Virtuosity is a great music shop in downtown Boston, and I had some fun going through the things I think about when I try trumpets. They had three excellent trumpets for me to try - any of which I would have been thrilled with as a student. I had so much fun, I ended up buying one of them! I hope this is helpful!
Any questions, message me here or on benwrighttrumpet.com

Nothing more humbling than thinking something sounds fine and being told "Well THAT was obviously out of tune"

I tell parents to invest in lessons; the horn? ...get a good one. But do not be deluded by price and finish...Music = sound. How does it sound?

You have no idea how important and valuable this video is, there are next to none that show this kind of wisdom. I shake my head when I see some websites selling horns ( Austin Custom Trumpets comes immediately to mind ) and playing an improv piece with a million notes without getting an idea on how the horn sounds playing fundamentals. I couldn't agree more also on how the horn responds in the lower register, that is the first thing I check. You sounded great on the Yamaha, it was open and resonant throughout the scale. Did you wind up trying several of that particular model?

I bought that Yamaha YM and have used it in the BSO since then!

My daughter is year 1 essentially in 6th here in the Boston metro area. I'm also a trumpet player and would love to connect if possible!

Just a word to Virtuosity Music Store - you took down all my comments. I didn't say anything nasty to anybody personally, just expressed my opinion on trumpets, trumpet players, and C trumpets in general. Ben is a great player. How long will it take Virtuosity to take down this post? Btw, one of Virtuosity's replies to someone (not to me) was, "Have the day that you deserve." Nasty.

I dont know, everything sounds beautiful, but something about that bach just sings/sizzles all at the same time. I love it, and I'm a yamaha guy too

I've never played a C trumpet but this advice is excellent for testing any horn. The Yamaha YM III is a beautiful instrument, way out of my price range, but I can dream. Thank you.

Awesome video, what mouthpiece are you currently playing?

Glad it is helpful!. I play a Bach 1.5 C with a 25 throat and a backbore drilled by Wayne Tanabi (a very slight version of a 24 backbore). The Rim of my mouthpiece is from a stork 2 C+. So, basically, a Bach 1.5 C

Ben: Which one did you buy? Do you still have it? I think I'm too new for the trumpet to make much difference.

What about Stomvi Titan. There are 3 and 4 valves models. And Stomvi Titan are excellent in terms in intonation.

Why and when to use C vs Bb trumpet?
@anthonykaiser974

C (as well Eb and Pic, or any other non-Bb trumpet mostly) is used by orchestras. Bb is everything else in general.

When comparing horns, instead of playing different things on different instruments, I like to compare each one, note for note, in all ranges, listening for each note to be in tune, accurate, the darkness, the brilliance, the flexiblility. You're just playing all over the place, not comparing anything. Back in college I tried a whole wall of Benges and bachs (around 25 EACH) before I found ONE horn that responded favorably. I'll just stick to my 1952 French Besson Meha (.470) and my Jerome callet SuperBore (.472)

Unrelated but I remember Bob Higgins (DCI Bluecoats Brass Instructor) telling us about how he wanted a refund since one of the Boston Symphony’s performances was so bad 😂

At this level I hardly think of this an insult. If anything it makes Bob Higgins sound like a jackass.
