the mistake of climbing a tree right next to the parking lot at my local park, so I was spotted right away.

Great job and putting a hole at the end of the rope for the small throw line pull though is great. It will help with the pin oaks and all of their tiny branches that snag the throw line. Thanks again.

Great video, going to watch more. Electricians wire basket wire puller is a sleeve mesh that slips onto the end of a rope or wire. We use it in construction to pull cables etc through hollow tubing. Slips on/off different size ropes easily. Might be useful to attach pull cord to rope.

Did you know there exist 3,000lb strength Paracord. Amazon, Walmart and a bunch of other web sites were selling it with the wrong info apparently since it came on the market a few years ago. Even the company 'Paracord Planet' had it's description messed up. So I emailed them, after I got a 100ft just for the heck of it. Stretches, so maybe not good for tree stuff, just something different.
@TREEfool
@TREEfool 5 лет назад
@@James-ke5sx I didnt know that. 3000lbs is a lot for paracord. I am skeptical as this means it is stronger than some amsteel.
@James-ke5sx
@James-ke5sx 5 лет назад
Actually I don't think anyone knew it existed. It only came out recently and there was a mistake between 1,200lb paracord and the 3,000lb one. They were both listed with 1,200lb specs but different prices. Paracord Para-Max 5-16-para-max-cord/ (https:*-/+♤♡//www.paracordplanet.com/paracord/para-max-cord/5-16-para-max-cord/) Now there are more companies making it. 550 paracord ain't gonna hold a armored vehicle dropped out of a cargo plane so maybe this is what they use. You can buy small pieces on Amazon just to check and it might be cheaper than other cord at the same strength. Nice cord. Make the first internet video cause no body did so far

Quicklinks are great for pintching. They are smaller and harder to get cross-loaded than carabiners. Some of them can also take huge loads when cross loaded. You could also try out a delta link which should be impossible to cross load in any configuration.

Use a pear shaped quick link instead of a carabiner for base anchors and canopy anchors. They are cheap ($12 usd I think) and work so much better. I laughed when I had seen the masons line being used for throwline... it took me back. I had figured out the same thing back when I was learning. Such a fragile string though. Steelhead fishing line worked better for me as a cheap alternative but in the end throw line designed for its purpose is worlds better.

Also follow through figure eight tends to cinch down way too tight when used in a canopy anchor, running bowline with yosemite tie off is by far the best and safest option.

Nice! I'm having trouble finding a throw line. All I can find is 3mm nylon rope at my hardware stores, which I have used several times, but I don't like it. Not slick, nor really strong. It has limited my tree choice thus far, I'll just try amazon. I'm weird, I find I'm way more accurate throwing one handed. Thank you for these! Also Earthlings is really good, I've already seen it.

@hoggif
@hoggif 8 лет назад
+Filip Šorli Two prussic loops should do the trick. You stand on your foot prussik to unweight the waist prussic. Then you lower the waist prussic a bit and sit down to it. Now, lower the foot prussik a bit more and stand again and repeat. This works but is very tiring and slow. With hitches that lock that's the best you can do. Lowering with prussics is like climbing, just move them down all the time instead of moving them up. I hope you're using paracord only for foot prussik, not from the waist which is life support. Paracord for life support would be a very bad idea. Even if it can hold you're weight, it cannot hold when you eg. drop on it of jump too much.

For canopy anchors there is no need to use a carabiner, and the one you suggest using is not recommended for that purpose, it's an aluminum screw gate.. use an auto locking steel carabiner with a side load rating OR a maillon quick link OR just use a running bowline backed up with a yosemite, there is no significant wear and tear on rope in that configuration. DO NOT side load an aluminum screw gate, rubbing on the trunk can loosen the screwgate as well.
@GabrielSilva-yv8qy

There will be wear and tear on the rope causing the outer tough sheath to breakdown.

Hi there another great video many thanks. I'm new to tree climbing and I notice most videos show climbing on double rope with blakes hitch. Seems like a lot cheaper also. Why do you prefer single rope like this ? Thanks again :)
@TREEfool
@TREEfool 7 лет назад
Try climbing on a blakes hitch, haha. Go on an arborist forum and you will see that most of the knowledgeable climbers use SRT for climbing and DDRT for traversing. It is great to know how to do both. Climbing with gear (vs a blakes hitch) is WAY faster and more efficient.
@krisdouglas6536
@krisdouglas6536 7 лет назад

If you haven't already, could you do a ultra budget climbing kit video? Like just show the minimum that you need to get up and down safely, but no bells and whistles. I would like to get into tree climbing, but gear seems to be quite expensive. However, in my research I have found that one can save on gear using a swiss seat instead of a harness and knots to ascend instead of using ascenders.
@TREEfool
@TREEfool 8 лет назад
A webbing harness (swiss seat) and a blakes hitch is probably the cheapest climbing system you can get but the climbing would be HORRIBLE. It would make you not want to climb trees. With just a slightly larger investment in gear you will have a setup that works good right from the beginning and can be built upon. I have three videos that I will be making over the next month and the "budget climbing kit" video will be one of them. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hi TREEfool, first off thanks very much for making such great videos, concise!! You’ve inspired me to try this, i’ve got a rock climbing harness, which in your other video you say you sometimes use for tree climbing. I have read about ‘suspension trauma’ however, and realised that hanging in a rock climbing harness with your legs dangling for more than a few minutes could be potentially very dangerous. Do you have any guidance on how you deal with this please? I’m thinking of buying/making a belay seat (bosun’s chair) that would prevent this. Many thanks from the UK👍👍😊
@TREEfool
@TREEfool Год назад
Yes, it is very painful to free hang in a rock harness for too long. Let pain (and tingling sensation in your feet) be your guide. Ways to help the issue: rotate your hips to one side which puts all the pressure on one leg and allows blood flow in the other. Then switch legs. You just want all that lactic acid removed from your legs at regular intervals. You can safely move back and forth for long periods of time, problems arise when you sit for a long time without moving your legs, lactic acid builds up to dangerous levels, then you move and all that shit goes to your heart causing arrythmias (or something like that).
@grandmasterflash213

