In this video I will show you how to trim and layer your own hair at home. With some simple steps you can follow, I demonstrate on my own hair how I do it, If I can do it, so can you.
The process I use to trim and layer my own hair really isn't difficult at all.
I hope this video is helpful.

Used this video and the one for cutting face framing layers. My first time ever cutting my own hair, and I love how it turned out. Much better than the last couple $50, mediocre haircuts I received at the salon!

This is hands down the best layering tutorial I've ever seen. It's clear, concise, and you answered all the questions that I had. Also, you didn't cut crazy, uneven layers like many other RU-vidrs. I was looking to add some simple, classy layers and can't wait to try this out!

I just found you. I hear that jersey?…tawk. You sound like home to me! Kristy, you are an excellent teacher. I’ve been walking out of salons unhappy for my entire life. I have never had that “Magic” feeling leaving a salon, so have resorted to home interventions many times with mostly good results. However i never “got” the freaking ear space!!!! Gahhhhh duuuhhh what an easy but obscure piece of advice! I never understood why i was having such a hard time blending my y front layers with the back!!! Your doing Gods work for us home hair cooks. A million thanks!

Wow, I really like the layered cut. It gave me layers but not much just a bit to give my hair texture which is what I like. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been looking for one like this but I've only seen the exaggerated ones. It looked really beautiful on my medium-length hair. Much love.

@kristymaccone7045 2 года назад
Hi lu Thank you for watching! Well yes it would would work !just keep in mind that curly hair looks shorter when it dries so you might want to leave some length while cutting. You might also want to try it on dry hair and also leave it a bit longer to accommodate your curls.

Out of interest, theoretically speaking, you could take the whole horseshoe top section and comb straight up and cut across and you’d have all perfect layers? Just checking I understand :-)
@kristymaccone7045
@kristymaccone7045 3 года назад
Hi, well yes! I like take small sections and cut them little by little. It’s a good way not to cut to much. And always respecting the area where the ears are. I like to section a bit over the ears.
@zoo9830
@zoo9830 2 года назад
Kristy, please help me. My sides (face framing layers are all uneven and too short so I won’t be cutting those for a while. Until then, my back layers are not blended well with the bottom. A hair stylist stacked my hair and butchered it bad 18 months ago. My shortest layer is just at top of shoulder and I don’t want to cut that yet as I want that longer and then I still have about 2” of “tail” left at the bottom perimeter area that is not blended and is disconnected from my layers. I want to even up my layers in back but I have this disconnect happening. For 18 months I have trimmed the bottom so that upper layers could catch up. I messed up my face framing layers by attempting to cut them. If I did your cut, and sectioned off the perimeter, I will still have disconnection. What do I do? Thank you.
@wendy8561
@wendy8561 Год назад
You can pull all of your hair to the ceiling letting the bottom drop out all around your head I don't know what you're talking about the tell meaning the bottom is longer and the top layers are shorter but it would even it up some pull all your hair in sections all the way to the ceiling and cut look for another video maybe the ponytail method would help I'm not a hair stylist but I do cut my hair as well

How did you learn to cut hair? Do you always cut your own or do you ever go to the salon? What’s your hair care routine?
@kristymaccone7045
@kristymaccone7045 4 года назад
Ashley Hudson I learned how to cut hair in Cosmetology School. So I’ve been doing this for around 17 years. Over time I just started applying and adjusting the techniques I used on my clients to myself. I haven’t been to a salon in about 4 years. My hair care routine is simple but I do like to alternate brands of shampoo and conditioner sometimes. I like the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner Also, the Colleen Rothschild shampoo and masque And the Oribe shampoo and conditioner These three are my favorite brands of hair care

What is the difference between taking all the hair up to the top and cutting as opposed to the effect of taking the hair to the sides please?
@kristymaccone7045
@kristymaccone7045 2 года назад
Hi Denise My Gosh I answered this message long ago and apparently I didn’t hit the send button 🤦🏼‍♀️sorry The difference of lifting all the hair up is that you can cut more length off the layers but if measured carefully it can look beautiful, just make sure you don’t cut the length closest to the nape when you do this. What should happen when you lift all the hair up is the longer layers should fall out. Now if you take the hair towards the sides you may cut more off the longer layers. I do it both ways depending on the look I’m going for. I would say the your safest bet is taking the hair up, but if your hair is very long this may be difficult and you might find it easier to take to the sides if your cutting your own hair.

this pretty sketchy of a technique, frankly. Yes you have a guide but, it gets messy with technique. just section and bring at all together, then you're guaranteed evenness. you could have sectioned a U-shape on the crown and then brought it all up, either in a ponytail or with fingers and simply cut.
