This video was very helpful for me when I rescued a wire haired Parsons Jack Russell Terrier! There aren’t many videos on RU-vid regarding stripping a dog’s coat! I don’t know why everybody is complaining about you not explaining, I can clearly see what you’re doing. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Thanks so much! 😊🐶

Never had my wire haired Jack stripped, it gives him a really cute 'scrappy' look that develops with age... He get's tidied up in the summer to help him keep cool.

You should look into stripping, it has a lot of benefits compared to shaving a wire haired dogs coat. Their original purpose was hunting and ratting, so oftentimes brambles and bushes would do the stripping themselves, naturally. However if your dog is a pet you kind of have to simulate that by stripping by hand or with a tool. Also, no point in trimming the coat to keep your dog cool. The hair is harsh to protect them in tough conditions but it doesn’t keep them warm all that well. That’s the undercoat’s job, which you’ll not be trimming unless you take it shorter than 1cm or so

Excellent job and beautiful dog. I have a Parson that I adopted when he was 8 months in 2014. I've only had him groomed twice by the same groomer and then I quit because they were shaving him horribly .The 2nd time they shaved a bald spot on his thigh. I wish I could find someone in Brooklyn, NY who does this ???? I wouldn't attempt to try it myself. This is real artistry.

We have a broken coat JRT that sheds like crazy. I would LOVE to be able to TRY to do this with her. If I missed it, I'm sorry, but how often is the stripping usually needed? It honestly looks like the hair removal would hurt a little bit but your JRT doesn't seem to mind at all. I am excited to try this.

I wish I could do this with my 2 yr old Parson but he'd never stay still for it. I had to take him to the groomer's 2 weeks ago and it was $55 plus the tip. I think they took off a little too much hair from his hind legs but it should grow back. Your dog is gorgeous and so sweet. Mine is hyper and won't let me near him with scissors.

Hi love your video! My jack Russell terrier is now 5 months old and I would like to do this in future. My questions are 1) how come you still leave a beard? Is it not recommended to pluck the entire face? 2) what stripping tool do you use exactly? 3) what age should my dog be for me to start plucking
@LostRiverMinis
@LostRiverMinis 9 лет назад
You must leave the beard, a Russell Terrier always needs a beard, that's standard :) I use a stripping knife by "Karlie". You can start trimming at the age of 2 months but every dog has a different coat and when they are young you should strip without a knife. I have another video that shows how to trim bare-handed :)

Hi, can you advise on an Irish terrier coat? When we got him his coat was matted with mud so we had to cut all the mats down with just a scissors (which was his whole body). I couldn't really tell what his coat was like before it was cut because of the muck. Now that it's growing back it seems very thin and also very fluffy like an undercoat, not wiry like I thought it would be. Do you think it will repair over time to be wiry and thicker?
@LostRiverMinis
@LostRiverMinis 4 года назад
Hey! Irish Terrier have to be trimmed just like most Terrier breeds and my PRT in the video. If you're able to find a professional groomer that really knows how to strip an Irish Terrier his coat should recover, but it will probably take 1-2 years and a few trimmings to get back to normal. Maybe try to contact an Irish Terrier breeder and ask for advise. Fingers crossed for your dog's coat! :)

@LostRiverMinis
@LostRiverMinis 9 лет назад
If you have a rough coated Russell, please watch my new video to see how to trim him: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3zZjREXfoxg.html You need to trim your dog to avoid skin problems. When the coat gets to thick there's not enough air coming to the skin, which can lead to eczemas and your dog will lose less hair, as well.

Hi, I have a JRT, possible chihuahua mix with a coarse coat. (almost broken coat if you will, i'm not sure. when you take a comb through it and then move the hair around it a little, it looks like it becomes matted) I have been meaning to get her to the groomers but I keep finding that 'cutting' the hairs just damages them further. So I was wondering, since her hair is getting a bit too long if there was just one stripping comb I would need to use or if I would need to go from coarse to a fine comb. Thank you.

