In this video, I show my students how to trim a basic foot on an average plate. The plate in the video is a tiny bit different in wetness from one side to the other, that is why the foot isn't entirely even. (I just wanted to hurry and get the video shot rather than wait another night! I use a Giffin Grip to hold the plate centered- it makes quick and easy work of holding the form upside-down!

This video is for my students in Ceramics I, II, and III (Wheel Throwing) at William Mason High School, in Mason, Ohio as well as anyone in the general public that just wants to learn a bit more about working with clay! If you want more specific information on other methods of throwing, or even just the beginning stages of centering, dropping, or opening, check out some of my other videos!
I am a high school ceramics teacher (and occasionally digital arts too) and I have my own pottery business I do from home on nights and weekends.

Hi Karan, I realize this is an older video, so I hope you see my comment! I have been struggling with trimming plates and this is so helpful! I see that you say the foot is a bit uneven. I could see when you were trimming the foot that it had a bit of a wobble...the foot was taller in some places and shorter in others, in other words. I run into this all the time. I work at it and work at it, and I usually end up going through the plate...so frustrating. Would you suggest that I just leave it a bit uneven? How would you fix that?

I can tell you LOVE your job and you are an outstanding instructor. Your videos are great with lots of helpful details. As a fellow potter I always look for good pottery videos and yours are very good. Thanks for taking the time to make and post them.

Thanks so much, SReeves337! :-) I consider that quite a compliment coming from another potter!! :-) I'm just amazed how these videos have reached a much bigger audience than I had ever imagined! I really made my first videos for my students when I would need to be absent, so they wouldn't fall behind! Little did I imagine other people would want to see them! Ha! :-)

Hi Karan! We may have asked this once before but would it be ok if we link some of your videos onto our website? Really enjoy your demonstrations of the Giffin Grip (and techniques in general).