Short, concise, and clear. Well done! I would love to see a follow up video that touches on the improvements in technique that have been made since this video was originally released. A few of the points of concern that I have are: screwgates V’s triple action autolocking carabiners, safety concerns surrounding the Ropeman, rope on rope friction and better ways to mitigate it (sideloading of a biner is bad form, no matter how you slice it.), and tie-in techniques. Also, if you’re going to teach others how to set a rope, you should feel responsible for teaching those persons how to select a proper TIP, and the principals behind the 2:1 effect created against the TIP in a basal anchor configuration. Also, invest in Dynaglide throwline. You’ll set lines far easier and faster, without the issue of line breakage. Folding cubes are the bees knees for storing your throwline...Stein and Falteimer make nice ones, as do edelrid and Petzl. Stay safe!!

Hi there great vid. I was thinking. I love your idea of putting a hole in the end of your climbing rope to put a loop in. It got me thinking. I saw you attached your throw bag by carabiner to rope to advance your climb and I thought if you kept a carabiner on your throw bag all the time and use it to throw initial throw line with carabiner on too ? Or would that break it ?
@TREEfool
@TREEfool 7 лет назад
I do not use a carabiner to attach my throwbag to my tree-entry throwline because I want the least amount of friction possible when throwing up into the canopy. A carabiner is just one more thing to get stuck (and possible lose if too stuck!)

@javierabelortiz8307 2 года назад
@@TREEfool First I want to thank you for answering, I'm starting thanks to your videos. Discarding the issue of weight, do you see it as safe as a carabiner? since I am practicing on a tree in my house and the weight would not be a problem. I also see that when you gain height, you throw the carabiner and I am afraid that it will be damaged by the blow (excuse my ignorance)
@TREEfool
@TREEfool 2 года назад
@@javierabelortiz8307 i think that some steel screw links can be cheaper and safer than a carabiner if you use the appropriate size and rating. On a steel shackle my fear would be the pin unscrewing. If you can fix that issue I don't see why it wouldn't be as safe (or safer) than an aluminum climbing carabiner assuming it is rated properly.

Can I just use a block and tackle pully usually used for deer cleaning?

ALSO Incredibly important information, with BASAL anchors your terminal re-direct or crotch, or wherever your rope passes through will experience 200% of your body weight. DOUBLE BODY WEIGHT at the anchor on base ties. Extremely important to know this so you don't choose a limb or crotch that is unable to support twice your loaded body weight. Also there are spikes in load while ascending when you are using a rads system and bouncing on a rope, potentially increasing the load at the tie in point beyond 200%.

This is for rec climbing you should Preface the video with that is there's a lot of new tree guys that will see this and think it's OK to do in line of work

Hey thank you! I always assumed tree workers were given on-the-job training and would not waste their free time learning how to work. (I know I don't watch electrician videos on RU-vid, haha). But saying it like this makes me finally understand what all the other commenting arborists were talking about.

So do you pull on the tail of the figure 8 while your going down ?

No, this would be impossible since your body weight is on the rope.

Level 1 trauma center? Mind if I ask if your a doctor or nurse? Just curious because I'm in nursing school
@TREEfool
@TREEfool 7 лет назад
I am a paramedic (not to be confused with an EMT). We work as nurses in the lower acuity pods and we assist with triaging new patients. There are times where I wish I would have gone to nursing school because the employment opportunities are way more diverse but I would never give up those years working on an ambulance. Here in MN new nurses have no chance at getting hired in an ER but it is a worthy long term goal if you seek an exciting and challenging career (and it makes good money!).

Thanks for the reply! With your experience, maybe you could get into an ER out of a good nursing school. I'm hoping to do ER nursing after I finish school at the University of Alabama.

Masonry cord is not good for throw line, if its longer than a few metres it will tangle so badly you’ll have to cut that section out. Also, it snaps much easier than quality throwline if it snags

SRT rope doesnt slide over the branch while weighted. It is static so no worries of sawing into the wood.

There are TONS of variables including rope thickness, daily usage, length of exposure to UV light, cleanliness, types of ascenders used, etc. The manufactures should have a recommended lifespan listed somewhere.

Excellent film recommendation at the end! Find it here -> watchdocumentaries.com/earthlings/ [WARNING: Extreme content] If you aren't in the mood for heart-break then I would recommend first watching " *What The Health* ", aswell as " *Cowspiracy* " for a soft ramp up into the visceral experience. FInd those 2 films here -> watchdocumentaries.com/what-the-health/ and here -> watchdocumentaries.com/cowspiracy-the-sustainability-secret/ Check out Nutritionfacts.org for collated peer reviewed studies, if you want the clinical science. Nice to see where you get your energy from :D Keep it up man.