Hi, I know this video was posted over a year a go, but you seem to know your stuff so I have some questions. My jack Russell is 2, her mother was short haired but her father was wiry, so she has a mix of short body, long on the legs, neck and back. Could I still do this for her? I've been thinking about buying my own Russell Terrier, that's what brought me here. I love how patient and kind you are. I have a theory about people like you, although I don't know if its true. My theory is that people who treat animals with kindness are better lovers ha ha. I think this because it seems to me that if someone has patience and love for a animal, why wouldn't they make much better lovers than ordinary people? It's just a theory!!! Nice video!! I don't know if I will get a Russell Terrier but they are my favorite breed of dog so far. Do you have any tips what to look for if I do decide to buy a Russell Terrier? Thanks

a couple weeks ago i adopted a JRT mix with Chihuahua (maybe). She is 7+ yrs old and some of her hair is sticking out long. I went to the local Petsmart to look for the knife (after I had RU-vid'd it and found you), but they have never heard of it. I went in to their grooming salon and asked them. They don't use those but showed me a catalog that had them. They also said that my dog is too old to get her started, normally you start them when they're young. what gives? any ideas/comments? thanks

I have a question about my female jack. Right now, I'm having trouble keeping her skin and fur soft and conditioned, and the conditioners I'm buying aren't helping. What usually happens is that she starts biting her skin and itching. What I'm doing now is brushing her with a brush everyday and putting in a itch relief, but I can't find any no-water conditioners. Could u recommend something to do or buy please???😢😍🐶
@LostRiverMinis
@LostRiverMinis 8 лет назад
Sorry to hear this. I normally don't use any hair-care products for my dogs. Maybe it's her food, she could have an gluten intolerance or something. If her coat gets trimmed professionally she shouldn't have any trouble. I'd try different food (have you heard about BARF?) and stop using conditioners :)

Hi, I have a Jack Russell and I highly recommend getting yours neutered. It really is the best thing for them. Mine used to bark at other dogs all the time and he was really good at running away. Neutering your dog will keep him calmer and happier. The surgery is really simple and they recover really quickly. My dog used to hump his favourite toy and pillows all the time and after the surgery he seemed to enjoy playing and other activities more. Plus, no risk of unwanted puppies that could end up in a shelter :)

@LostRiverMinis
@LostRiverMinis 7 лет назад
Jessica Lee no, you don't have to measure it, it doesn't depend on the hair length. You can tell when it's the right time by pulling out some hairs. If it's tight, you gotta wait a bit longer til it gets loose and comes off easily without effort (or pulling your dog along with the hair :p). You get a feel for it over time :)

If you are going to do a demonstration video font just show hair coming out. Actually explain what you are showing and what you are doing. I would have watched more had you explained what you were doing.

Would be super helpful is your How To video had any talking. Like what are you doing? It looks like you're just combing and pulling the fur out. That's all I get from this.

Hey. Yes, you're right. I actually wanted to explain what I was doing but back then I was too shy.. I'll try to record an audio track and add it to the video next year - as soon as I find time for it! :)

you have to pull out the dead hairs so new hair can grow.

Yikes! Poor dog.....who really cares about the fur length? Just embrace white fur balls in your home!
@LostRiverMinis
@LostRiverMinis 9 лет назад
That has nothing to do with the fur at home. You must trim a Russell. It's to avoid skin problems. When the coat gets too thick there's not enough air coming to the skin, which can lead to eczemas and your dog just looks more neat, as well. If you care for your dog you have to take care of his health and that requires trimming.

To cruel for me I don't like to see this, next time own a short haired JRT if you don't like their long coats!
@LostRiverMinis
@LostRiverMinis 7 лет назад
Christine Butler I'm not doing it because I don't like the longer hairs. I'm doing it because it is essential. Broken-/ and rough-coated Russell Terrier need to be trimmed like this. You have to plug out the dead hair so new hair can grow. They are not able to shed it themselves.
@lillyfingers
@lillyfingers 7 лет назад
Admittedly It would be nice to not have to vacuum all the time to be sure! but I have owned JRT's since i was 10 and we have never had any of their hair cut, they shed perfectly fine in summer and grew it for winter. Some of my furry friends liked a brushing, but my boy Grubby hated it so much it would of been torture for him and he would of been trying to bite the comb if i did this to him!
@madsandmanX
@madsandmanX 7 лет назад
Christine Butler It's all about not making this procedure unpleasant for a dog, and this one seems to enjoy this and has absolute trust in it. My broken coated jrt sheds a lot and I can see that trimming her in the summer improves her quality of life while in the winter I leave it on to get more protection from cold. She's shedding naturally of course, 365 days in a year, but there's no chance she sheds all the dead hair on her own. Perhaps the original JRTs trimmed themselves in the bushes while hunting, but that's not that easy when they walk in the park and slack on the couch :)

I use a Hagen double shedding comb on my half-JRT, one side is like a furminator, the other one is a metallic comb (round ended) and works wonders on him, no need to trim at all, and he loves it
@jameykinsey2723

Would you be able to tell where I can get this comb? My JRT is shedding something terrible right now. I would be so appreciative.
