This is GOLDEN! I have been trying to pronounce this type of R for about 10 years, went through every resource and video out there, bought books, all for nothing. This is the first time I have pronounced it correctly. I cannot thank you enough! Your video should be the go-to resource to learn this sound, but sadly I can only give it one like.

Actually, the Dutch rolling / trilling 'r' is not the standard anymore. The Dutch in the western part of the Netherlands (and students) pronounce the 'r' as something that's hardly recognisable as an 'r' anymore. Listen to 'kinderen voor Kinderen 6 - Ochtendhumeur' here on you tube. Some Dutch find this regional 'slang' snooty. In Limburg (regional dialect) they also don't use a rolling 'r' but one that sounds German. (The Germans use a trilling 'r' but most of the time the 'r' somehow fades as for example 'mutter' which is comparable with the English 'mother'. The 'r' is actually not pronounced: Mothae'.) Example of the language in Limburg is on 'jippe vertelt - Limburgs dialect'.

Tips from my learning experience : STEP 1: First place your tongue completely touching the 'alveolar ridge' and back of the teeth then try to pronounce the sound "zzz..." With vibration like immitating the buzzing sound of bee. (This step is to make your tongue edge relaxed and feel the vibration which helps to flapping the tongue) STEP 2: After that immediately place only your tip of your tongue with flat tongue then try to flap the tip of the tongue only and make the sound "trrrr" like immitating roaring bike engine which helps to flap your edge of the tongue. STEP 3: If you getting used to flapping the edge of your tongue , then proceed to make ' رَ' sound which is slightly similar when you pronounce the word 'Draw". From there try to perfect the ' رَ'sound. Hope it helps! In shaa Allah :)

I've always had a specifically hard time with the alveolar trill, which is odd because I can already trill anywhere in my mouth but at the alveolar. I am able to rear trill, middle tongue trill and tongue tip trill on the roof of my mouth but as i move the tip of my tongue forward towards the alveolar the sound breaks and becomes an ssssssh sound, any suggestions for what I and probably many others might be doing wrong?
@Arabic101
@Arabic101 3 года назад
There are indeed many types of trills, and even more variations of /r/ than I can count. It is like I always say, a matter of training the tongue muscle. This is where I would start if I were you; also try out the tongue training or the force-a-trill technique.. and most importantly start by applying it on familiar words from your mother tongue. If you feel comfortable making a short vid on how your articulators move when trying it out, then maybe I can tailor a piece of advice for you. And remember this process can take some time till you get the hang of it.

I can make a trilled r-sound with my tongue flat on the bottom of my mouth, and I can move my tongue around and make pretty much any sound that requires the tongue to move, including putting the tip of my tongue against the ridge, which changes the sound, but it's never the tip of my tongue that's vibrating, and people say I'm doing it wrong. Hello your video was brilliant about pronouncing arabic raa but i still can't trill my r whilst my tongue is touching the gums , for some reason I can only trill from my throat and i was wondering if you could help
@Arabic101
@Arabic101 9 месяцев назад
Pronouncing R from the throat will be like the French, Dutch or German /r/ .. that's a completely different sound, and it is one that is not used in Arabic at all. Your tip of the tongue should not actually be pressing, but rather loosely touching the alveolar ridge, so that air can push the tongue and pass through, creating the flapping and this the sound.

السلام عليكم May Allah reward you and increase you in your knowledge. I hope you accept this critique. The Arabic “ر” does not flap with air. Every Tajweed rule tells you what to do, expect one rule called “تكرير” which specifically tells you not to “roll” or “flap” the ر. Also in your ads you have women who are half naked working out. It would be best if you changed these ads. جزاك الله خيرا.

Wa alikom asslam brother/ sister, Please let me know which ad that is so that I can block it. Thanks for your feedback. You cannot pronounce ر without تكرير .. simply because flapping is an inherent, indispensable property of the Arabic ر. Saying you should pronounce ر without flapping is like saying you should pronounce the م without letting your lips touch!! Exaggerating in تكرير however is wrong. If you want to learn more on how to pronounce ر while reciting the Holy Quran, please check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Uc5vkrTYnU.html Asslamo alikom

@@ahlal-quran7127 Dr. Ayman is definitely the master of masters, no question about it. But he is saying exactly what I am saying: في اللام والراء بتكرير جعل وللتفشي الشين ضـاداً استطـل Which translates into: laam and raa are MADE with تكرير which is flapping. Further on the slide he was showing: التكرير هو ارتعاد اللسان بالراء ارتعادا خفيفا ، و ليحذر القارئ من المبالغة في التكرير Which translates: takreer is the flapping of the tongue when pronouncing the raa, and the reciter should be careful not to exaggerate in flapping the tongue. Which is what I said, Alhamdulilah ... Asslamo alikom

I have problems with it, especially when using ر with shadda (doubled ر). Ar rahman - the ر here sounds more like english r or an w. I wish i could flapping it but it just doesnt work....what should i do? Somebody who get it through trainin

Take perro. Where is my tongue for the p? If I say just p, the tip is downward. So, then, after the p, does the tongue tip immediately flip to the the alveolar ridge? For rr, is my tongue tip already at the ridge for the initial very beginning vowel sound of rr? Don't you have to have some "plosive" of air to initiate the tongue vibration? How do I generate the air column needed to vibrate the tongue for rr? There's no plosive. Is it a vowel grunt? Upside down e? How many times does the tongue tip vibrate against the ridge for each rr sound? I remember my old Spanish teacher in HS back in late 50's rolling an rr sound for about 15 seconds, just for a demonstration. My 84 year old brother can make his tongue sound like a tommy gun, dit, dit, dit, dit very fast. So can my ex-wife. I can make dit,dit, dit, but not fast and my tongue has to do it. Not an air column, if you know what I mean. I've been trying on and off for a year or more. Seems to be getting better, but I'm still not sure I'm on the right track.

Assalamu’alaikum Does the tip of your tongue need to be just where your teeth ends and the ridge begins? I tried to do rrrr sound but my tongue ends up going a bit further back so the tip of my tongue is a bit higher than the ridge. Please advise...

Wa alikom asslam, The alveolar ridge area is not exactly where your teeth end .. you need to go a little bit further back with the tip of the tongue and there you should be looking for the sweet spot where your tongue will flap. REMEMEBER: your tongue should NOT be shooting at that spot all tensed up, it must be relaxed and in a flat position for it to start flapping. Keep trying and in shaa Allah you'll get there, and if you have further questions let me know.
